The power supply cord of this device cannot be replaced. The device must be discarded if the power supply cord becomes damaged.
-
Please observe these safety notes and warnings. Retain the safety notes and warnings for later extension or monitoring of the cable installation and give the instructions to the person responsible for the regular visual inspections.
Description
2.1 Construction
This frost protection heating cable consists of a resistance heating element
(heating cable), thermostat and power cable. The metallic jacket provides
additional mechanical strength and the connection to the earthing.
A thermostat, built-in to regulate temperature, is between the thermistor and
heating cable.
2.2 Correct use
The frost protection heating cable must only be used to keep metal cold water
pipes and temperature-resistance plastic up to a diameter of 40 mm free from
frost. The heating cable should be installed flat to the underside of the
pipe.
The regulations and safety instructions set out in these operating
instructions must be complied with. Use of the cable in any other area shall
be deemed incorrect use. The manufacturer accepts no liability for any
resulting physical and/or material damage.

2.4 Function
The heating cable has an automatic thermostat that switches the heating cable
on when it detects a temperature of approx. +3 °C and switches it off again
when it detects a temperature of approx. +13 °C. (Fig. 12)
Installation and commissioning
Prepare the pipe and heating cable:
-
ensure that the area around the pipeline is easily accessible and there are no sharp edges or flammable materials.
Danger!
• Fire hazard! To prevent fires, the heating cable should be kept at least 13 mm away from all flammable materials. -
If the heating cable is to be used to keep a plastic water pipe free from frost, the plastic water pipe must be completely wrappedith an aluminium adhesive tape (Kerl item no.: 222809).
The aluminium adhesive tape improves heat transfer, evenly distributes the heat around the pipe and prevents localized heating, as aluminium is a better heat conductor than plastic. (Fig. 5)
Danger!
• The heating cable must only be used on temperature resistant water pipes approved for hot water.
• Never install the heating cable on a plastic pipe unless it is ensured that the pipe is always filled with water. -
Electrically earth all installation metal parts.
Danger!
• For safety reasons, metal pipes, guttering, protective tubes and sheathing must be earthed before installation. Ensure every metal part is earthed before beginning installation. The entire system must be checked for consistency and any necessary additional earthing connection must be created.
• Do not install the same heating cable simultaneously on different pipes. This could cause the heating cable to overheat and lead to fire or electric shock. -
Allow the heating cable to warm up to room temperature before beginning the installation.
Danger!
• The heating cable must not be installed at outside temperatures of < +5 °C. -
The heating cable’s continuity, resistance and insulation resistance must be checked before beginning installation and also after installation, but always before connecting the power cord.
Important! The resistance value before and after installation must match the value on the product label. A tolerance of + -5 % to +10 % is allowed. The insulation resistance must be more than 10 MOhm. (See: Table 1.) Roll out the heating cable and place it on the ground in the way it will be mounted on the pipe later.
• The heating cable must not be 600 mm shorter or longer than the pipe.
• Do not lay the heating cable twisted.
Preparing the power supply: -
mount the socket in a protected (indoor) area.
Danger!
• The heating cable connection must be at a 230 V socket with protective contact. This must be protected with a B10 A or B16 A MCB. A separate 30 mA RCD circuit breaker should also be provided. A combined RCD/MCB with adequate tripping characteristic may be used. The RCD circuit breaker must only supply the circuits intended for the heating cable. -
Form a drip loop with the power cord after the mains socket in order to avoid condensate entering the socket.
Mount the heating cable and thermostat: -
attach the thermostat at the coldest end of the pipe, place the heating cable on the underside of the pipe and affix the heating cable to the pipe in intervals of max. 200 mm using PVC insulating tape. (Fig. 7). The thermostat and the entire heating cable must be in contact with the pipe and fit tightly. The heating cable may not be wound around the pipe. Only any leftover length may be wound around the pipe at the end area.
Danger!
• Do not use any straps or metal connectors to fix the heating cable in place.
• Always use good quality insulation tape (PVC tape) with a temperature resistance of at least 80 °C for mounting. Other adhesive tapes can be deformed by normal cable operating temperatures, potentially leading to overheating, fire or electric shock.
• If laying the end of the heating cable wrapped around the pipe, the distance between the loops must be at least 50 mm. (Fig. 8)
• The heating cable must not be in contact with itself or a second heating cable at any point. (Fig. 3) -
In order to secure the frost protection in extremely cold weather conditions or to minimize energy consumption, the pipe and the heating cable should be insulated. The pipe / heating cable can be insulated using non-combustible mineral wool or foam insulation (fig. 9). Danger!
• Fire hazard! Only non-flammable pipe insulation must be used. (Fig. 11)
• The insulation must be no thicker than 13 mm. Inordinate insulation of the heating cable leads to overheating.
The insulation mounted on the pipe/heating cable must also be placed over the thermostat in the same thickness. This ensures that the same temperature is maintained in all pipe sections. (Fig. 10) -
The insulation must be protected with an additional water-tight sheath which is laid helically over the insulation to prevent moisture ingress.
Operation
Connect the plug to the socket to start operation. Remove the plug from the socket to end operation.
Maintenance and repairs
The heating cable must be checked before every use. The heating cable and the
connection to the socket must be inspected for signs of damage and the power
supply checked for proper operation. If the heating cable is cut, damaged, has
been immersed in water, shows signs of charring or cracking or is damaged in
any way, it must no longer be used and should be removed. The heating cable
should also be checked for animal bites and invading foreign bodies such as
splinters.
The heating cable contains no serviceable parts.
