ROCKLER 55120 9 Inch Quick Draw Marking Gauge
Setup and Calibration
- Loosen the knurled thumbscrew on the pencil carriage and slide the carriage out of the way. Then place the Quick-Draw Marking Gauge on a straight board with the fence tight against the board’s edge. Use the pencil and the rulers on the gauge to make marks at specific points on the metric side and on the inch side. (We made our calibration marks at 30mm and 1″.)
- Make sure that the outer barrel of the pencil carriage is in the down position and insert the pencil in the carriage far enough that the tip extends slightly beyond the bottom of the aluminum ruler track. During use, this will cause the springloaded mechanism to apply pressure to the pencil without your needing to push down on it, so you can mark your workpiece simply by sliding the fence along the edge.
- Push the outer barrel of the pencil carriage up to lock the pencil in place. Fig. 1.
- Place the Quick-Draw Marking Gauge back on your board. Lift the pencil and loosen the knurled thumbscrew on the pencil carriage so you can slide it on the ruler track. Move the carriage until the pencil tip is on the calibration mark you made on the metric side of the ruler track. Precision is important here. Tighten the knurled thumbscrew to secure the carriage in place.
- Keeping the fence tight against the edge of your board, move the Gauge along the workpiece to strike a line.
- Carefully rotate the pencil up and hold it so you can access the transparent indicator. Use a small Phillips-head screwdriver to loosen the screws, and adjust the indicator until its beveled edge is precisely on the measurement you used to make your mark. Fig. 2.
- Repeat Steps 4-6 to set the transparent indicator on the inch side of the pencil carriage. You won’t need to rotate the pencil to make the adjustments to that indicator.
Storage
- Remove the pencil from the pencil carriage by sliding the outer barrel down to release it.
- Loosen the knurled thumbscrew to move the pencil carriage. Slide it so there’s enough room to fit the pencil in the slot in the ruler track. Orient the pencil in the slot so that the tip faces the pencil carriage and slide the carriage until the dimple in the side of the carriage captures the tip. Tighten the knurled thumbscrew to secure.
- Use the hang hole in the end of the gauge for hanging storage on a pegboard or other hook.
