Installing the Table on Your Drill Press
The Drill Press Table comes with four mounting brackets that you position to
fit your drill press and attach to the underside with the included screws. The
mounting brackets incorporate J-bolts with capped feet that will be tightened
to secure the Drill Press Table to the drill press’s metal table
-
Remove the MDF sacrificial insert from the center of the Drill Press Table.
-
Position the Drill Press Table on the metal table of your drill press so that it’s centered and won’t bind against the column.
There are three holes in the cavity for the sacrificial insert that can be used to align the center of the Drill Press Table with the center hole in the drill press’s table. Also make sure that the table is positioned so that the right rear cutaway allows access to the drill press’s crank arm for raising and lowering the table. -
Once the Drill Press Table is correctly positioned on the drill press’s table, carefully clamp it in place.
-
One by one, position the mounting brackets so that the capped feet of the J-bolts will make contact with a flat surface on the underside of the drill press’s metal table. Position the brackets along the left and right sides of the drill press’s table so that the Drill Press Table can be removed after mounting, if necessary. For each mounting bracket, use a pencil to mark the hole locations for the screws on the underside of the Drill Press Table.
-
Once hole locations for all four mounting brackets have been marked, unclamp the Drill Press Table and move it to a work surface, flipping it so the underside faces up.
-
At each marked hole location, drill a stopped 7/64″ diameter pilot hole 3/4″ deep. Take care not to drill through the full table thickness.
Do NOT overtighten the mounting screws.
Do NOT use an impact driver to install the mounting screws; the increased torque could cause the screws to strip the pilot holes. -
Attach the mounting brackets to the underside of the Drill Press Table with the included #8 x 3/4″ screws.
-
Make sure that the J-bolts have been retracted enough to accommodate the thickness of the drill press’s metal table and then slide the Drill Press Table back into its centered position on the drill press’s table. Make sure the capped feet of all four J-bolts contact a flat surface on the underside of the drill press’s metal table.
-
Turn the J-bolts on each mounting bracket to secure the Drill Press Table to the drill press’s table. Do NOT overtighten. Check to make sure the Drill Press Table doesn’t shift. Fig. 1.
-
Reinstall the MDF sacrificial center insert.
Assembling and Installing the Fence
- After assembling the fence, install the fence on the Drill Press Table by fitting the T-bolts into the holes at the front end of the fence-adjustment slots in the table.
- Position the fence as desired and secure in place by tightening the knobs.
- Connect a 2 1⁄2″ dust hose or fitting to the fence dust port.
Making a Replacement Center Insert
After a period of use, it might become necessary to replace the MDF
sacrificial center insert. To make one, simply cut a 9″ x 3″ piece of 1/2″
thick MDF. Other material could be used, but it must be completely flat and
measure exactly 1/2″ thick. (Plywood, for example, typically is slightly
thinner than the nominal 1/2″ thickness advertised.) Fig. 2.
