User Guide
This guide describes how to install and use your Smart OMNI-Transmission Accessory. This dedicated sampling accessory is compatible with Thermo Scientific’s Nicolet™ Series Fourier Transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometers. The Smart OMNI-Transmission accessory optimizes the spectrometer’s sample compartment to support a wide variety of sampling cells and cards available from Thermo Fisher Scientific to collect infrared transmission spectra of liquids, solids, and gases.

About the Smart OMNI-Transmission

The Smart OMNI-Transmission is specifically designed to fit into the sample compartment of a Thermo Scientific Nicolet Series spectrometer to support a variety of Thermo Scientific’s infrared transmission cells and infrared cards. The accessory features one step snap-in-place installation and automatically seals the compartment. The sample tray of the Smart OMNI-Transmission can be easily removed for thorough cleaning.Thermo Scientific 269-354300 Smart
OMNI-Transmission - overview

Feature Description
Main cover The accessory’s cover is designed specifically for single step,

snap-in place functionality, allowing for easy installation and removal. A uniform fit ensures a tight seal.
Cell/Card Holder Tray| The Cell/Card Holder Tray orients one way and rests within the Smart OMNI-Transmission accessory cover. The Tray features a slotted “well” to hold the various transmission cells and cards
Plastic Inserts| Once a cell has been installed into the well of the Cell/Card Holder Tray, attach the insert with the black thumbscrew. Three inserts are shipped with the accessory. One is for the EZ-Flow Cell and the other two can be customized for all other cells.
Well Cover| Once a cell has been installed inside the well of the Cell/Card Holder Tray, place this cover over it. When using IR Cards and Polystyrene Cards, place the cover over the well and slide cards into cover’s slot.

Features and benefits

The ergonomic design of the accessory’s cover gives an integrated appearance to the Thermo Scientific spectrometer, ensuring a uniform, tight seal to the main compartment for ultra-fastpurge. This capability drastically reduces the length of time between sample analysis experiments and is extremely advantageous when analyzing numerous samples in succession. The enclosed design of the accessory protects the spectometer’s main compartment from accidental spillage.

Installing the accessory

The Smart OMNI-Transmission accessory fits into the guides on the side walls of the sample compartment. Once the accessory is installed, it automatically connects to the purge system of the spectrometer.
❖ To install the accessory

  1. Check that the spectrometer is turned on.
  2. If the side wall adapters are in place inside the sample compartment of the spectrometer, remove them.
  3. If any cables are installed toward the back of the sample compartment, remove them.
  4. Remove the snap-in baseplate or any other accessories installed inside the sample compartment. The automatic features of the Smart OMNI-Transmission accessory will not operate properly if you leave the snap-in baseplate in the sample compartment.
  5. If the sample compartment cover is attached, remove it.
  6. Insert the accessory. Firmly grasp the handle of the OMNI-Transmission accessory and lower it straight down into the sample compartment and press gently until the  accessory locks in place.

Measuring samples

The Smart OMNI-Transmission accessory allows you to measure samples in a variety of physical states and forms.

Analyzing solids

Choosing an appropriate transmission cell or infrared card depends on the type of sample to be analyzed. Generally, the two types of samples that are analyzed with these cells and cards are powders and films
Analyzing powders
Cells for the infrared analyses of powders are:

  • The Magnetic KBr Pellet Holder (P/N 0016-008)
  • The Pellet Holder (P/N 0016-121)

❖ To analyze a powder sample

  1. Prepare a pellet. Refer to the Pellet Holder User’s Manual for sample preparation and the exact proportions of prepared sample material to the KBr matrix.
  2. Place the pellet into the Pellet Holder and slide unit into the OMNI-Transmission accessory. Slide the Cell in Slot #1. Refer to the “Accessory placement table” for proper orientation.
  3. When purging the accessory, place the OMNI-Transmission accessory Well Cover over the Pellet Holder and allow two minutes for the purge to eliminate carbon dioxide and water vapor inside the sample environment.
  4. Measure the sample.

