Our Rivet CounterTM brand strives to create the most accurately detailed
model trains imaginable. The real-world counterpart is meticulously researched
to ensure prototype fidelity. Each model features n merous factory applied
parts including railroad, road number, and era-specificTM details whenever
possible.
Thrall Manufacturing Co. introduced a new railcar designed for transporting
carbon black during the 1970s. These covered hopper cars had a 70-ton
capacity, 5750 cubic feet of volume, and measured 51 feet over their ends.
Unlike traditional covered hopper designs, these cars had an enclosed, boxy
design due to a special feature to assist in unloading carbon black. Special
inflatable bags called “granuflators” were located at the inside ends of the
car, and when inflated with pressurized air, they expanded and pushed the
carbon black towards the outlets.
As is typical with cars designed to transport carbon black, the cars featured
tight-sealing 16-inch round roof hatches, sampling spigots on the car sides,
and “butterfly” type outlet gates. There were two versions of the car. The
first version, the “1970s” 5750, represented Thrall 5750 production from
approximately 1977 until 1979. It had ten column-style posts per side, a
unique roofline, and the end roof panels featured a single slope while the
remaining roof panels featured a dual slope and a steep shoulder where it
meets the side plate. The second version, the “1980s” 5750, represented Thrall
5750 production from 1979 to 1989. It had twelve column-style posts per side
and a revised roofline that saw the dual-slope and shoulder roofline continue
from end to end.

model in the original packaging. Be sure to include an explanation of the
