Instruction Manual
Device description
The handles power the various heads and are powered by various batteries,
including
rechargeable, AA, and C sizes depending on the model. The chargers are
portable units that charge one or two Welch Allyn rechargeable instrument
handles. Some chargers attach to the handle and plug directly into an outlet.
Others are desk or wall chargers that the handle is placed in for charging.
The universal charger is compact and convenient and can be placed on a desk or
wallmounted. An indicator light signals when batteries are charging. Rugged
ABS construction is attractive and durable. Adapters are available for the 2.5
V NiCad handles to allow them to be charged in the universal charger.
Intended use
The handles are intended to power various accessory heads including otoscopes, ophthalmoscopes, retinoscopes, strabismoscopes, episcopes, illuminators, and transilluminators. The chargers are intended to charge Welch Allyn rechargeable 2.5 V and 3.5 V handles.

Warnings
WARNING Continuous Operation: This product complies with current required
standards for electromagnetic interference and should not present problems to
other equipment or be affected by other devices. As a precaution, avoid using
this device in close proximity to other equipment.
WARNING Do not disassemble or modify the battery pack. There are no
serviceable parts inside.
WARNING Do not charge battery pack in any environment where the
temperature may exceed 40°C (104°F) or fall below 0°C (32°F).
WARNING For longest service, remove the handle and AC Charging Module
from outlet when charging is complete. Do not leave AC Charging Module
connected to power outlet without a handle attached.
WARNING Do not sterilize the 710 Series Power Handle
WARNING Do not expose battery pack to storage temperatures above 50°C
(122°F) or below -20°C (-4°F).
WARNING Do not discharge battery pack if the ambient temperature is above
60°C (140°F) or below -20°C (-4°F).

Handles
Nickel-cadmium handles
The 716 is a universal handle which accepts Welch Allyn 3.5v instrument heads.
It is
recharged in the 7114X Series Universal Desk Charger. Specifications

The 710 is a universal handle which accepts all Welch Allyn 3.5v instrument heads. Its adjustable rheostat control allows optimal intensity and battery life. The chrome-plated brass handles and metal head connection provide durable, long life construction and the smooth, non-abrasive knurled finish insures a no-slip grip. The 710 series also have a built in charger for easy, overnight charging of the long-lasting rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries. As an accessory, the converter ring is available in the 71000-C handle, which enables insertion of off-the-shelf C-cell batteries in place of the rechargeable batteries for continued operation without the need to wait for recharging.

Before first use

Operating instructions
- Connect instrument head to the handle.
- Depress On/Off Button on Rheostat Section and rotate the Light Intensity Control Ring clockwise (CW). Continue to rotate until stop is reached to intensify light.
- To turn off, rotate counter clockwise (CCW). Button will click when fully off. Turn fully off after each use to ensure maximum on-time from the battery
Charging instructions for rechargeable handles with self-contained charger
- Remove the instrument head and unscrew top cap from battery housing.
- Plug into standard (110-120v 50/60 Hz) wall outlet. Charge for 16 continuous hours when new, or after a long period of activity.
- For subsequent recharging, charge overnight.
How to replace rechargeable batteries
When a rechargeable battery will no longer accept a charge, replace as follows:

Unscrew bottom cap.

Shake out old battery.
-
Insert replacement battery “button” side up.
CAUTION Insert battery fully until seated. For convertible handles, match polarity markings with those on instrument when inserting replacement battery -
Screw bottom cap back into place. Ensure the plastic insulator cap is securely attached to the bottom cap. If the insulator is missing or broken, contact Hillrom for a new bottom cap.
For models 71000, 71010,71020, 71050, 70700, 70710, 70720, and 70750 (non- convertible, rechargeable handles with self-contained charger), ensure that plastic insulator cap is intact and securely seated on spring. If missing or damaged, install new cap before using
WARNING DO NOT INTERCHANGE BOTTOM CAPS BETWEEN DIFFERENT MODELS OF RECHARGEABLE HANDLES. USE OF INCORRECT BOTTOM CAP MAY DAMAGE THE BATTERY OR CAUSE THE HANDLE TO OVERHEAT. BURNS MAY OCCUR FROM AN OVERHEATED HANDLE

