VC-1-DMX Video Lighting Converter

Product Information

The VC-1-DMX is a video lighting converter that allows you to  control DMX lighting equipment through a computer or external MIDI device. It features a USB port for configuring DMX channels, MIDI IN connector for external control, and HDMI IN connector for video input. The unit also includes DMX OUT connectors with both 5-pin and 3-pin options. The VC-1-DMX supports video signals up to a resolution of full HD (1080/60p) and HDCP-protected video input.

Product Usage Instructions

1. Check that all included items are present before use. If any items are missing, contact your dealer.
2. Before using the unit, ensure that its system program is up-to-date by checking the Roland website for available upgrades.
3. Read the leaflet “USING THE UNIT SAFELY” and the Owner’s Manual carefully before use, and keep them for future reference.
4. To configure DMX channels, connect the unit to a computer running DMX configuration software. Download the dedicated software from the Roland website and follow the instructions provided.
5. Connect an audio device to the AUDIO IN/OUT jacks if desired.
6. Connect an HDMI source device to the HDMI IN connector for video input. Use the HDMI THRU connector to output the video signal as-is to a TV monitor or other device.
7. Use the MIDI IN connector to connect an external MIDI device for DMX lighting control.
8. Use the DMX OUT connectors to output DMX signals to your lighting equipment. Choose either the 5-pin or 3-pin connector depending on your equipment.
9. If placing the unit on a table, attach the included rubber feet before use. To affix the unit to a wall or other flat surface, use screws or bands.
10. Use the plug holder to stabilize the AC adaptor and prevent it from accidentally coming loose. To attach the plug holder, remove the screw above the DC IN jack, align the holder as shown in the illustration, and use the same screw to affix it to the unit.

DMX configuration software
You can configure the DMX channels by connecting this unit to a computer that’s running DMX configuration software. For details, refer to “Using VC-1-DMX configuration software” (Web).

Before using the unit, ensure that its system program is at the most recent version. For information on available upgrades for the system program, see the Roland website (https://proav.roland.com/).

Panel Descriptions

Front Panel

1. POWER indicator
   Once you connect the AC adaptor, this unit powers up and the POWER indicator lights up red.

2. USB port
   You can configure the DMX channels by connecting this to a computer on which dedicated software is installed.
   The dedicated software for use with this unit can be downloaded from the Roland website.

3. SETTING switches
   Use a thin pen tip or other such tool to configure the operation settings. For the values, refer to “Configuring the Operation Settings” (p. 4).

4. HDMI IN connector
   Connect an HDMI source device such as a computer or BD player for video input. Video signals up to a resolution of full HD (1080/60p) can be input. HDCP- protected video can also be input.

5. HDMI THRU connector
   Outputs the video signal input from the HDMI IN connector as-is. Connect a device that receives HDMI video here, such as a TV monitor.

Attaching the rubber feet
This unit can be placed on a table or other surface, and you can use screws or bands to affix it to a wall or other flat place for use.
When placing the unit on a table, attach the included rubber feet in the places shown in the illustration before use.

• When turning the unit over, handle the unit carefully; do not drop it.

Rear Panel

1. DC IN jack
   Connect the included AC adaptor here. Use only the AC adaptor that came with this unit.

2. AUDIO IN/OUT jacks
   Connect an audio device.

3. MIDI IN connector
   You can connect a device here that outputs MIDI, to control DMX lighting from that external MIDI device.

4. DMX OUT 5-pin connector/3-pin connector
   These are output connectors for DMX signals.
   Use either the 5-pin or the 3-pin connector, depending on what DMX lighting equipment you are using.

Attaching the plug holder
Use the plug holder to stabilize the adaptor and prevent the plug from accidentally coming loose.
To attach the plug holder, first remove the screw just above the DC IN jack, align the plug holder as shown in the illustration below and then use the screw you just removed to affix the plug holder onto the unit.

Basic Operations

Connection Example

Do not use a USB cable that is designed only for charging a device. Charge- only cables cannot transmit data.

Turning the Power On

• To prevent malfunction and equipment failure, always turn down the volume, and turn off all the units before making any connections.

  1. Mute the audio output of the devices connected to this unit.

  2. Connect the included adaptor to the DC IN jack of this unit, and plug the adaptor into an AC outlet.
     This turns the power on.

  3. Adjust the volume of the external devices.

Turning the Power Off

1. Mute the audio output of the external devices.
2. Disconnect this unit’s adaptor from the power outlet, and turn off the power of this unit.

NOTE
Before turning the unit on/off, always be sure to turn the volume down. Even with the volume turned down, you might hear some sound when switching the unit on/off. However, this is normal and does not indicate a malfunction

Configuring the Operation Settings
Use the SETTING switches (1–8) on the front panel to configure the operation settings of this unit.
The following settings can be modified by switching these eight switches on/off.

Settings

SW 1/2
Sets how fast the outputted DMX signals change.

SW 3/4
Switches the DMX channel map.
The VC-1-DMX has four maps, and you can save different settings to each one.

SW 5
Sets whether to flash (beat flash) the lights in time with the beat of the detected audio.

SW 6
This sets the brightness of the beat flash.

SW 7
This sets the color of the beat flash.

SW 8
Sets what to do when the input sound is silent.

MEMO
You can connect this unit to your computer and use VC-1-DMX configuration software to make even more detailed settings.

USING THE UNIT SAFELY

WARNING
Use only the supplied AC adaptor and the correct voltage
Be sure to use only the AC adaptor supplied with the unit. Also, make sure the line voltage at the installation matches the input voltage specified on the AC adaptor’s body. Other AC adaptors may use a different polarity, or be designed for a different voltage, so their use could result in damage, malfunction, or electric shock.

CAUTION
Keep small items out of the reach of children
To prevent accidental ingestion of the parts listed below, always keep them out of the reach of small children.

CAUTION
Handle the ground terminal carefully
If you remove the screw from the ground terminal, be sure to replace it; don’t leave it lying around where it could accidentally be swallowed by small children. When refastening the screw, make that it is firmly fastened, so it won’t come loose.

Placement

• Depending on the material and temperature of the surface on which you place the unit, its rubber feet may discolor or mar the surface.

Repairs and Data

• Before sending the unit away for repairs, be sure to make a backup of the data stored within it; or you may prefer to write down the needed information. Although we will do our utmost to preserve the data stored in your unit when we carry out repairs, in some cases, such as when the memory section is physically damaged, restoration of the stored content may be impossible. Roland assumes no liability concerning the restoration of any stored content that has been lost.

Additional Precautions

• Any data stored within the unit can be lost as the result of equipment failure, incorrect operation, etc. To protect yourself against the irretrievable loss of data, try to make a habit of creating regular backups of the data you’ve stored in the unit.
