General

You have chosen a CrosbyIP lifting clamp.

CrosbyIP lifting clamps are the most reliable lifting clamps available. But using reliable tools does not automatically mean that practices are reliable. The people who work with clamps play an equally important role in reliable lifting. Ensure that everyone who works with CrosbyIP lifting clamps has been instructed in the proper application of the clamps.

CrosbyIP provides a 10 year warranty for its clamps. To keep CrosbyIP lifting clamps in optimum condition and keep warranty, regular maintenance is important. Preventive maintenance and repair shall be carried by a repairer authorized by CrosbyIP. In order to benefit from this warranty programme and for more details on maintenance procedures, please consult www.thecrosbygroup.com/resources/crosbyip-10-year- guarantee for more information.

It is not permitted to stay in the danger zone of the load.
No changes may be made to CrosbyIP clamps. Never straighten, attempt to bend or heat treat parts.
Clamps suited for stainless steel, must be used only for handling stainless steel, to avoid contact corrosion.

Safety precautions

  • Proper instruction for the personnel is of vital importance. This will contribute to maximum reliability in the working environment.
  • IPTK(W) – IPTKU(D) clamps may be applied per piece, per set or with several clamps simultaneously used as temporary tackle eye or for the lifting of steel beams and profiles.
  • Ensure that each clamp receives its proportionate share of the load. When using two clamps or more, a spreader beam is recommended.
  • When the IPTK(W) – IPTKU(D) clamps are used as temporary tackle eye the clamps may be used only individually.
  • Temperature: the operating temperature is between -40 ºC (-40 ºF) and 100 ºC (212 ºF). For other temperatures contact your CrosbyIP Customer Service Centre.
  • There are restrictions for operation in special atmospheres (e.g. high humidity, explosive, saline, acid, alkaline).
  • Loads: For proper application of the clamp consult the load diagrams 1.
  • Ensure that all attachments between lifting eye and crane are properly fitted, secured and coupled.
  • IPTKU(D): 100% W.L.L. at 45° cross loading can be achieved provided that special demands regarding flange thickness and fixation are met. Please contact your CrosbyIP Customer Service Centre for more information.
  • Remark: when handling the load, one should ensure that the load and or clamp does not encounter obstacles which could release the load on the clamps prematurely.
  • A clamp is a device that must be clean when used. Dirt has an adverse effect on the operation and also on the reliability of the clamp. When cleaning the clamp care should be taken to ensuring that moving parts are lubricated and the gripping surfaces are clean. Regular cleaning will enhance the life and reliability of the clamps.

Inspections protocols

Prior to every application of the clamp it is important the clamp operator inspects the clamp for proper functioning. Attention must be paid to the following (see illustration(s) 2 for part reference):

  • Ensure that the plate surface with which the clamp is to come into contact is free of scale, grease, oil, paint, water, ice, moisture, dirt and coatings that might impede the contact of the gripping surface with the plate.
  • Check the frame elements (N) for damage, cracks or deformation (this might indicate overloading).
  • Check the lifting eye (D) and the hinge block (R) (IPTKU(D)), The hinge shaft and nut (Q) (check also the cotter pin (L) which locks the nut), hoisting shaft (I) and nut (check also the roll pin (P) that holds the hinge shaft) for clearly visible wear and/or damage.
  • Check the lever (H) for blocking the spindle (IPTKUD) can be operated smoothly and is locking in two positions.
  • Check the screw spindle (O) for its function by opening and closing the clamp with the hand grip (X). The spindle should be easily rotatable over its full length. The clamp must open and close properly (when the operation of the clamp is stiff or heavy, it should be removed from operation for inspection).
  • Check whether the W.L.L. and the jaw opening stamped on the body corresponds with the load to be lifted. When this is no longer readable, remove the clamp from operation.

IPTK(W) – IPTKU(D) clamps are particularly prone to the following defects:
The thread of the screw spindle of this clamp may become damaged. These defects may result in the clamp not opening and closing properly. This, when the clamp does not close on the beam, can become a source of hazardous situations. It is therefore extremely important to check the spindle on each occasion prior to use. Also equally important is that these defects be avoided. The spindle can in fact only be damaged by careless use of the clamp.

Another form of damage to this clamp is deformation of the body. The plates in the body elements are then generally bent. This may have the effect that the body does not close properly. Deformation of the body is caused by exceeding the load or the load angle of the clamp. You should for this reason check not only the body for defects but also ensure that the lifting conditions are correct. In doubtful cases an authorised repairer should assess the clamp.

How to operate the clamp

The IPTKU(D) lifting clamps are suitable for use as:

  • lifting clamp for steel beams
  • lashing clamp for steel beams
  • temporary tackle eye on steel beams

The IPTK(W) lifting clamps are suitable for use as:

  • lifting clamp for steel beams
  • temporary tackle eye on steel beams

See illustrations 3 – 6 for part reference.

  1. Open the clamp by turning the handgrip (X) counter-clockwise, so that jaws fit comfortably over the profile (3).

  2. Hold the clamp in position over the profile and close the clamp by turning the handgrip (X) clockwise. Ensure that the clamp closes properly and securely (E) (4).

  3. IPTKUD: blocking the spindle: Pull lever (H) and turn left. The spindle can only be locked in the vertical and horizontal position of the handgrip.

  4. The load can now be lifted with it making no difference whether the clamp is used as lifting clamp or as temporary tackle eye.

  5. As soon as the load is at its destination, the clamp must be fully free of load. The lifting eye (D) (chain/cable for IPTKW clamps) must be able to move freely (5).
IPTKUD: de-blocking the spindle: Pull lever (H) and turn right.

  6. The clamp can now be removed. Open the clamp by once more turning the handgrip (X) counter-clockwise and remove the clamp from the profile (6).