Analyzing films
Cell Holders for the infrared analyses of films are:

  • The Magnetic Film Holder (P/N 0022-002)
  • The Film Sample Card (P/N 0026-021)

❖ To analyze a film sample

  1. Prepare the film according to the instructions found in the Cell Holder User’s Manual.
  2. Place the film onto the Film Holder and slide the Film Holder into the OMNI-Transmission accessory. Slide the Cell Slot #1. Refer to the “Accessory placement table” for proper orientation.
  3. When purging the accessory, place the OMNI-Transmission accessory Well Cover over the Film Holder and allow two minutes or less for the purge to eliminate carbon dioxide and water vapor inside the sample compartment.
  4. Measure the sample.

Analyzing liquids

A variety of infrared transmission cells are available to carry out routine and qualitative analyses of liquids. Cell choice greatly depends on several factors associated with sample materials; viscosity, concentration, volume, absorbance values, ease-of-use and/or analytical methods. Precise or elongated pathlengths increase infrared sensitivity for more qualitative studies.
Cells ideal for highly accurate quantitative analyses of liquids are:

  • Cavity Cell Holder (P/N FT04-033)
  • Sealed Cell (P/N FT04-035)
  • 10mm Pathlength Demountable Liquid Cell (P/N 0004-###)
  • 25mm Pathlength Demountable Liquid Cell (P/N 0004-###)
  • 50mm Pathlength Demountable Liquid Cell (P/N 0004-###)

Cells ideal for routine analyses of liquids are:

  • Demountable Cell (P/N FT04-036)
  • Bolt Down Holder (P/N FT04-060)
  • EZ-Fill Bolt Down Holder (P/N FT54-019)
  • EZ-Flow Cell (P/N FT64-029)

❖ To analyze a liquid sample using a liquid cell

  1. Prepare the sample and the Cell according to the instructions found in the Cell User’s Manual.
  2. Slide the Cell into the OMNI-Transmission accessory. Refer to the “Accessory placement table” for proper orientation.
  3. When purging the accessory, place the OMNI-Transmission accessory Well Cover and the appropriate plastic insert over the Cell then allow two minutes for the purge to eliminate carbon dioxide and water vapor inside the sample compartment.
  4. Measure the sample.

❖ To analyze a liquid sample using a 3M card

  1. Prepare the sample and the Card according to the instructions found in the Card User’s  Manual.
  2. Place the Well Cover of the OMNI-Transmission accessory over the Well and slide the Card into the Well Cover slot. Refer to the “Accessory placement table” for proper orientation.
  3. Measure the sample.

Analyzing gases

The 50mm Demountable Gas Cell is ideal for analyzing high concentration gases (>1%). The outer aluminum sleeve of the accessory protects the cell which is constructed of Pyrex for chemical resistivity, keeping metal parts from coming in contact with the gases. This cell is easy to use and disassemble for thorough cleaning.
❖ To analyze a gas sample

  1. Prepare the sample and the Cell according to the instructions found in the accessories User’s Manual.
  2.  Slide the Cell into the OMNI-Transmission accessory. Refer to the “Accessory placement table” for proper orientation..
  3. Measure the sample.

Cleaning the accessory

  1. Use a cotton swab or tissue moistened with water or an appropriate solvent to remove any residue in the well or on the tray surface.
  2. If necessary, the Cell/Card Holder Tray can be removed for thorough cleaning and wiped dry with a clean cloth. Remove the tray from the OMNI-Transmission accessory by lifting it straight up. Once the tray is clean and dry, it is ready to be reinstalled.

Note It is important not to have any solvents left on the accessory. Out- gassing may cause unwanted peaks in the spectra.

Removing the accessory

You can remove a Smart Accessory as easily as you installed it. When not in use, your accessory should be stored in a dust-free environment such as a cabinet or box.

❖ To remove the accessory

  1. Gently pull up on the accessory to release it. Continue lifting the accessory straight up until it is completely clear of the sample compartment.
