Modifying the Degas Bottle
This accessory kit is intended for 2017 – 2022 Ford F-250 and F-350, 6.2 L gas
engine vehicles equipped with dual batteries.
These instructions are to be used in conjunction with the installation manuals
that are supplied with the V900122 | V900132 (70 cfm) and V910022 | V910032
(150 cfm) system(s).
Please read these instructions, as well as the “Preparing for Installation”
chapter in the above manuals prior to modifying the degas bottle.
- With the battery tray / degas bottle assembly removed from the vehicle, cut the battery tray away from the degas bottle (Figure 5).
The degas bottle is designed to contain vehicle coolant under pressure. Care must be used when modifying the degas bottle to ensure that the integrity of the degas bottle is not compromised.
-
Remove the molded tab beside the fill level markings on the degas bottle (Figure 6).
-
Remove the (×3) tabs on the side of the degas bottle (Figure 7).
-
Remove the excess material from the back of the degas bottle (Figure 8).
-
Measure 1/4 in from the bottom of the degas bottle, and remove the excess material (Figure 9).
-
Cut the face of the lower fins at a 45° angle (Figure 10).
-
Carefully remove the quick connect index material (shaded in red) to allow the hose to mount in the new orientation (Figure 11).
Installing the Degas bottle Relocation Bracket
-
Thread the hold down strap into the degas bottle bracket with the serrations on the buckle pointing toward the driver side fender (this will make it easier to tighten once the assembly is installed) (Figure 12).
-
Install the bracket into the vehicle, in the original degas bottle / battery tray location, using the supplied fasteners (Figure 13).
-
Install the degas bottle into the bracket, ensuring that the tab on the bracket engages the slot on the outside of the degas bottle, and the fins engage the slots at the base of the bracket (Figure 14).
-
Secure the degas bottle using the hold down strap (Figure 15).
-
Once the hold down strap is tightened, cut the excess strap material leaving approximately 6 in.
-
To prevent the strap from fraying, seal the cut end of the strap with a propane torch or similar heat source.
-
Install the OEM battery cables onto the posts on the VMAC degas bracket.
-
Install the VMAC battery cables onto the posts on the VMAC degas bracket.
-
Route the VMAC battery cables along the inner fender and to the inside of the body mount. Installation will continue later in the manual. (Figure 16).
-
Ensure the cables are adequately protected from sharp edges and secured against snags from any road hazards.
Modifying the Degas Hose
-
Measure 2 in from the engine side of the 90° curve and cut the hose (Figure 17).
-
Cut the cuff from the OEM quick connect (Figure 18).
-
Rotate the quick connect approximately 15° counter clockwise and loosely install the supplied hose clamp (Figure 19).
-
Insert the 1 in hose barb into the hose and secure with a supplied hose clamp.
-
Install the supplied 45 in heater hose onto the hose barb and secure with a supplied hose clamp.
-
Install the hose assembly onto the degas bottle and route the hose to the engine spigot.
-
Cut the hose to the required length (approximately 30 in) and secure it to the engine spigot.
-
Rotate the hose on the quick connect to remove any stress or kinking and tighten the hose clamp.
-
Install the P-clip bracket on the base of the degas bracket in the hole closest to the quick connect (Figure 20).
Relocating the Battery
Apply Loctite 242 (blue) to all fasteners.
VMAC’s universal battery relocation bracket is designed to accommodate a multitude of frame variations. Due to the universal nature of the bracket, it will protrude slightly from the side of the vehicle. Final battery location and whether to use the supplied relocation bracket is up to the upfitter or end user.
Battery relocated using VMAC relocation hardware
Mounting the battery box
-
Insert (×1) M10 x 1.5 x 150 bolt into the bottom of the rear battery box mount, this will be inaccessible once the battery box is attached (Figure 22).
-
Attach the battery box finger tight to the front battery mounting brackets (Figure 23).
-
Raise the battery box and straps into position. The battery box mounts straddle the radius arm mount on the driver side of the frame. Remove any barbed cable ties as needed to allow the OEM wiring harness to pass over the top of the battery box cover (Figure 24).
Ensure the battery mounts and fasteners will not crimp or pinch any wire harness or brake lines that run along the top of the frame rail. Run the fasteners below any harness / brake lines.
-
Install the backing straps and tighten the assembly to the frame to prevent the bracket from shifting.
-
Torque the mounting fasteners to specification.
-
Remove the top rear fastener from the mounting bracket (Figure 25)
-
Loosen the (×2) forward fasteners, and the lower rear fastener, securing the battery box to the mounting brackets; lift the battery box up and to the rear of the vehicle to remove it from the brackets (Figure 26).
-
Torque the fasteners to specification, ensuring that the brackets do not shift in the process.
Perform the following steps once the remainder of the compressor installation has been completed. -
Insert the battery into the box and secure it using the supplied battery hold down.
-
Connect the battery cables, and attach the battery box cover.
The battery box and battery are heavy. Use caution when lifting into position or lowering. Assistance is recommended to prevent personal injury or damage to the battery. -
Raise the battery box and mount it onto the brackets.
-
Install the safety cables onto the brackets.
-
Torque all of the battery box fasteners.
-
Ensure the cables are adequately protected from sharp edges and secured against snags from any road hazards.
Relocating the Hood Strut
-
Disconnect the driver side hood strut from the ball stud on the hood.
-
Remove the ball stud and washer from the hood (Figure 27).
-
Apply Loctite 242 (blue) to the supplied flat head fastener and install the hood strut bracket into the hood in the OEM ball stud location (Figure 28).
-
Grind the threaded section of the ball stud, leaving 1/4 in of thread (Figure 29).
-
Apply Loctite 242 (blue) to the modified ball stud and thread it into the into the supplied bracket (Figure 30).
-
Reattach the hood strut, ensuring the locking ring clicks into place.
