Microwave Cooking Safety Tips from the NFPA

  • Never leave cooking unattended.
  • Read the manufacturer’s instructions before using a microwave oven.
  • Never use an extension cord because it may overload the circuit and cause a fire.
  • Use only microwave-safe cookware (containers or dishes).
  • Open microwave food slowly, away from the face. Hot steam escaping from a container or the food itself can cause burns.
  • Never use aluminum foil or metal objects in a microwave oven.
  • If you have a fire in your microwave, turn it off immediately and keep the door closed. Never open the door until the fire is completely out. Have the oven checked and/or serviced before being used again.

Note: The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) does not test, label or approve any products.

Introduction
This product is designed to help prevent microwave oven fires & false/nuisance alarm activations.

Features

  • Automatic shut-off -power to microwave interrupted (shut-off and reset) .
  • Auto-reset – power is automatically restored after the area around the vent has cleared.
  • Easy to install & use – mount magnetic sensor to microwave just above exhaust vent slots; plug control box into outlet; plug the microwave into the control box.
  • No batteries are required.

Power Rating
120VAC, 60Hz, 15Amps This product is not designed for use on:

  1. Built-in microwaves unless the exhaust vents are exposed.
  2. Microwaves with a manual dial-timer.

Components
The SmartMicro™ has two components:

  • Magnetic sensor; and
  • Control box (power supply box).

Installation

  1. The SmartMicro product and the microwave oven should be placed in a clean-air environment for the installation.
  2. Unplug the microwave oven power cord from its power supply.
  3. Put the SmartMicro sensor above the microwave oven vent.⃰
  4. Plug the SmartMicro control box into a wall outlet.
  5. Plug the microwave oven power cord into the SmartMicro control box.
  6. Wait until the SmartMicro sensor LED turns blue.
  7. Once the LED on the sensor turns blue the microwave oven is ready to be used.

IMPORTANT:
Microwave oven vents are designed and slanted to expel exhaust in a specific direction. The magnetic sensor must be positioned in the pathway of the airflow from the exhaust vent to ensure that the exhaust expelled from the microwave passes directly over/into the sensor. For example, if the vent is slanted upward place the sensor above the vent. On the other hand, if the vent is slanted downward place the sensor below the vent.

Operation

  1. The LEDs on the magnetic sensor and the control box will turn from red to blue after power is connected. This indicates that the sensor is monitoring the microwave and functioning properly.
  2. When a potentially dangerous situation is detected by the magnetic sensor, it will interrupt power to the microwave. The sensor will beep for a few seconds and the LEDs on the sensor and the control box will turn from blue to red, indicating that the cooking process has been stopped. The power to the microwave will be restored automatically after the sensor detects that the area around the exhaust vent has cleared. The LEDs on the sensor and the control box will then turn from red to blue. Cooking will NOT resume until the microwave is attended to by the user.
  3. If the sensor has activated and interrupted power to the microwave, DO NOT open the microwave door. Visually check the microwave to ensure it is clear. Wait until it is safe to remove the contents.

Cleaning and Care

  1. Unplug SmartMicro from the wall outlet.
  2. Use a slightly damp cloth to clean the sensor and /or control box Allow to dry.
  3. Plug SmartMicro back into the wall outlet.
  4. Never submerge the sensor or control box in water or put in the dishwasher.

SmartMicro and the microwave should be inspected periodically to ensure proper operation and optimum performance. Ensure that the blue LEDs on the sensor and control box are lit, this indicates that the unit is receiving power. Ensure too that the vent slots on the microwave are free from any debris or obstruction.
