YOUR BREITLING CHRONOMETER

A chronometer is a high-precision instrument that has successfully passed the entire battery of tests imposed by COSC (Swiss Offi cial Chronometer Testing Institute), a neutral and independent body which individually tests each movement according to the prescriptions in force.
The certifi cation test for wristwatches with sprung balance oscillators, according to standard ISO 3159, consists of observing each movement for 15 days and 15 nights, in 5 positions and at 3 diff erent temperatures (8°C, 23°C, 38°C). In order to earn the prestigious chronometer label, a movement’s performances must meet 7 very strict criteria, including a daily variation in rate ranging between only -4/+6 seconds.
The term “chronometer” should not be confused with that of “chronograph”, which is a complicated watch fi tted with an additional mechanism for measurement of the  uration of an event. A chronograph is not necessarily chronometer-certifi ed, but all Breitling chronographs bear the much-coveted title of “chronometer”.

PREPARATION FOR USE

WINDING – TIME-SETTING
NB : mechanical watches endowed with a date indicator window are equipped with a complex mechanism that is set into motion between 8 pm and 3 am. It is therefore vital to avoid adjusting the calendar or moving the time backwards during this period.

  1. Wind the watch through approximately 40 clockwise turns of the crown.
  2. Pull the crown out to position 2, turn it clockwise to adjust the calendar to the day prior to the activation date.
  3. Pull the crown out to position 3. Turn the hands forward until the correct date jumps into place, at midnight. Then adjust the hour and minute.
  4. Push the crown back into position 1.

USING THE CHRONOGRAPH

MEASURING A SINGLE SHORT TIME

  1. Press pushpiece A to start the chronograph.
Hand 3 shows the measurement in seconds.

  2. Stop the measurement by pressing pushpiece A once more. The measurement is made in hours (totalizer 1), minutes (totalizer 2), seconds and¼ of a second (hand 3).

  3. Reset the chronograph to zero by pressing pushpiece B.

MEASURING AN INTERRUPTED SHORT TIME

  1. Press pushpiece A to start the chronograph. Hand 3 shows the measurement in seconds.

  2. To interrupt the measurement, press pushpiece A once more.
To restart the time measurement, press pushpiece A. This procedure makes it possible to add up several short times.

  3. The chronograph is reset to zero by pressing pushpiece B, once the fi nal measurement has been stopped.

SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS

SECOND TIME ZONE
The second, independent hour hand (A) makes a complete sweep of the dial in 24 hours. Its position indicates the 2 nd time zone on the dial rim. The hand can be adjusted by pulling the crown out to position 2, and rotating it counterclockwise.

SUN COMPASS
Your Breitling chronometer may be used as a sun compass, thus enabling you to determine North and South. For regions that have instated daylight saving time, subtract one hour when aligning the watch.
In the Northern Hemisphere
Point the hour hand precisely towards the sun. In relation to the watch dial, the point located midway between the current time and 12 o’clock indicates South, North being exactly opposite. In the Southern Hemisphere
Point the hour-marker located at 12 o’clock on the dial precisely towards the sun. In relation to the watch dial, the point located midway between the current time and 12 o’clock indicates North, South being exactly opposite.

MAINTENANCE

Your Breitling chronometer is a sophisticated instrument which is constantly subjected to a wide variety of stresses and strains. Within a very small volume, a large number of components contribute to handling all the functions. Their mechanical action inevitably leads to a certain amount of wear and tear, which may be controlled by maintenance consisting of renewing the lubrication and replacing worn components. Like any precision measurement instrument, your watch must be regularly maintained in order to function at its highest level of potential: the frequency of this operation varies according to actual use. Breitling or your authorized retailer will be happy to handle the procedure.

WATER RESISTANCE

The movement of your chronometer is protected by a sophisticated case fi tted with waterresistant gaskets. Under the infl uence of certain external factors such as perspiration, chlorinated or salt water, cosmetics, perfumes or dust, these gaskets progressively deteriorate. That is why water resistance cannot be permanently guaranteed, and the gaskets must be periodically replaced, ideally every two years. We recommend having an annual water-resistance check conducted. This operation, which takes only a few minutes, may be conducted by a Breitling authorized maintenance centre, or by an authorized dealer ( www.breitling.com ).
The complex construction of the case used for Navitimer models, featuring a design faithful to the vintage 1950s model, means that they are not suited to aquatic activities. The crown, pushpieces and bezel must under no circumstances be operated when the watch is wet.
The water resistance indication, expressed in bars, must primarily be considered a safety factor, protecting your chronometer from dust and splashing. Only watches that are waterresistant to 5 bars or more should be subjected to repeated immersions.
If your watch is equipped with a screw-lock crown, ensure that this is locked before any use in water. This also applies to screw-lock pushpieces.
USEFUL TIPS
Breitling genuine leather straps are crafted with the most refi ned materials and represent extremely high-quality products. Like all objects in natural hide (shoes, gloves, etc.), their length of life varies considerably, according to the conditions in which they are worn. ln particular, water, cosmetics and perspiration accelerate the ageing process.
Breitling metal cases and bracelets are crafted from the fi nest alloys and ensure sturdiness and wearer comfort. Regular cleaning with a soft damp brush will keep your watch shiny. For watches fi tted with a leather strap, proceed in the same manner, taking care to avoid wetting the strap.
WHAT TO AVOID
Like any valuable objects, Breitling chronometers deserve special care. It is important to protect them from jarring and knocks by hard objects, and not to expose them to
chemical products, solvents, dangerous gases, or magnetic fields. Moreover, your Breitling chronometer is designed to run smoothly at temperatures ranging between 0°C and 50°C.

CAUTION
Mechanical watches with date, day, month, and moon-phase indicators are equipped with a complex mechanism that is set in motion between 8 pm and 3 am. It is vital to avoid adjusting the calendar or moving the hands backwards during this period.
STEP 1
Check whether the crown should be unscrewed (counterclockwise) before you carry out the following steps.
STEP 2
Wind the watch with approximately 40 clockwise turns of the crown.
STEP 3
If the watch does not have a date aperture, follow these steps: pull the crown out to position 3. Set the hour and minute hands. Push the crown back into position 2. Turn
it counterclockwise to adjust the GMT hand (with a red tip) to the time of your choice (second timezone). Its position indicates the time on the 24 h scale. If the watch does have a date aperture, follow these steps: pull the crown out to position 3. Turn it so that the hour and minute hands point to 06:25. Push the crown into position 2. Turn it clockwise to adjust it to the day before the activation date. Pull the crown out to position 3. Move the hands forwards until the correct date is displayed, at midnight. Set the hour and minute hands. Push the crown back into position 2. Turn it counterclockwise to adjust the second independent hour hand that completes a full rotation of the dial in 24 hours to the time of your choice (second timezone). Its position indicates the time on the 24 h scale.
STEP 4
Push the crown back into position 1. If you had to unscrew the crown in step 1, follow this final step: press the crown gently, turning it clockwise, then tighten it again until you feel some resistance. Do not force it!
