DESIGN
Note: Cover Styl is only intended for internal use.
DO NOT apply areas exposed to direct high UV rays.
Cover Styl Installation
Prior to installing Cover Styl, we recommend thoroughly inspecting it, as
there can be slight color variations between manufacturing batches.
If imperfections are found, please contact PSP.
Substrate
The substrate to which the Cover Styl will be adhered must be clean, dust- free, and dry.
Tip: PSP recommends using a cleaning solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and 30% water.
For optimal results, ensure the surface is smooth to prevent texture and imperfections from being visible through the applied film. Apply the Cover Primer when dealing with low-energy surfaces. PSP recommends using Cover Primer+ around the edges and at fixtures and penetrations.
Note: An adhesion test should be performed to ensure the Cover Styl is compatible with the substrate.
PLAN THE LAYOUT
Planning the layout at the beginning of the project will ensure that the final installation of Cover Styl will create the desired look and feel. It will also ensure less wastage and faster installation.
Note: Ensure that your plan is easy to follow, as it will be used at the dry layout stage.
STEP 1
Consider the application dimensions. Calculate the total size of the surface
to be covered x 20%.
Always add 20% more for scrap.
STEP 2
Measure and mark fixings and fixtures that will affect the application.
STEP 3
Position the Cover Styl, taking note of where the sheets will terminate and locations that require butt joins or overlaps.
STEP 4
Check the installation pattern (ABBA or ABAB) of your chosen Cover Styl by referring to the Product Data Sheets on the manufacturer’s website: https://coverstyl.com/en/resources/data-sheets Refer to diagram in Section 5.0 Installation.
PREPARATION
Safety and Tools
Keep Safe
Follow simple health and safety practices:
- Create a safe working environment that is well organized, tidy, and clear of obstructions.
- Always ensure PPE is worn (eye protection, gloves, dust mask, and safety footwear).
- Always operate tools and equipment strictly in accordance with the supplier’s manuals.
- Regularly service tools and equipment to ensure efficient and correct operation.
- Where possible, work in an area that is well ventilated or where mechanical dust extraction is possible. This is especially important if cutting or drilling.
- Where working at height, ensure the correct selection and use of safety gear.

Skills and Tools
Competent DIYer skills and basic craft tools are required to install Cover Styl. The following tools will help to simplify installation:
- Ruler / Measuring Tape
- Marker / Pencil
- Cutting Ruler
- Utility Knife
- Vinyl Squeegee
- Heat Gun (or hair dryer)
Electric Shock Hazard: An electrician may be required where there is risk of
touch voltage.
e.g. exposed power points / switches.
Additional Products
To install Cover Styl, the following products may be required.
-
COVER PRIMER is a water-based bonding liquid for porous surfaces (eg. MDF, plaster).
It is applied to the entire application surface. -
COVER PRIMER + is solvent-based primer for laminated and hard (non-absorbent) surfaces applied only at the edges, corners, and other critical points.
Handling and Storage
- Take care when transporting, handling, and storing Cover Styl to prevent damage.
- Cover Styl is supplied with an adhered protective backing paper. Do not remove this backing paper until just before installation.
- Store in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight and between 16°C and 25°C.
Prepare Substrate
Ensure that the substrate surface is clean, dry, and free of dirt or other contaminants. Check that primers have been applied where necessary.
Cut Cover Styl
Roll out the film and use a ruler to measure and mark on the sheet where cuts
are required.
Double check your Cover Styl pattern orientation before cutting the sheet to
size with a utility knife.
Tip: Allow an extra 50mm to each side to ensure full coverage and room for adjustments.
Create a Dry Layout
Place the Cover Styl on the application surface to ensure it is the correct size and orientation. Make any necessary adjustments before removing the backing paper for installation.
INSTALLATION
To achieve a successful Cover Styl installation, ensure the adequate environmental conditions:
- The ambient temperature must be between 12°C and 38°C.
- Humidity levels should not surpass 50%.
