INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
GENERAL INFORMATION
Each length of rope must include these indications as well as a document
listing all the characteristics and the composition of the rope (leaflet) and
end labels at each ends of the rope. It is recommended to make the cut using a
heated knife.
These instructions inform you about the correct use throughout the life of the product: read, understand and keep those instructions. If lost, you can download the instructions from the web site www.cousin- trestec.com . The EU declaration of conformity can be also downloaded from our site.
- The retailer must provide the instruction manual in the language of the country where the product is to be sold.
- This product is a semi-static rope intended for use in carrying out work on a rope at heights, caving, canyoning and rescue.
- Only certain techniques and uses are described.
- The advice in this manual don’t eliminate the risks associated with those activities. This material is according to the norm EN 1891: 1998 and the requirements of regulation (EU)
- 2016/425 on personal protective equipment (PPE) used for fall protection from height.
- For belaying a lead climber, preferably use an EN 892 dynamic rope.

- If you are not able to assume the resulting risks, do not use this equipment. Before using this equipment, you must read and understand all instructions for use, understand and accept the risks involved.

Modification – repair – cutting
This product must in no case be modified or added to any other product without the prior agreement of the manufacturer, and any repair must be in accordance with the manufacturer’s operating instructions.
- Any modification of the PPE (such as adding a splice, etc.) is the responsibility of the person who makes it. Therefore, this person must meet the obligations of a manufacturer, according to EN 1891 Standard and EU regulation 2016/425.
- COUSIN TRESTEC cannot be held responsible for these modifications.
- This product must not be used beyond its limits or in any other situation than that for which it is intended.
- You must have received appropriate training before using this product and be familiar with your equipment.
- This equipment should be used only by trained and competent persons, or the user should be under the direct supervision of a trained and competent person. The user must be medically fit and capable to control his own security and any possible emergency situation.
- A static rope must never be used in case where the user may be in a falling position greater than Fall Factor 1.
USE
- Some incorrect uses are indicated in this leaflet, but it is impossible to list all incorrect uses.
- The semi-static rope is personal equipment. During its use outside your presence, it can suffer serious and invisible damage.
- Before beginning to use the rope carefully unroll it to prevent tangling. Before being used, the new rope must be wet and left to dry slowly. Because it shortens by about 5%.
- It must be used with other belay items with additional characteristics in accordance with European standards (EN) and/or CE approved, considering the limits of each component of the equipment (compatibility = good functional interaction).
- The fall arrest harness (EN 361) is the only body gripping device tolerated in a fall arrest system (EN 363). On a fall arrest harness, use the tie-in points (A) specified by the manufacturer to attach the rope.
- In case of use with a mechanical device, ensure that the diameter of the rope and its other characteristics are suitable for this device. Attention : when the rope is new efficiency of the braking and belay device is significantly reduced.
- Beware of the danger of using multiple items for which the safety feature of one item is affected by the safety feature of another item interfering with it.
- Avoid routing the rope directly through a nail or a plate.
- To attach yourself securely, we recommend a figure of eight knot, tightly tied. The length of the rope that comes out of the knot must be 10 cm minimum at the end. For optimum safety, a reliable anchor point above the user is needed and ropes that are not tightly stretched between the user and the anchor point must be avoided.
- The minimum resistance of the anchoring device or chosen structure must be at least 15 kN.
- In order to prepare for any eventuality, before using this rope, a rescue plan must be drawn up and implemented if necessary.
- Before and during use, it is essential for safety that the fall arrest device or anchor point is always correctly positioned and that the work is carried out in such a way as to minimize the risk of falls and the height of fall.
- The user must position him/herself in relation to his/her relay so as never to be above it.
- Always check the free space below the user (according to the instructions in each manual for the associated equipment) to avoid any collision with an obstacle.
MAINTENANCE
- Disinfection: Wash in clean water at 30°C maximum with neutral soap to avoid altering the characteristics of the rope. Dry naturally away from direct heat sources. Temperature:
- Always keep this product below 80°C et above – 40°C so as not to affect the performance of the product.
- Chemicals: Withdraw the product from service if it comes into contact with chemical reagents, solvents or fuels which could affect the performance of the product.
- If it has been wet, in use or by washing, let it dry in the shade, away from any source of heat or direct sunlight.
CONTROL – INSPECTION
- Regular periodic examinations are necessary ; in fact, the safety of the user depends upon the continued the efficiency and durability of the equipment. Before, during and after each outing, a visual and handling inspection required by the user.
- Check the legibility or presence of the product markings, the condition of the sheath (cuts, burns, frayed or abraded threads, etc.), the flexibility and diameter of the rope to detect any internal damage (broken cores, etc.) , the absence of traces of chemicals.
- Knots should be checked regularly.
- Never hide deterioration with adhesive tape.
- If in doubt, discard the product (see Scrapping I-b).
- This product must be inspected by a skilled person every 12 months, starting from date the product is first used.
- This date and the subsequent checks must be recorded on the product’s life sheet. An example available on www.cousin-trestec.com .
Usage Precautions
The following points influence the lifespan of your equipment. The rope can
suffer irreparable damage from its first use. A knot at the end of the rope is
a necessary precaution according to the situation.
- a- Ice and Moisture : a wet or icy rope is less abrasion-resistant.
- b- Knot : can divide the initial resistance of the rope by two.
- c- Sharp edges: beware of sharp edges which could damage the rope.
- d- Chemicals: a rope must not be in contact with chemical agents, mainly acids which can destroy the fibers without it being visible.
- e- Ultraviolet: avoid unnecessary and prolonged exposure to U.V.
- f- Falling stones: avoid any contact with stones which could damage your rope. Don’t step on your rope.
- g- Rapid descent : avoid excessively rapid descents or top-roping, which can burn the rope and accelerate rope wear. The maximum allowable operating temperature is 80°C for a short time.
- h- Equipment: check that there are no burrs or abrasive parts on your carabiners and other equipment. The overlapping of two ropes in the same carabiner or link can cause the ropes to break.
- i-Aging Warning: a rope swells with use and can shrink in length by up to 5 %. Regularly check the length of your rope.
- j- UHMWPE : if applicable depending on the presence of the material on the back of the label where the performances of the rope are located. Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, e.g. Dyneema®, Spectra®: acceptable but manufacturer’s instructions and information require a warning regarding the low melting point (140°C) and low coefficient of friction (slipperiness) of the material.
STORAGE
Store the product away from light, ice, moisture, from contact with corrosive
or aggressive agents, from heat source and from sharp objects.
TRANSPORT
Protect the product from the risks listed above. Preferably use a rope bag
for transport and to protect the rope from dirt and limit the twisting.
TRACEABILITY AND MARKING
Each rope is accompanied by

