Precautions for use

The strength tests undertaken to obtain UE certification cover only the piton itself and not the solidity of placement in actual use: most of the time, the holding strength of a piton in rock will be less than these values.
The strength of a piton placement depends on the shape of the piton, how it is placed, rock quality, and the experience level of the climber who placed it. The breaking load and the holding strength of the piton diminish over time. Piton strength can be diminished by frequent use.
Working principle: during a fall, the piton must lock into the crack. Force (F), applied to the carabiner, torques the piton blade. This torque locks the piton into place, except with the UNIVERSEL piton.
Non-tempered pitons may be straightened with a hammer, provided that no cracks are created. Tempered steel pitons must not be straightened or heated.
