METADOX OMBRA Soundproof Mask

Important Information

Inspired by the pure love for video gaming, METADOX presents the OMBRA, a comfortable, easy to breathe through voice dampening mask that allows you to play games anywhere, anytime.

Because whispering is not an option during those high pressure moments in a game, the OMBRA isolates and dampens your voice to respect your family and housemates, while still being crystal clear for your virtual team.

BECAUSE PLAYING IN SILENCE IS NOT FUN

DISCOVERING THE OMBRA

SOUNDPROOF DESIGN

The OMBRA soundproof design is made to mitigate the disturbing effects of the player’s voice in its surroundings. It blocks the gamers voice at the source, preventing it from traveling into the surrounding environment and disturbing others.

Sound dampening of 20 dB to 30 dB is accomplished for mid to high frequencies, which are the most disturbing ones for the human ear. The  voice is muffled enough to be able to sleep soundly in the next room. When sitting in the same room it is still possible to hear the voice, but with a lower volume and a muffled tone, much less disturbing than the standard voice range.

ASSEMBLING AND ADJUSTING THE STRAPS

The straps are to be assembled on the mask like shown here:

The main strap for the neck is elastic and the length is adjustable. The buckle is in the center and easy closing with both hands. It is recommended to close this strap first when putting on the mask.

The upper strap is fixed and adjusted with loop and hole fasteners. It has a shaped plastic crown in the middle to adjust on the rear upper side of the head and avoid slipping, creating a stable position.

BREATHIING IN AND OUT

A valve is located at the bottom of the mask and allows fresh air in for breathing. At the same time, it prevents air and consequently sound from escaping when speaking.

It is important for optimal soundproofing that the valve sits right. If the silicone valve has been moved and doesn’t close the hole right, air escapes and so does sound. Please check valve from time to time.
Breathing In And Out

The removable plastic part determines the maximum opening of the valve to avoid vibrations of the valve, which makes airflow steadier when breathing in.
Breathing In And Out

BREATHING-OUT CHANNELS

The channels are located at both rear sides of the mask, below the ears.

They allow the air to exit through a labyrinth channel and through an interchangeable fabric part.

This increases the airflow resistance and the soundproofing capabilities.

The more resistance, the better soundproofing. It is left for the user to choose what is his or her optimal setting.
Breathing-out Channels

The shipped mask doesn’t have the felt parts installed, which allows for better breathability. To install them, just put them in the channels:

if breathing out feels too hard for the player with the felt pieces, they can be taken out. However, soundproof properties will be negatively affected. Similarly, by using another fabric or foam the soundproof properties will improve, at the expense of harder breathing out.

REMOVABLE MICROFIBER SHIELD

The microfiber shield is a cloth that can be removed and washed. You can either wash it by hand or use a washing machine. The microfiber cloth helps absorb humidity inside the mask and prevents odors from building up inside the mask.

MICROPHONE PORT

The microphone port allows you to use a microphone inside the OMBRA, as the magnetic connection maintains the isolation of the mask.

The microphone port allows to plug different boxes depending on the microphone to be used with the mask:

To put and remove the microphone boxes, you just have to gently pull it out and it will pop-off on its own. Please refer to our YouTube videos on our channel about the OMBRA if you are unsure how to do it.

USE WITH INTEGRATED MICROPHONE

The included integrated microphone is adapted to improve the voice quality inside the mask, where the low and higher tones change because of closed space inside the mask.

The integrated mic can be used connecting it directly to a headset or to a cable.

In the case of using it directly with a headset, the headset needs to have an audio-in jack and be located on the same side as the mask variant (left side as on the picture).

USE WITH BOX FOR HEADSET FLEXIBLE MICROPHONE

If your headset has a flexible microphone, you can use it with this box. Just place the microphone through the seal before putting on the OMBRA, and then adjust the box to the port frame. The magnets help to find and fix the right position. Be careful to close it right, as if there are small gaps the soundproof properties will be affected.

For more information, take a look at our YouTube video for the OMBRA and it will show you how it works when using an external microphone.

AUDIO EXTENSION CABLE AND SPLITTER

The audio/mic splitter and the 4-pole extension cable that come with the package are designed for better compatibility. Devices equipped with different input/output jacks can be used, as well as using the mask with earphones.

For devices with other connections, for example USB-C or iphone connection, an adapter for the 4-pole male jack can be used (not included).

HOW TO USE THE OMBRA

FITTING INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Take the main straps in both hands, place them at the back of the neck and hook them together.
  2. Place the mask over your mouth and adjust the neck strap if necessary. A complete sealing of the mask on your face is necessary to avoid any gaps which affect the soundproof features but be careful not to tighten the straps too much.
  3. Pull the upper strap over the crown of your head and tighten it by pulling the ends to achieve a comfortable and secure fit.
  4. Breathe deeply and rhythmically to check the correct operation of the valve and the correct sealing of the mask with the skin.
CONNECT TO YOUR DEVICE

INTEGRATED MIC USE

The integrated microphone comes with a 3.5mm jack. Depending on the type of connector of the device with which you are going to use it (PC, video game console, smartphone, etc..), it will be necessary to use a different configuration. The most common options are:

  • Connected directly to headset (headset with 3.5mm audio-in jack): See previous chapter.
  • Connected to extension cable + connected to device.
  • Connected to splitter + extension cable + connected to device.

With the last configuration you can use earphones connected to the splitter too. It looks like this:

Please check the previous chapter for better understanding!

HEADSET MICROPHONE PLACEMENT

When using the OMBRA with your own headset flexible mic, please follow these instructions:

  1. Detach the magnetic microphone port box from the microphone port.
  2. Put the flexible microphone through the orange insulating foam.
  3. Check that the microphone is properly fixed in the housing.
  4. Put on the mask according to the fitting instructions.
  5. Bring the microphone box close to the magnetized base until it is correctly fixed. If the two parts of the microphone port are not properly adjusted, optimal sound isolation will not be achieved.
  6. Check that the box seats properly on the frame.

Please check the previous chapter for better understanding!

REATHING NOISE? USING THE OMBRA WITH A NOISE SUPRESSION APP

If you experience breathing sounds when using the OMBRA, or your teammates complaining about hearing how you breathe, it is recommended to use a noise suppression app.

Since nowadays most of the communication systems offer great solutions, it is impossible for us to develop an alternative good option.

These are the most recommend apps:

  1. Krisp: the primary recommendation is enhancing your experience with Krisp, an AI-based noise reduction tool (free for 90 mins per day and free integration with no time limit on Discord), effectively minimizing breathing noise.
  2. Discord (Krisp): Discord has a free integration of Krisp that works very well. You might be using it already, as it is ON per default.
  3. Zoom, Google Meet, and similar communication apps have built-in noise suppression functionalities that work fine.

It is also recommended to adjust the mic volume. The mask closed space might cause your voice to be too loud.

CLEANING, CARE AND MAINTENANCE

The OMBRA requires periodic maintenance and cleaning to ensure a long useful life. After using the OMBRA it is recommended to unplug the microphone port box and clean the mask by using a soft cloth or soft sponge with a bit of warm water to prevent dirt built-up. If the mask is used for a longer period, it is recommended to air it and dry it with a cloth regularly during periods of use.

Here are some recommendations and warnings for OMBRA care:

CLEANING THE MASK
  • General cleaning recommendations and warnings:
  • Do not use soap or harsh cleaning agents.
  • The OMBRA must not be machine cleaned either domestically nor industrially, as it could be permanently damaged.
  • The textile layers of the OMBRA must not be ironed, as this will damage the mask.
