Schneider Electric HMI BSC Network Configurator

Executive summary

The BSC Network Configurator is a Web Interface to remotely configure the network interfaces of an HMI BSC box.
The BSC Network Configurator resolves two pain points encountered by customers:

  • the need to connect keyboard and screen to the box to configure it
  • the complexity of configuring the network interfaces by modifying Linux configuration files

Usage

Prerequisites

  • Hardware: HMI BSC box running on Yocto Linux (example: HMIBSCEA53D1L0T)
  • OS: Yocto Linux SE build V1.00.012 or higher (SV: 3.0 or higher)

Connection
The BSC Network Configurator starts automatically when the box boots up. During installation, the tool preconfigures the Ethernet 1 interface with a static IP Address:

  • IP Address: 192.168.1.159
  • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

To access the tool, plug an Ethernet cable from the Eth1 port of the box to any machine or router configured in the same network subnet.

First Use Prerequisite (important)
If this is the first time the box is being used and the default passwords haven’t been changed yet, the following steps are required before starting using the BSC Network Configurator.

  1. Open a command prompt on your machine and type:

    • ssh root@192.168.1.159
Enter the default root password (see box documentation)
  2. Change the default passwords as requested by the box (root, user and Node-RED accounts). The Node-RED login/password is provided in the box documentation. Let the box reboot at the end of the operation.

First Use
The Web Interface is accessible from any web browser and the following address: https://192.168.1.159:2005 The BSC Network Configurator Web Interface uses a self-signed certificate, therefore the certificate can’t be trusted by the system. The risk must be manually accepted:

The login page should be visible. The default credentials are the following:

  • Login: edgebsc
  • Password: Edge#r2

The tool will request to change the default password after the first connection

Configure the interfaces
Eth1, Eth2, WIFI, 4G and Serial interfaces can be modified with the tool. Once the modification of an interface is done, hit Submit. The changes are not applied until the box restarts (see Administration page).

Administrate the box
In the Administration page, you can:

  • Restore the configuration: this will reload the current configuration of the box and delete the on-going changes
  • Reboot the box: this action is mandatory to apply the changes to the box. Please wait for a few seconds after reboot before reconnecting to the Web Interface The Administration page also displays information about the box firmware.

Change Password, Logout
The top right menu provides a link to change the password of the tool or to logout.

Troubleshoot

When I set up one of the interfaces to use DHCP, I don’t see the DHCP IP Address used by the box

  • Make sure you rebooted the box; the changes are not applied until you reboot the box
  • Make sure that the box is connected to a network providing a DHCP server

When I set up the WIFI SSID and password and submit the change, the IP Address remains empty

  • Make sure you rebooted the box; the changes are not applied until you reboot the box
  • If no IP Address is displayed, it means that the WIFI connection failed, verify that the SSID and the password are correct.
