OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

BEFORE FIRST USE

  1. Read and remove all packing materials and stickers from the inside and outside of the urn except for the rating label and other stickers that state they should remain on the unit. Be sure that all accessories are accounted for before throwing away any packaging.
  2. Gently wipe the exterior and interior of the urn and the lid and tray with a clean, damp cloth, and dry thoroughly.
  3. To clean the urn of packaging residue, bring one tankful of water to a boil following the directions on p. 12. Be sure to dispense some hot water through the urn’s faucet. Let the water cool, then discard the water and dry well.

HOW TO USE THE URN IN WEEKDAY MODE
Although the urn is specially designed for use on Shabbos, you can use it all week long. When the power is turned on, Weekday Mode is the default mode.
NOTE: This appliance is intended for water only. Using liquids other than water can damage the unit.

  1. Place the unit on a flat surface and attach the cord if not already in place.
  2. Using another vessel, such as a jug, fill the tank with water to at least the MIN line and not above the MAX line shown inside the tank. WARNING: Do not fill the urn under a running sink faucet and do not fill the tank above the MAX line; these can result in overfilling which can damage the unit.
  3. Lock the lid into place by positioning it on top of the urn and turning it clockwise as the arrows indicate until the handles of the lid align with the handles of the urn and the lid is secure.
  4. Plug in the unit, then press the ON/OFF button to turn it on.
  5. The water will immediately begin heating. The LED display will show the word BOIL in blue (it will blink briefly before becoming steady). NOTE: You may notice a plastic smell the first time you use the urn. This is normal and will fade over time.
  6. Once the water is heated, the BOIL light will turn off, and the display will show the word READY in white. During this time, the urn will be in a Keep Warm Mode. It will automatically return to Boil Mode (and BOIL will display in blue) when the water temperature drops. NOTE: If a brief power outage occurs, the unit will return to Weekday Mode when power is restored.
  7. To dispense hot water, position a heatproof cup or other container under the faucet. Unlock the faucet by pressing and holding the red CHILD SAFETY LOCK button on its side, then lift the faucet handle up or down. WARNING: Water is hot. Use care when dispensing.
  8. Refill the urn as needed. If water is added and the water temperature in the urn drops below 176°F, the unit will begin reheating. At this time, the READY light will turn off and BOIL will come back on until the water is heated. CAUTION: Take care when opening the lid to refill the water tank as hot steam will escape. Keep your face and hands away from the opening, and allow the steam to dissipate before adding water to the tank.

SAFETY FEATURES IN WEEKDAY MODE
Low Water Warning

  • If the word LOW lights up on the display (it will be red), it means the water level has dropped too low. The unit will slowly beep as a warning, and the heater will automatically turn off. Should this occur, you need only to turn the unit off; it does not need to be unplugged. To resume heating, add water and press ON; the unit will return to heating.
  • If no water is added, the unit will remain in the Low Water Warning Mode without heating.

Boil Dry Protection

  • In the event the low water sensor is blocked and the urn runs dry, Boil Dry Protection will automatically initiate to switch off the unit. Just prior to shutoff, the unit will emit rapid-fire beeps as a warning. In order to resume heating, you must unplug the unit, add water, then plug it back in.

HOW TO USE THE URN IN SHABBOS MODE
The urn is specifically engineered from the ground up with unique features designed for Shabbo’s needs.

  3. Lock the lid into place by positioning it on top of the urn and turning it clockwise as the arrows indicate, until the handles of the lid align with the handles of the urn and the lid
    is secure.

  4. Before the onset of Shabbos, plug in the unit, then press the ON/OFF button to turn it on.

  5. Press the SHABBOS MODE button. The LED display will show the phrase SHABBOS MODE; no other functions or warnings will be displayed. The water will immediately begin heating and will come to a full boil. NOTE: We recommend sliding the button cover-up
at this point to keep from inadvertently touching the buttons during Shabbos.

  6. During Shabbos Mode, the water will automatically reheat at regular intervals. NOTE: If a brief power outage occurs, the unit will return to Shabbos Mode when power is restored without the need to press any buttons.

  7. To dispense hot water, position a heatproof cup or other container under the faucet. Unlock the faucet by pressing and holding the red CHILD SAFETY LOCK button on its side, then lift the faucet handle up or down. WARNING: The water is hot. Use care when dispensing.

  8. To place food on the urn, secure the included tray on top of the lid, then place the food on top of the tray. Liquid foods like soup may be placed on the tray before Shabbos; dry foods may be placed on Shabbos. CAUTION: Never wrap the tray entirely with foil.

  9. During Yom Tov, the urn may be refilled as needed. The sophisticated algorithm initiated when in Shabbos Mode is programmed to make it halachically permissible. CAUTION: Take care when opening the lid to refill the water tank on Yom Tov as hot steam will escape, and hot water may accumulate on the inside of the lid, which can cause injury. Keep your face and hands away from the opening, and allow the steam to dissipate before adding cold water to the tank.

SAFETY FEATURES IN SHABBOS MODE
Boil Dry Protection
During Shabbos Mode, the low water warning will never be triggered. For your safety, however, the unit will automatically activate Boil Dry Protection if all the water in the tank has evaporated. If this happens, the urn will automatically switch off. (There will be no audible warning.) To reset the urn, it must be unplugged, water added, and plugged back in. Please note that the unit will revert to the default Weekday Mode when plugged back in.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

Cleaning the urn is easy, usually requiring little more than rinsing and drying.

  1. After using the urn, unplug it and allow it to cool completely. Remove the power cord before cleaning and be sure that the socket is kept dry.
  2. Carefully discard any remaining water from the tank, being sure not to get the display area of the tank wet. NOTE: Any water left in the tank can cause an unpleasant odor and mineral deposits.
  3. Wipe the exterior and interior with a soft, damp cloth. Do NOT use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads on the inside or outside or you may damage the unit. WARNING: Do NOT immerse the unit in water.
  4. Hand wash the urn tank, lid, and tray with soap and water, and dry well. The lid is also top-rack dishwasher safe; the tray is not.
  5. Be sure the unit is completely dry before storing.
  6. As part of the urn’s maintenance, periodically remove mineral buildup following the directions on p. 17.

DECALCIFYING INSTRUCTIONS
Due to minerals in water, deposits may form on the base of the tank and cause discoloration. The deposits are not dangerous to ingest, but they can affect the appearance and performance of the urn. To get the best performance from your urn, decalcify it from time to time. How often you decalcify your urn depends on the hardness of your water and how often you use the urn.

  1. Fill the tank past the low water sensor (located toward the bottom of the pot) with equal parts water and white vinegar. NOTE: For best results, use filtered, non-tap water for cleaning.
  2. Press the ON/OFF button to bring the water to a boil.
  3. Be sure to run ample water through the urn’s faucet to eliminate any mineral buildup there.
  4. Unplug the unit, let the solution cool to room temperature, then discard the liquid.
  5. Carefully rinse the interior with fresh water.
  6. Bring fresh water to a boil in the urn. Be sure to run water through the urn’s faucet to rinse it.
  7. Let the remaining water in the tank cool, then discard.
  8. Dry the urn thoroughly before storing it.
