Before we start:

We know that teaching your dog when not to bark can be challenging. Keep these things in mind as you begin training:

Your dog is safe with us

This bark collar uses SoundBurst™ technology, an innovative form of harmless correction. When your dog barks, the sound and vibration of his bark will trigger a sensor, causing the bark collar to emit a harmless burst of sound (approximately 92 dBC at 4 inches) resembling the “spray” of an aerosol can.
This sound has been uniquely engineered to tap into your dog’s instincts, capture his attention, and interrupt unwanted barking.
Not all barking is bad
Your dog barks for a variety of reasons, many of which may be desirable, such as warding off threats or alerting you to unexpected visitors. Reserve the use of the bark collar for situations in which your dog’s bark is excessive or obtrusive – for example, maybe your dog loves to bark outside late at night, or greets your guests a little too loudly. Appropriate and consistent use of the bark collar can substantially reduce and even eliminate this nuisance barking.
Take care to get the right fit
Proper fit is essential to the effectiveness and safety of the bark collar. A bark collar worn too loosely won’t accurately detect your dog’s barks, but a bark collar worn too tightly – or too long – may irritate your dog’s skin. Avoid leaving the bark collar on your dog for more than 12 hours a day, and please read this guide and the customer care guide thoroughly for important safety information about how to fit and use the bark collar.
Important: Do not use the bark collar on dogs younger than 6 months old.
The bark collar may be too large for dogs under 8 pounds.

What you have:

How it works:

This bark collar uses temperament learning to provide optimal bark correction for your dog’s personality and barking habits.
When your dog barks, the bark collar will emit an abrupt sound (approximately 92 dBC at 4 inches) resembling the “spray” of an aerosol can. The initial audible correction will be very short, but with each successive bark, the duration of the correction will increase. There are 10 levels of correction, ranging from less than 1.5 seconds up to a maximum of 4 seconds.
When your dog responds to the audible correction and stops barking, the bark collar will remember the current correction level and will use that as the starting level the next time your dog barks. Once your dog has learned to reduce his barking, the duration of the initial corrections will be shortened.

Charge the bark collar

PetSafe Audible Bark Collar - Charge

Lift the rubber cover protecting the charging port and connect the charger. Plug in and fully charge the bark collar. This can take up to 5 hours.
The LED on the bark collar’s power button will glow green while the bark collar is charging and will turn off when the bark collar is fully charged.
Average battery life is 3 to 6 months, depending on how often your dog barks. Your first battery charge may not last as long, due to greater use during your dog’s training.

Fit the bark collar

With your dog standing comfortably, place the bark collar around your dog’s neck. The PetSafe® logo should be right side up, and the bark sensor on the back of the bark collar should be centered directly under your dog’s chin, touching his skin. This skin contact is necessary for the bark sensor to accurately recognize when your dog is barking; remember, the bark sensor is not delivering correction to your dog, it is merely sensing his bark. If your dog has long hair, it may be necessary to trim – not shave – the hair around the bark sensor to make sure the contact is consistent.
Check the tightness of the bark collar by inserting one finger between the end of the bark sensor and your dog’s neck. The fit should be snug but not constricting. Remember to recheck the fit of the bark collar frequently as your dog becomes comfortable wearing it.

Secure the collar strap

To prevent the collar from loosening over time, loop the excess strap back through the slide buckle as shown above.
If the collar strap is too long after looping it back through the slide buckle, remove the collar from your dog and trim away the excess strap with scissors. Remember to allow some extra length if your dog is young or grows a thick winter coat. To prevent fraying, seal the cut edge of the strap with a lighter.

Turn the bark collar on

Turn the bark collar on by pressing and holding the power button until the bark collar beeps low to high and the LED flashes green. The LED will flash green every 5 seconds while the bark collar is on.

Use the bark collar

PetSafe Audible Bark Collar - Use the bark collar

Stay with your dog the first few times he wears the bark collar. He may initially be startled by the noise of the bark collar and bark more. If this happens, speak to your dog in a calm, reassuring voice until he relaxes.
He’ll soon realize that the noise stops when he is quiet.
You should notice a reduction in your dog’s barking within the first couple of days that he wears the bark collar. At this point, it is important to remember the learning process is still not complete. Dogs will test this new learning experience and may increase their attempts to bark. This usually occurs during the second week a dog wears the bark collar. If this does occur, remain consistent and do not alter your use of the bark collar.
If your dog barks and the bark collar doesn’t seem to be correcting him:
Recheck the fit
The bark sensor uses both sound and vibration to detect your dog’s bark.
This is what prevents the bark collar from correcting your dog for other dogs’ barking or loud noises nearby.
If the bark collar is too loose, the bark sensor will not be able to detect the vibration of your dog’s vocal cords and the bark collar will not issue a correction.
Test the bark collar

If you are sure you have fit the bark collar properly to your dog but it is still not activating, complete the following steps to test the bark collar.
It is best to test the bark collar out of earshot of your dog, to avoid temporarily acclimating him to the audible correction.
Important: Due to the volume of the sound emitted (approximately 92 dBC at 4 inches), always hold the bark collar at arm’s length when testing. The collar is safe when worn by your dog as directed, but like any loud sound, it should not be played right next to your ear.

  1. With the bark collar connected to the charger and to power, press and hold the power button.
  2. Continue to hold the power button while unplugging the bark collar from the charger.
  3. When the LED turns blue, release the power button. After a 2-second delay, you will hear the bark collar sound 10 times, once for each level of correction. This indicates the bark collar is working correctly. When the test is complete, the bark collar will beep high to low and turn itself off.
  4. You can stop the test at any time by pressing the power button.

Remember these important tips when using your bark collar:
Be consistent
Use the bark collar in every situation in which you want your dog to be quiet. If your dog realizes he is not wearing his bark collar, he may resume his bad barking habits and his learning will be delayed.
Attach your leash separately
When using a leash, attach it to a separate, non-metallic collar or harness. Please don’t attach a leash to the bark collar, as this puts too much pressure on the bark sensor.
Maximize battery life
Turn off the bark collar when not in use by pressing and holding the power button until the bark collar beeps high to low and the LED flashes red and then turns off. To avoid overcharging the bark collar and shortening its battery life, only charge the bark collar when the LED flashes red, indicating the battery charge is low.
Here’s to more quiet walks and peaceful mealtimes with your best buddy.
