Functional description

  • The Oilstop V is a diaphragm-controlled safety device against siphoning.
  • The product is used to prevent heating oil storage tanks from being siphoned off.
  • The Oilstop V is variably adjustable to a protection height of 1 to 4 m and can be set to “entlüften” (bleed) and “abstergent” (shut off) for maintenance work.
  • In the “entlüften” (bleed) setting, the piston is lifted from its seat and the protection function is overridden.
  • This serves to facilitate bleeding of the suction pipe during initial commissioning or after maintenance work.
  • In the “abstergent” (shut off) setting, the valve is closed and cannot be opened with negative pressure.
  • This setting makes it possible to work on the suction pipe.
  • The valve is pressure-balanced, i.e. when pressure builds up in the suction pipe, the valve allows oil to flow back to the tank.

Normal operation

  • The heating oil feed pump creates a negative pressure in the suction pipe.
  • The diaphragm of the anti-siphon device pushes the locking piston out of its seat against the pressure spring so that heating oil can flow to the extraction pump. As long as the necessary negative pressure is applied, the valve remains open.
  • If the heating oil feed pump is switched off, the vacuum in the suction pipe drops. This causes the pressure spring to press the locking piston back into the starting position. As a result, the anti-siphon device is closed and the suction pipe is shut off.

In case of leakage

  • If there is a leak in the suction pipe, sufficient negative pressure cannot build up and the valve remains closed.

  • Chemical influences: Do not store together with aggressive media

NOTICE

  • The suction pipe and the filter can become clogged at low temperatures
  • At low temperatures (frost), paraffins may precipitate from the heating oil.
  • These can clog the suction pipe or the filter.
  • ! Make sure that the temperature of the heating oil does not fall below 0 °C (according to DIN 4755).

NOTICE

  • Malfunctions due to foreign bodies
  • Foreign bodies can impair the function of the Oilstop V.
  • ! Make sure that no foreign bodies (e.g. shavings) get into the valve.
  • ! Protect the valve from coarse dirt (e.g. with a screen or a strainer).
  • The installation position is arbitrary (horizontal, inclined, or vertical, in rising or falling sections).
  • The protection height of the valve must cover the vertical height difference between the installation location of the valve (center) to the lowest point of the suction pipe (see position 5 in Illust. 2 on page 35).
  • Too high a protection leads to a higher suction load on the burner pump. The Oilstop V enables optimal adaptation to the system conditions.

Non-return valves (without pressure relief) can hinder the operation of the diaphragm anti-siphon valve. In case of possible pressure build-up due to temperature increase, especially in case of a separate oil storage room, they should be removed or put out of function. Alternatively, a pressure compensation device can be installed in the pipe to absorb the volume (e.g. item no.: 2107003).

The valve has female threads G 3⁄8 and is suitable for Oventrop compression fittings.

Connection options

  • Oventrop brass compression fittings for 6, 8, 10 or 12 mm pipe, item no.: 212705_ (see Accessories)
  • The threads are designed according to DIN 3858.
  • Screw-in fittings with short thread R 3⁄8 can also be sealed in.
  • Size the suction pipe according to DIN 4755.

Sizing of the suction pipe according to DIN 4755

The DIN 4755 standard recommends a flow velocity of 0.2 to 0.5 m/s for suction pipes. Air may be dissolved in the heating oil. If there is negative pressure in the upper parts of the suction pipe, the air can outgas together with volatile oil components. These air bubbles must be transported evenly to the burner. They can accumulate in pipes that are too large. If a large surge of air then reaches the burner, it can switch to malfunction. For one pipe system, the volume flow of heating oil corresponds to the quantity of burned oil (approx. 1 liter/hour per 10 kW heating output). For two-pipe systems, the output of the burner pump is to be taken into account. The formula for the flow velocity w in m/s:

  • w = 0,3537 * V/D2with
  • V = Volume flow of heating oil in l/h
  • D = Inner diameter of the suction pipe in mm

Pipe diameters smaller than 4 mm are not recommended. The suction pressure should not exceed 0.4 bar.  Mount the product in the suction pipe above the max. liquid level. Observe the flow direction (see Illust. 2 on page 35). The setting scale must be easily accessible.

Commissioning

Install the screw connections free from tension and use suitable open-end spanners. Observe the country-specific and local regulations.

Mounting in the dome shaft of an underground tank

You can also install the valve in the dome shaft of underground tanks or in an inspection chamber of the suction pipe. This may be necessary if parts of the suction pipe in the ground are below the max. fill level in the tank.

NOTICE

  • Malfunction due to ice formation in the diaphragm chamber
  • If the water in the diaphragm chamber turns to ice, the valve could open unintentionally. The protection function would be canceled.
  • Mount the product with the diaphragm cover facing downwards or otherwise to ensure that no water can enter. The opening in the diaphragm cover must not be closed.

Commissioning

  • Follow the instructions of the burner manufacturer.
  • Set the scale to “entlüften” (bleed) by turning the handwheel.
  • Fill the suction pipe via the burner pump or a separate suction pump.
  • Check the connections for tightness. Eliminate leaks.
  • If a pressure test of the suction pipe is carried out, a max. the test pressure of 6 bar must not be exceeded.
  • After filling the suction pipe, set the scale to the required protection height (see position 5 in Illust. 2 on page 35).
  • If necessary, secure the setting against unauthorized adjustment by sealing it (see Accessories).

Operation

  • During operation, the valve does not require any action.
  • The valve can be shut off for work on the suction pipe. To do so, set the scale to “abstergent” (shut off) by turning the handwheel. After having completed the work on the suction pipe, set the scale back to the required protection height.

Troubleshooting

oventrop-2104203-Oilstop-V-Anti-Siphon-Valve-fig-8

Maintenance

Carry out the following recurring maintenance work at appropriate intervals (every 5 years at the latest).

  1. Check all screw connections and the valve for moisture. If necessary, retighten screw connections or replace defective components.
  2. Check the setting of the protection height.
  3. Carry out a functional check.

Functional check

A leak is simulated at the lowest point of the suction pipe. To do this, detach the supply hose from the burner pump and hold the end of the hose at the level of the lowest point of the suction pipe (e.g. lower edge of the filter cup). Only a few drops should spill out. If more heating oil leaks out, see section 9 on page 42. Then reassemble the connection.

Disposal

When the product reaches the end of its service life or has an irreparable defect, it must be dismantled and disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner or the components must be recycled.

NOTICE

  • Risk of environmental pollution!
  • Incorrect disposal may lead to environmental damage.
  • Dispose of packaging material in an environmentally friendly manner.
  • If possible, recycle the components.
  • Dispose of components that cannot be recycled according to the local regulations.