An internal ribbon mentioning the manufacturer, the standard and the type of rope as well as the composition of the product and the year of manufacture.

The month and year of manufacture.

1891: 1998: Technical reference and year of publication Type A: rope for use in caving, as a rescue or as a safety line when working at height. ADDITIONNAL INFORMAT ION Lifespan
- 10 years from the date the product is first used.( normal use for 2/3 years orintensive use for 1 year).
- Can be stored for 5 years in good conditions before the first use.
- The lifespan is understood to be in the absence of causes which would place the product out of order with the condition that periodic inspections are carried out at least once every 12 months starting from the date the product is first used and the results are recorded on the life sheet of the product.
Scrapping: WARNING: an exceptional event can lead you to retire a product after only one use (depending on the type and intensity of use, and the environment of use: harsh environments, marine environments, sharp edges, extreme temperatures or exposure to flames, chemicals…).
A product must be retired when
- It has exceeded its lifespan.
- It has been subjected to a major fall or load.
- It fails to pass inspection.
- You have any doubt as to its reliability.
- You do not know its full usage history.

3YEARS WARRANTY
This product is warranted against any faults in materials or manufacture for 3 years from the purchase date. Limitations of warranty include normal wear and tear, modifications or alterations, incorrect storage, corrosion, damage due to accidents or negligence, use for which this product is not specifically designed.
