What is a breast pump flange?
It is a soft cup made of silicone, with a funnel and a cone, the flange is placed on the chest, it will form a vacuum environment, and the breast milk is extracted by massaging and accumulating the flange with a breast pump. Since everyone’s nipple size is different, it is necessary to measure the nipple size to accommodate the tapered mouth of the breast pump. The flange suitable for normal people is 24mm, but in order to make the breast pump work better and reduce the burden on your nipple, it is recommended that you measure and compare the flange size table.
How to use a ruler to measure nipple size?
- Have a ruler ready
- Stimulate your breasts so that your nipples are at their fullest. (or measure in time after feeding)
- Align the nipple with the inner corner of the ruler, note that the measurement does not include the areola, only the raised nipple (insert picture)
- The ruler is close to the outer ring of the nipple, so that the nipple is slightly close to the right angle of the ruler
- Use a mirror or camera to see the diameter of the nipple
- Because the nipple is slightly stretched during the suction process of the breast pump, it is recommended to use the actual measured nipple size + 2-4mm to find the flange size (For example, if you measure 19mm, we recommend trying a 21mm angle)
How to measure nipple size with your phone?
- Download the Ruler APP on your phone Download Ruler 2.0 for iOS or Millimeter for Android phones
- Be sure to set the measurement unit to mm in the APP
- Stimulate your breasts so that your nipples are at their fullest. (or measure in time after feeding)
- Keep the mobile phone perpendicular to the breast and gently touch the breast (as shown in the picture)
- Lower your head to align the nipple edge with the small horizontal line of the size
- Check the size
- Because the breast pump slightly stretches the nipple during suction, it is recommended to use the actual measured nipple size + 2-4mm to find the flange size (For example, if you measure 19mm, we recommend trying a 21mm angle)
