PPE Required
General Safety Instructions

- Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry
- Do not operate equipment near pedestrians or people
- Do not operate without the appropriate PPE as detailed
- Do not operate equipment under the influence of drugs or alcohol
General Engine Safety
- Refueling – Do not smoke, or introduce an ignition source, always turn the engine off and allow engine to cool first, relieve fuel pressure by loosening cap slowly, wipe clean any fuel spills prior to re-start, If fuel spilled on clothes change clothes, ensure cap is replaced & store fuel vessel away from the work area
- Do not breathe fuel vapour & replace cap securely after fuelling
- Do not operate engine without adequate ventilation
- Beware of hot surfaces on engine & other parts
Risk Assessment
- Assess the immediate work area for any hazards
- Control or eliminate all the risks associated with the hazards
- Hazards to check for that may require risk control-
- Overhead power lines
- Digging (underground services)
- Steel Wire & Pipes
- Traffic & moving machinery
- Stored energy – air, hydraulic, electricity, pressure
- Loose rocks
- Falling objects
- High Voltage
- Foreign objects
Operating Safety Instructions
Read and understand the SOP (Safe Operating Procedure) and Operation Manual for the stump grinder. Perform a site walk around prior to operation looking for any foreign objects like metal, wire, rocks, bricks or other items other than the stump With the machine turned off, conduct a visual inspection on the stump grinder head before each grind to ensure there are no cracks. Check there are no underground services like gas pipes, water, or electricity Never allow children to operate a machine or stand anywhere near machine whilst in operation. Minimum 8m distance from machine When operating keep the lift arms as low as possible. Do not travel or turn with lift arms up. Plan work area prior to operation & ensure there is a minimum 8m exclusion zone where no person can enter Turn on level ground. Go up and down slopes, not across them. Keep the heavy end of the machine uphill. Ensure the operator is wearing PPE including a face shield as objects can be ejected at high velocity Ensure all guards and covers are in place before use. Ensure all machine’s controls and levers are in the NEUTRAL position before starting the machine When the grinding wheel is in motion, do not drive the machine. The grinding wheel must be fully stopped before moving the machine.
Digging Safety
- Always contact local authorities prior to performing any digging to identify underground services.
Sign Off
- I/We, have been issued with and read through the Standard Operating Procedure – Stump Grinder
- I/We also understand that it is essential, that before any works commence with the stump grinder that:
- There is an exclusion zone of a minimum of 8m that no person can enter during the operation of the stump grinder; and
- An assessment of the ground for objects, such as metal wire and underground services like gas pipes and electricity should be conducted before operation; and
- The operator of the stump grinder is wearing all recommended PPE during operation.
