Brilliant color, hardiness, longevity and plenty of personality are all attributes of the Flame Hawkfish, making it a perfect fish for new (cycled) aquariums of 30 gallons or larger. Lacking an inflatable swim bladder, they hop about and perch on promontories to survey their surroundings. They usually have a den or overhang that serves as their “home” and will chase off those who come too close. Strong circulation and a tight-fitting lid are requirements for keeping Flame Hawks. New arrivals can sometimes be finnicky eaters, but they can be coaxed with frozen foods and will soon learn to accept pellet and flake food. They are carnivores and should be fed a varied diet of meat-based foods. *Although generally well-behaved in the aquarium, caution is advised when introducing tiny gobies or blennies, small shrimp, feather dusters, and hermit crabs, as they may consume them.
