Download and Installation of Prerequisites
Download the zip archive to a compatible PC by copying this link into a web browser address bar: https://carolina.labsimulator.net/cbts/btdownload.php. Unzip all files in the archive to your local hard drive, enter the “BT_simulator” folder and run the BT_simulator.exe file:

If your Windows OS lacks required system files then the program will offer to install them. Installation may include DirectX or Visual C++ Redistributables system libraries. In this case you need to install them by following the installation instructions. If you are unsure how to proceed with the installation process, contact your IT specialist for help.

Login Window

After installing required Visual C++ Redistributables, run the BT_simulator.exe file again. The window for logging in to the simulator will load:

Click the “Teacher entry” button to open the Teacher’s Page:

Please note that as a Teacher, you can only log in from the Teacher’s Page. If you want to enter the simulator itself, then first register yourself as a student. Read on for the next steps on how to register students in your class.

Teacher’s Page

In the Teacher’s Page enter your Email and the Password provided to you and press the “Log in” button:

Upon log-in, the “Register a Student”, “Delete selected Student” and “Email List of Registered Students” buttons become available:

Register a Student

To register a Student in your Class, press the “Register a Student” button:

Registration form will open. In the Registration form fill in the Login Name, Student Name and Email fields and press the “Register” button.

The Login Name is unique. If the Login Name you entered is already registered in the simulator, a corresponding warning will open. Try to enter a different Login Name

After successful registration, a window will open informing you on registration of a new Student. An email with registration details will be sent to the registered Student’s email address.

Please note that the maximum number of allowed seats under the Classroom license is 24.

Delete the Student
To delete the registered Student, select a Student to delete and press the “Delete selected Student” button:

Confirmation window will open. Press “Yes” to delete the selected Student.

Getting a List of Registered Students by Email

By pressing the “Email List of Registered Students” button you will receive an email containing the list of the registered Students with their registration data. Please note that this email will be sent to the email address upon which you have purchased a Classroom license.

Setting up Level Access Options

After registration of students, you can assign access to the selected student to each Level of the simulator. To do this, check or uncheck the box next to the Level name in the Set up Level Access Options section:

You can customize access to Levels individually for each student.

View Student Progress

On the Teacher’s Page, you can view the statistics of each student and records of the student’s Prediction, Reason, and Observed Result for each plasmid, and you can allow or deny access for the student to each level.

To view statistics, click on a student’s name in the list of students on the left:

The selected name appears in the center of the window. The next line shows the time of the student’s most recent log-in. The Progress section shows the student’s progress so far. Completed levels are marked with a check mark.

View Student Records
To view student records of Prediction, Reason, and Observed Result, click on the corresponding plasmid in the Exercise section:

Student records for the selected plasmid will be loaded on the right side of the window. Use the scroll bar to view all entries.

Getting a Summary Table by Email

You can email a summary of the progress of students registered in your class. To do so, enter your email address in the field at the bottom of the window and click the “Send Summary Table by Email” button:

A message will be displayed that the email has been sent:

Manage Your Class Through the Web Interface

You can manage students in your class through the web interface found at this link https://carolina.labsimulator.net/cbts/. Using the web interface, you can perform the same actions as on the Teacher Page in the simulator. Here is the web interface login page:

Enter the email and password provided to you and click the Login button. Your page will open where you can view your account details, including the maximum number of students for your account, the number of registered students in your class, and a list of registered students. On the right side is a section where you can register a new student in your Class. To do this, you need to enter the username, email and full name of the student you want to register:

By clicking on a registered student, you can view the selected student’s progress in the simulator, including notes made by the student during the exercise. You can also remove the selected student by clicking on the corresponding red button on the right:

In the Setup Level Access section, you can allow or deny access for the selected student to the corresponding level by checking or unchecking the checkbox for the corresponding level:

List of Possible Errors in the Exercise Level

During the exercise, the student may make mistakes, which will not be reported to him at the end of the exercise. The student will only see a message stating that one or more of the steps in the exercise were performed in error. Here are the possible errors: Step 11. Water bath temperature set incorrectly (should be 42 °C). Step 17. Incorrect incubation time (should be between 24-36 h) or incubation temperature (should be 37°C for pAMP, pBLU, pGREEN or 30°C for pVIB).
