this product is solely at the discretion of the user. Safety information is
included as a service to the user. All other safety measures taken by the user
should be within and under consideration of applicable regulations. It is
recommended that training on the proper use of this product be provided before
using this product in an actual situation.
Retain this manual for future reference. Include it with the product in the

SECTION 1 – SAFETY INFORMATION
1.2 Warning
The following warnings appear in this manual or on the backboard.
WARNING
Improper use of the backboard can cause injury. Use the backboard only for the
purpose described in this manual.
Untrained operators can cause injury or be injured. Permit only trained
personnel to operate the backboard.
An unattended patient can be injured. Stay with the patient at all times.
An unrestrained patient can fall off the backboard and be further injured. Use
restraints to secure the patient on the backboard.
WARNING
Helpers can cause injury or be injured. Maintain control of the backboard and
direct helpers.
Improper maintenance can cause injury. Maintain the backboard only as
described in this manual.
1.3 Important
Boxes like the one below emphasize important information.
Important
Do not attempt to repair the backboard. Repairs can cause backboard
performance to be unpredictable. Repairs will void the warranty.
SECTION 2 – LEARNING ABOUT THE BACKBOARD
2.1 Backboard Description
The Ferno® Millennia™ Backboard (backboard) is an emergency patient-handling
device designed to provide rigid support while moving a patient with suspected
spinal, hip, pelvic, or lower extremity injuries.
The backboard is for professional use by a minimum of two trained operators
and two helpers.
Ferno offers the backboard in 16” and 18” widths.
The backboard is constructed of ABS plastic. Backboard features include a
tapered foot end, handholds, speed-clip pins, and molded slots for mounting a
head-immobilizer.
The backboard can be used for water rescue and vehicular extrication. It is
maneuverable and light enough for use as a stretcher, and can be used with
basket stretchers.

2.4 Handholds
There are 16 handholds located around the edge of the backboard.
2.5 Head-Immobilizer Mounting Slots
There are 5 mounting slots for attaching a head immobilizer to the backboard.
2.6 Speed-Clip Pins
The 10 X-ray-translucent speed-clip pins are arranged to allow a variety of
strapping configurations, and are offset to allow free use of handholds.
SECTION 3 – OPERATOR SKILLS AND TRAINING
3.1 Skills
q Operators need a working knowledge of emergency patient-handling procedures.
q Operators need the ability to assist the patient.
q Operators need a complete understanding of the procedures described in this
manual.
3.2 Training
q Follow a training program designed by your training officer.
q Read this manual.
q Practice with the backboard before using it in regular service.
q Test each trainee’s understanding of the backboard.
q Keep training records.
WARNING

SECTION 4 – USING THE BACKBOARD
4.1 Before Placing the Backboard in Service
- Require all personnel who will work with the backboard to read this manual.
- Assign appropriate personnel to inspect the backboard and confirm that it has been received in good order (see Inspecting the Backboard, page 8).
4.2 General Guidelines for Use
- Using the backboard requires a minimum of two trained operators and two helpers.
- Operators may need help when working with heavy patients. For information about placement and direction of helpers, see Using Additional Help, page 7.
- Follow standard emergency patienthandling procedures when using the backboard.
- Stay with the patient at all times.
- Always use patient restraints (not supplied).

4.3 Applying the Backboard

Follow local EMS guidelines and procedures for stabilizing patient before placing him/her on backboard.

Apply any appropriate cervical or extrication collars for additional head and neck support.

Follow local EMS procedures for applying backboard.

Secure patient on backboard with restraints (not supplied).

Before moving backboard with patient on it, always check that restraints are properly arranged and restraint buckles are securely fastened.
When using restraints with speed clips, check that speed clips are securely attached to speed-clip pins. -
Use as many helpers as needed to safely lift and carry weight of backboard and patient.
For placement and direction of helpers, see Using Additional Help, this page.
4.4 Using Additional Help
When lifting and carrying heavy patients, operators may need more than two
helpers. Operators should maintain control of the backboard and direct the
helpers.
The chart that follows shows suggested placement for operators and helpers.

If load limit has been exceeded, inspect the backboard.
SECTION 5 – MAINTAINING THE BACKBOARD
5.1 Maintenance Schedule
The backboard requires regular maintenance. Set up and follow a maintenance
schedule.
The following chart represents minimum maintenance.

When using maintenance products, follow the manufacturers’ directions and read
the manufacturers’ material safety data sheets.

WARNING
Improper maintenance can cause injury. Maintain the backboard only as
described in this manual.
5.2 Disinfecting the Backboard
Wipe all surfaces with disinfectant. Follow disinfectant manufacturer’s
directions.
Ferno recommends inspecting the backboard for obvious damage as you disinfect
it.
5.3 Cleaning the Backboard
- Clean all surfaces of the backboard with warm water and a mild detergent. Use a stiff-bristled brush if necessary.
- Rinse backboard with warm water.
- Towel dry or allow to air dry.
5.4 Inspecting the Backboard
Have your service technician check the following:
q Is the backboard free of cracks and crevices?
q If your service uses speed clips, are all ten speed-clip pins solidly in
place and free of cracks or damage?
If inspection shows damage, remove the backboard from service and destroy it
to prevent accidental use of a damaged backboard.
Important
Do not attempt to repair the backboard. Repairs can cause backboard
performance to be unpredictable. Repairs will void the warranty.

SECTION 8 – LIMITED WARRANTY
Limited Warranty Summary
Ferno-Washington, Inc. (Ferno), warrants the products we manufacture to be
free from defects in material and workmanship for one year except as follows:
(A) External finishes (gelcoat, decals, paint, etc.) are warranted for 90
days.
(B) Repairs and services are warranted for 90 days or until the end of the
time period(s) above, whichever comes last.
This limited warranty applies when you use and care for the product properly.
If the product is not used and cared for properly, the warranty is void. The
warranty period begins the day the product is shipped from Ferno or the day
you receive it if you have proof of the delivery date. Shipping charges are
not covered by the limited warranty. We
are not liable for shipping damages or damages sustained through using the
product.
Limited Warranty Obligation
If a product or part is proven to be defective, Ferno will repair or replace
it. At our option, we will refund the product’s purchase price. The purchaser
accepts these terms in lieu of all damages.

the limited warranty, and the limitations of liability and disclaimers, are
