FAQ PROGRAMMING

I just acquired an aircraft, the ELT must be re-programmed, I have also heard about dongle, I don’t know how to proceed?

  • To determine the best way to have your ELT/Dongle reprogrammed, we invite you to go through our online decision tree

Where can I find a Kannad ELT programming facility?

How do I become a Kannad ELT Programmer?

  • Order a PR600 programming kit (P/N 1201570) from a Kannad Aviation distributor.
  • Register your PR600 tools with form as described in the instructions included in the PR600 package.
  • After activation of your account by Customer Service, you’ll be able to download and install the programming software and the Kannad ELT commissioning training document.
  • For a full mastery of the Kannad ELT programming, you have the option of requesting online training for your team. Don’t hesitate to contact us.

I have got a PR550 programming kit. Can I keep using it to program Kannad ELTs and Dongles?

  • PR550 is not compatible with 64 bits OS. Even if you are using it on an older PC with 32bits OS, we do not provide support for it. We invite you to replace it by a PR600 USB programming kit.

My company is not approved as Kannad Approved Operator, Kannad Approved Battery Replacement Center or Kannad Approved Repair & Warranty center. Can I program Kannad ELT ?

  • Yes, Kannad ELT programming can be performed without formal approval from Kannad. There is no recurrent fee associated with Kannad ELT programming.

FAQ BATTERY REPLACEMENT

Why can’t I obtain a Level 2 CMM free of charge as before?

  • In order to provide improved service quality for Kannad customers, S.E.D. Beacons has decided to restrict distribution of some maintenance documents to S.E.D. Beacons qualified and approved partners. Level 2 CMMs will be provided only to Kannad Approved Operator and Kannad Approved Battery Replacement Centers.

I used to perform battery replacement, following the previous Kannad ELT Maintenance Policy. Why can’t I continue to do it with the level 2 CMM that I downloaded a few years ago?

  • Level 2 CMMs are no longer available for download on our website. The last revision of CMM is mandatory to perform battery replacement or repair.
  • An index of current revisions let you know if your Level 2 CMM can still be used.

Why should I have my ELT battery replaced by a Kannad Approved Battery Replacement Center?

  • As well as opening the ELT, and replacing the battery, the full ELT battery replacement process includes complete testing of the ELT’s performance, ensuring that your ELT will perform as expected until the next scheduled maintenance operation.

What is a Kannad Approved Battery Replacement Center? What is a Kannad Approved Operator?

  • A Kannad Approved Battery Replacement Center (KABRC) has a formal approval delivered by S.E.D. Beacons. KABRCs are regularly audited by S.E.D. Beacons to confirm their capability to fulfill our requirements. This means S.E.D. Beacons can guarantee that your ELT is overhauled by technicians using appropriate test equipment and following current maintenance instructions. A Kannad Approved Operator (KAO) is a fleet owner approved the same way as a KABRC but entitled to perform battery replacement on its own fleet only.

What happens if a fault is found on the ELT by a KABRC or KAO during a battery replacement operation?

  • A KABRC is NOT a repair center. The repair of a Kannad ELT can only be performed by a Kannad Approved Repair & Warranty Center (KARWC).
  • Note : that Kannad Approved Repair & Warranty Centers are approved for battery replacement.

FAQ REPAIR / OTHER

What do you call “repair” ?

  • A repair is any unscheduled maintenance operation carried out as a result of a fault found during self-test, inspection, or battery replacement. The replacement of any mechanical part, other than a battery replacement kit, is a repair. Re-coding an ELT or replacing the ELT battery is not a repair.

What is a Kannad Approved Repair & Warranty Center?

  • A Kannad Approved Repair & Warranty Center (KARWC) has a formal approval delivered by S.E.D. Beacons following product training. Its technicians are regularly trained by S.E.D. Beacons to perform all authorized repairs, including operations on the PCB board. When applicable, a Kannad Approved Repair & Warranty Center will handle the warranty of your Kannad ELT on behalf of S.E.D. Beacons.

My company holds a Kannad Level 3 CMM / My aircraft was delivered with a Kannad Level 3 CMM. Can I perform repairs on my own ELT based on this CMM?

  • No. Some Level 3 CMMs are distributed to aircraft manufacturers for information only. Having a Level 3 CMM is not sufficient to carry out Level 3 maintenance. To be approved by S.E.D. Beacons for Kannad ELT repair requires specific product training provided by S.E.D. Beacons.

How do I become a KAO / KABRC / KARWC?

  • Our aftermarket philosophy is to rationalize our worldwide repartition of Kannad approved maintenance centers, so that we can keep good control of the level of maintenance quality performed by our partner shops while ensuring good service level to operators. Still, we are always open to consider new applications based on the data you will provide.
  • To apply for KAO/KABRC/KARWC please log a Support Ticket for Aviation Product Line on https://safran-navigation-timing.com/support-hub/kannad-elt/ and ask for an application form or send us an email to support.sar@beacons.safrangroup.com.
