Soil Preparation
Great gardens start with great soil!
Soil preparation is essential for successful gardening.
Flower bulbs prefer loose, well-drained soil rich in organic material.
Start by removing weeds, rocks and debris from the planting area.
Loosen the soil to a depth of approximately 12 inches and mix in organic
matter such as peat moss, compost, manure, or a combination.
This is especially important if you are planting in an area with heavy clay or
ground that tends to hold moisture. Properly preparing the soil before
planting will keep the bulbs from rotting and helps the roots to access oxygen
and nutrients in the soil. This is a crucial step to ensure happy, healthy and
beautiful plants.
NOTE: It is important to store bulbs correctly until they are planted.
Unpack the bulbs and store them in a cool, dry place with plenty of air
circulation, where the temperature is between 40-70℉.
Bulb Planting Instructions
- Plant tulip bulbs in the fall when the ground cools and before the first hard frost. Outside temperature should be about 65℉ or cooler.
- Select a well-drained location that receives full sun to partial shade.
- Dig a hole 5-6″ deep in loosened soil and place bulbs in the hole. Bulbs should be spaced about 4-5″ apart. Plant them in the ground with their pointy ends up.
- Cover with soil and water well so the soil above the bulb settles.
Ongoing Tulip Care
Caring for your Tulips after they bloom is rather simple but important to
follow for optimum returning blooms. Once your tulips fade to yellow and the
blooms drop, remove only the flower heads with some pruning shears by cutting
right below the base of the flower. This will keep the tulips from creating a
seed head. It is important to allow the remaining foliage to die back
naturally (usually another week) to absorb the sunlight that helps produce the
energy needed for next year’s bloom.
You can then remove the rest of the dead foliage to ground level. They should
bloom again the following year. If desired, you can also divide your tulip
bulbs every three to five years. To do this, carefully dig around the edges of
the plant with a trowel to determine how deep the bulbs are. Once you have
determined this, lift the bulbs out. There should be a collection of bulbs
which you separate gently with your hands. Replant a few bulbs in the same
spot and plant the others right away in new locations. They should bloom again
the following spring.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. When should I plant tulip bulbs?
A. Tulips bulbs should be planted in the fall. The best time for planting is usually when the leaves have fallen off most deciduous trees, but it has not yet snowed and the ground is not yet frozen.
Q. How do you store tulip bulbs after the leaves die back?
A. Dry the bulbs for a few days in a cool dry spot. Trim off dried stems, and roots. Place the tulip bulbs into ventilated mesh or string net storage bags, taking care to discard any offset bulbs that show rot such as dark spots or soft mushy areas. Store the bulbs in a cool (65°F) dry and well-ventilated space until it’s time for fall planting.
Q. How long do tulips bloom?
A. Tulips typically bloom for 1 to 2 weeks.