- The substrate must remain dry and with a moisture level below 10%.
Butt Joins and Overlaps
Identify where the Cover Styl sheets will terminate and check the installation pattern (ABBA or ABAB) of your chosen Cover Styl. This will determine the orientation of each sheet when fitting at butt joins or overlaps.
Note: Cover Styl may show a small amount of shrinkage over the years (2 to 3mm).
BUTT JOINS – Apply a thin strip of paint that matches the Cover Styl
color to the substrate.
This helps prevent the original substrate color from becoming visible if any
shrinkage occurs.
Note: Allow time for the paint layers to fully dry before proceeding with the installation process.
OVERLAPS – The recommended overlap at joints is 20 to 30mm. When working on overlapping sections, apply heat to the area and press firmly to ensure proper adhesion. Ensure that the upper layer is completely adhered to the lower one.
Note: For textured finishes, use the Cover Primer+ between the overlap layers to enhance adhesion.
Remove Fixtures
Before installation, remove any fixtures (e.g. door knobs, light switch caps) that will get in the way of your Cover Styl application.
Install Cover Styl
STEP 1: Start at One End
Peel back 50mm of backing paper at one end and cut off with a utility knife. Position the exposed self-adhesive surface on the substrate and lightly apply pressure. Check that all the edges line up.
STEP 2: Applying to Flat Surfaces
Hold the squeegee at 45° and apply pressure to smooth the Cover Styl onto the
surface.
Work slowly, incrementally peeling back more of the backing paper and
smoothing the vinyl as you go.
Tip: If you make a mistake, the vinyl can be carefully lifted and repositioned before pressing back down. Care is to be taken on painted surfaces as the paint may transfer to the Cover Styl self-adhesive layer.
STEP 2: Edges and Corners
Gently wrap and smooth Cover Styl around the edges. At corners, use a utility knife to slice a 45° relief cut and apply tension when pulling and lapping the vinyl over the corners.
STEP 3: Use Heat (if necessary)
If the Cover Styl is not conforming to curves or edges, use a heat gun (or hair dryer) to gently warm the vinyl surface.
The heat will make the vinyl more pliable and easier to shape. Take care when working with heated product. DO NOT overheat, as this could damage the vinyl.
Note: While most Cover Styl films can be thermos stretched for 2D or 3D installation, some films (e.g. Cork Prestige, Silk Prestige, Brushed Prestige), should not be stretched. For more info, refer to the Cover Styl website for Product Data Sheets.
STEP 4: Trim Cover Styl
Use a utility knife to trim excess material around the application perimeter
and at fixing locations. Ensure the cuts are clean and precise.
At penetrations, use a utility knife to gently slice through the Cover Styl at
openings, then fold it around the edges and trim for a clean finish.
STEP 5: Reinstall Fixtures
Finish off by reinstalling any fixings that were removed in preparation for the installation.
Final Touches
-
Go over the entire application surface again with the squeegee to remove any remaining air bubbles.
Tip: For stubborn bubbles, pierce with a small needle to remove the trapped air. Re squeegee the area and apply a gentle heat. -
Ensure all edges are firmly adhered. If any areas seem loose, apply gentle heat and press down firmly.
-
When installing in frequently humid or wet environments, use edge sealer or silicone to seal the perimeter.
-
Wipe down your Cover Styl with a soft cloth to remove any fingerprints or smudges.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Use a soft cloth or sponge with mild soap or a pH-neutral detergent to clean the Cover Styl surface.
Tip: For stubborn stains, dampen the soft cloth or sponge with warm water and wipe the affected area. You may also clean using a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and 30% water. However, DO NOT use this solution on printed film surfaces.
DO NOT USE abrasive substances, organic-based cleaning products, or products with extremely acidic or basic pH levels as they can deteriorate the vinyl.
Note: If unsure about the compatibility of your cleaning product, test it on a hidden section of your Cover Styl before using on the entire surface.
For more info, refer to the manufacturer’s guide.
