Where to position your insect hotel
Positioning of the insect hotel is very important. The best way to find a
suitable location is to look at the shadows of your garden; find the coolest,
darkest place that has lots of cover. It is important that the insects feel
safe from predators, so check there is nothing in the area which might deter
them. If there are no predators in the area, look for a tree trunk or fence
post to attach the hotel to. Ideally, find somewhere which catches the sun in
the morning and is then shady for the rest of the day. Check that rain cannot
get into the box in a direct line, (the odd drip is fine), as the insects may
drown. Fix the hotel firmly to the tree trunk or fence post.
Leave the box for a week and then go and check it, to see what insects are in
your garden. If you cannot see any ‘residents’ in your hotel, the location is
not right. In this case, have another look around your garden and relocate the
hotel. Leave for another week and try again.