Welch Allyn convertible handles
To interchange rechargeable battery with standard (“C”) batteries:
- Unscrew transformer module assembly.
- Shake out rechargeable battery.
- Insert battery converter: Product No. 710168-501 for #71000-C handle or Product No. 710168-502 for #71020-Chandle (export).
- Unscrew bottom cap and insert two “C”batteries with plus (+) terminal first.
- Replace bottom cap. To interchange standard (“C”) batteries with rechargeable battery, reverse above process.
Convertible Handle
NOTE Slight heating of handles is normal during recharge cycle.
NOTE Batteries cannot overheat or overcharge.
NOTE Batteries will not leak.
NOTE Batteries will discharge gradually over a period of about 60 days
when stored at room temperature (70°F). Storage at higher temperatures
accelerates the discharge rate.
NOTE For rechargeable handles that accommodate “C” or “AA” size batteries
– remove batteries from handle if instrument is not in use for an extended
period of time.
Cleaning and disinfection for handles
Wipe the handle with an appropriate health care low- or intermediate-level cleaner/ disinfecting wipe that incorporates either a 1:10 sodium hypochlorite (bleach) solution or isopropyl alcohol as the active disinfection ingredient. Follow wipe manufacturer’ sinstructions for appropriate use, contact times and applicable warnings and precautions.Do not excessively soak/saturate the Handle assembly. Do not immerse handle assembly in any solution. Do not sterilize the Power Handle. After disinfection, inspect the Handle assembly for visible signs of deterioration at its switch, device end connector, and housing. If evidence of damage or deterioration is present, discontinue use and contact Hillrom Technical Support.

Charger instructions

Plug into a 110-130 V, 50-60 Hz A.C. receptacle for No. 71040. (100-240 V, 50-60 Hz A.C. for 71030, 71032, 71034, 71035, and 71036).

Connect the charging plug to charger socket on instrument or charging stand.

Support the instrument during charging. Do not suspend the instrument by its charging cord.
NOTE Batteries do not overcharge. A completely discharged battery is fully charged overnigh. -
Use the charger with either 2.5 V or 3.5 V rechargeable instruments.

Do not use diagnostic instruments while charging.
Charging instructions for rechargeable handles (Universal Desk Charger or Pocket Set Charger)

To recharge, place handle in charging well, ensuring that contact is
made at the base.For full capacity, charge for 16 continuous hours when brand new. -
For subsequent recharging, place handles in well whenever not in use or when charge is depleted.
Maintenance
Like any other piece of electro-medical equipment, perform periodic electrical inspections by qualified personnel. Welch Allyn recommends that this equipment is inspected at least every six months, more often if used under adverse conditions.

Users must adhere to all federal, state, regional, and/or local laws and regulations as it pertains to the safe disposal of medical devices and accessories. If in doubt, the user of thedevice shall first contact Hillrom Technical Support for guidance on safe disposal protocols.

Welch Allyn nickel-cadmium batteries are guaranteed by Welch Allyn for two years from date of manufacture (when used in Welch Allyn instruments only). Defective batteries are replaced on a prorata basis should failure occur prior to expiration date on battery. The Welch Allyn products listed on this document are guaranteed by Welch Allyn against all manufacturing defects. Welch Allyn will repair or replace, free of charge, any parts of its own manufacture proven to be defective through cause other than misuse, neglect, damage in shipment, or normal wear. Welch Allyn warrants that the products will perform to original specifications during the two years from the date of manufacture. This warranty does not apply to the use of the 72200 or 72300 battery in other products. Welch Allyn reserves the right to make changes without notice in design, specifications and models. The only warranty Welch Allyn makes is the express written warranty extended onthe sale or rental of its products.
