Hillrom Welch Allyn 719 Series Lithium Ion Handle Instructions
Intended use
The 719 Handle is intended to supply power to Welch Allyn 3.5V instrument
heads such as otoscopes, ophthalmoscopes, retinoscopes, strabismoscopes,
episcopes, illuminators and transilluminators. The 719 Handle is intended for
use in ambulatory and acute care settings.
The device is intended for users that are medically qualified, trained
healthcare professionals.

WARNING Use the 719 Series Handle only with Welch Allyn approved products and
chargers.
WARNING Welch Allyn p/n 71960 (Battery Section) is only suitable for use with
the 719 series handle.
WARNING Do not disassemble or modify the battery pack. There are no
serviceable parts inside.
WARNING Do not attempt to directly solder to the battery pack.
WARNING Do not attempt to connect the positive and negative terminals to each
other, nor to any other device.
WARNING Do not charge battery pack in any environment where the temperature
may exceed 40°C (104° F) or fall below 0°C (32° F).
WARNING Do not dispose of the battery section in fire or water. Do not
puncture, incinerate or subject to strong impact or shock.
WARNING Do not immerse the battery pack in any liquid.
WARNING Do not strike or throw the battery pack.
WARNING Do not use a battery pack which appears to be deformed, leaking,
corroded, or is otherwise irregular.
WARNING Handle a damaged or leaking battery with extreme care. If you come
into contact with the electrolyte, wash the exposed area with soap and water.
If it contacts the eye, flush the eye with water for 15 minutes. Seek medical
attention immediately.
WARNING When discarding a battery pack, contact your local waste disposal
service provider regarding local restrictions on the disposal or recycling of
batteries.
WARNING To avoid the risk of fire, burns, or damage to your battery pack or
lamp, do not allow a metal object to touch across the battery contacts.
WARNING This product complies with current required standards for
electromagnetic interference and should not present problems to other
equipment or be affected by other devices. As a precaution, avoid using this
device in close proximity to other equipment.

WARNING A printed copy of the emissions and immunity information can be

WARNING Do not expose battery pack to storage temperatures above 50°C (122°F)
or below -20°C (-4°F).
WARNING Do not discharge battery pack if the ambient temperature is above 60°C
(140°F) or below -20°C (-4°F).
WARNING For longest service, remove the handle and AC Charging Module from
outlet when charging is complete. Do not leave AC Charging Module connected to
power outlet without a handle attached.
Disposal
Users must adhere to all federal, state, regional, and/or local laws and
regulations as it pertains to the safe disposal of medical devices and
accessories. If in doubt, the user of the device shall
first contact Hill-Rom Technical Support for guidance on safe disposal
protocols.
Residual risk
This product complies with relevant electro-magnetic interference, mechanical
safety, performance, and biocompatibility standards. However, the product
cannot completely
eliminate potential patient or user harm from the following:
- Harm or device damage associated with electro-magnetic hazards,
- Harm from mechanical hazards,
- Harm from device, function, or parameter unavailability,
- Harm from misuse error, such as inadequate cleaning, and/or
- Harm from device exposure to biological triggers that may result in a severe systemic allergic reaction.

Operating instructions
- Connect instrument head to the handle.
- Depress On/Off Button on Rheostat Section and rotate the Light Intensity Control Ring clockwise (CW). To intensify light, continue to rotate until stop is reached (Figure 1).
- To turn off, rotate counter clockwise (CCW). Button will click when fully off. Turn fully off after each use to ensure maximum on-time from the battery.
Charging instructions
- Plug the Charger into a wall outlet and the Power Jack on the Charging Base. The Power/ Charge Indicator will illuminate (green) when power is applied (Figure 1).
- Insert the handle into the Charging Base. The Power/Charge Indicator will turn to amber during charge. Charge for 16 continuous hours to charge a dead battery (Figure 2).
- When charging is complete, the Power/Charge Indicator will return to green. The handle may remain in the Charging Base if desired.
- The Battery may be charged after partial discharge without negatively affecting overall battery memory (unlike Ni-Cad cells).
- Diagnostic Instruments cannot be used while charging.
CAUTION The Battery Section is not shipped fully charged. For maximum
performance
charge the Battery Section for 16 hours when new or after a long period of
inactivity.
Low battery indicator
- The Low Battery Indicator will illuminate several minutes before handle shuts off depending on the age of the battery (Figure 1).
- Once the battery is fully discharged, the Low Battery Indicator may flicker.
Battery replacement
Removing the Battery Section
- Hold the instrument handle firmly by the Battery Section
- Turn the Rheostat Section counterclockwise until it detaches from the Battery Section (Figure 3).
Replacing a new Battery Section
- Insert the Rheostat Section into the new Battery Section.
- To connect the two sections, turn the Rheostat Section clockwise until tight (Figure 3).
- Verify the Rheostat Section is secure on the Battery Section of the instrument handle.
Cleaning and disinfection
Wipe the handle and charger with an appropriate health care low- or
intermediate-level cleaner/disinfecting wipe that incorporates either a 1:10
sodium hypochlorite (bleach) solution
or 70% isopropyl alcohol as the active disinfection ingredient. Follow wipe
manufacturer’s instructions for appropriate use, contact times and applicable
warnings and precautions.
WARNING Do not excessively soak/saturate the handle assembly or charger.
WARNING Do not immerse handle assembly or charger in any solution.
WARNING Do not sterilize the 719 Series power handle, charging base, or
charger.
After disinfection, inspect the handle assembly for visible signs of
deterioration at its switch, device end connector and housing. If evidence of
damage or deterioration is present,
discontinue use and contact Hillrom’s Technical Support department for
assistance.

The 719 series Power Handle is guaranteed by Welch Allyn against all
manufacturing defects.
Welch Allyn will repair or replace, free of charge, any parts of its own
manufacture proven to be defective through causes other than misuse, neglect,
damage in shipment, or normal wear.
Welch Allyn warrants that the Welch Allyn 71960 Battery Section will perform
to original specifications during the two years from the date of manufacture,
when used with the Welch
Allyn 719 series Power Handle. This warranty does not apply to the use of the
71960 battery in other products. A defective battery will be replaced if it
fails within two years of the date of manufacture.
Welch Allyn reserves the right to make changes without notice in design,
specifications and models. The only warranty Welch Allyn makes is the express
written warranty extended on the sale or rental of its products.

Any serious incident that has occurred in relation to the device should be reported to the manufacturer and the competent authority of the Member State in which the user and/or patient is established.
