Instructions for Use
Each side of the Gorgui meets a specific need in fire extinguishing and prevention work.
Wide hoe
The Pulaski wide hoe on the Gorgui has a hoe-like cutting surface for better performance. This area can be used when extremely sharp in non-organic terrain areas without many rocks.
Narrow hoe
With a smaller cutting surface, it’s designed for very rocky areas with lots of roots. The smaller surface means less effort for cutting. This is the area of the tool that must be used in areas with a lot of rocks due to the smaller cutting blade angle.
McLeod
This section is designed to work as a drag rake. In comparison to the Pulaski area, this side has an inverted cutting edge since the large cutting surface would mean a lot more effort. The inverted cutting edge makes the cut outward which turns it into a stripping function.
Cutting rake
The cutting rake is inspired by the Canadian cutting rake. Originally, the use of this rake was more limited in rocky areas due to its fragility. This limitation has been overcome with Gorgui as it can be used in all types of ground for dragging and cutting.
The ergonomic eucalyptus wooden handle design has different diameters for a short grip to dig and a long grip to cut or drag.
Movement
Gorgui tools have an optional carrying case made of Cordura 100 so firefighters can carry it hands-free. The case is equipped with adjustable nylon straps and anti-cut protection
Maintenance
If the tool is subjected to major blows during use, the blades may wear down over time and lose their initial effectiveness. Nonetheless, the service life of the blades may be extended without needing replacement with adequate maintenance. Follow these instructions to sharpen them (this procedure is valid for both Gorgui models).
ATTENTION:
- Only sharpen if the blades show clear signs of blows or deformation. They do not need to be sharpened before the first use.
- Use a manual sander (never use an electric tool).
- Place the tool in a fixed spot.
- Make sure the handle is well-secured and sand the damaged blade in the direction of the cutting edge, respecting the initial angle.
- Clean with compressed air or a clean rag to remove any sanding residue, dust or other contaminants.

Replacing the Gorgui Blades
The Gorgui blades were designed to be individually replaced if broken or excessively sharpened. To do so, eliminate the rivets from the part to be replaced, remove it and redo the rivets once the new part is on.
Replacing the Gorgui Handle
The Gorgui handle is made with eucalyptus wood. Natural wood can sometimes have hidden defects inside. This or incorrect use can damage the handle. Follow these instructions to replace it.
- Place the tool in a fixed spot, leaving free space under the locking pin.
- Use a puncher or pin remover to remove the locking pin using a hammer or mallet.
- Hold the wooden handle tightly and hit the head with a nylon tip mallet so it gradually comes out of the handle.
- Position the flat side of the new handle opposite the head tube.
- Insert the handle inside the tube using a rubber base to protect the tool from vertical impacts. Use a nylon tip mallet to pound vertically. If you have a hydraulic press, you can do this process as shown in the image.
- Finally, use a hammer or mallet to re-insert the locking pin making sure it doesn’t stick out either end of the tube.
