Pairing the device
Open the app and follow the instructions in the app to create a user account
and set up the feeder. Please note the following general instructions to
ensure smooth pairing:
- The feeder should be placed near your Wi-Fi router for the duration of the pairing process. Your smartphone should be in the immediate range of the feeder at the same time.
- Make sure that your smartphone is connected to the WLAN and has a high signal strength.
- Please note that the feeder will not work on 5.0 GHz-only networks.
- If your Wi-Fi password contains special characters, you may experience problems during the pairing process. If necessary, change your WLAN password so that it contains only letters and numbers. The maximum length of the WLAN password is 20 characters.
Filling the feeder
After successful pairing, you can fill the automatic feeder with dry food.
- Press the lock on the top of the lid to open the automatic feeder. Remove the foil from the desiccant bag and place it in the small compartment on the inside of the lid. Assemble the feeder by tilting the feeder slightly backward, aligning the bowl, and snapping it into place in the feeder housing.
- Now fill the bowl with dry food and then trigger a manual feeding by briefly pressing the key This ensures that the conveying mechanism of the dispenser is also filled with dry food. The dry feed used should be at least 5 mm thick and not exceed a maximum diameter of 15 mm. A circular shape is preferable. Dry food that is too flat, too large, unusually shaped or very sticky can cause a blockage in the conveying mechanism. Please make sure that the food slides down properly in the bowl. When in doubt, switch to a less sticky type of food if the food accumulates in the top half of the bowl and blocks the outlet.
Manual feeding
Open the lid and briefly press the button 1x to dispense a portion of dry
food. Repeat the step as often as required to dispense additional portions.
Resetting the automatic feeder
To pair the automatic feeder with a new WLAN network – e.g. after moving house
– the dispenser must first be reset. To do this, press and hold the key for
approx. 5 seconds until you hear a signal tone. As soon as the blue „LINK“ LED
flashes, the process is complete and the feeder can be paired again.
Familiarisation
Some pets need some time to get used to the new feeder. We therefore recommend
the following:
- Place the automatic feeder next to your dog‘s or cat‘s food bowl without switching it on.
- Initially, fill the pet‘s current bowl as well as the bowl of the automatic feeder with food.
- When your pet has become accustomed to the automatic feeder, you can take the normal bowl away.T o arouse your pet‘s curiosity about the automatic feeder, you should regularly put some treats in the bowl at the beginning.
Cleaning
- To ensure proper operation, the feeder, especially the bowl and food container, must be cleaned regularly. Crumbs and grease deposits can impair the function and lead to a blockage.
- To do this, first disconnect the automatic feeder from the power supply.
- You can easily remove the stainless steel bowl and clean it in the dishwasher if necessary.
- You can pull out the feed container upwards with the lid open and clean it with water or wipe it with a damp cloth.
The conveyor mechanism at the bot- tom of the feed container can be disassembled into its individual parts for cleaning in a few easy steps. Please observe the following instructions when reassembling:
- Align the wing cap (the smaller of the two propeller-shaped parts) with the slot in the feed bin and push it down.
- Then insert the impeller (the larger of the two propeller-shaped parts) into the wing cap. Here the pre-installed 24 ml impeller can be replaced with the smaller 12 ml impeller for half portion sizes if required. Note the correct orientation of the T-shaped connector. Then attach the white cap by inserting it into the recesses and turning it counterclockwise until it clicks into place.
- Finally, adjust the impeller so that the rubber parts close the outlet as shown below.
- If the impeller is not properly adjusted, the device will not be able to dispense any feed.
- The main housing of the feeder, which contains the electronics, is not dishwasher safe. Use a dry, soft cloth to wipe it. The housing is not waterproof, so please do not use a wet cloth.
- Make sure all parts of the feeder are completely clean and dry before refilling it with feed.
Replacing the desiccant
Open the lid of the desiccant box and replace the desiccant. Replacing it
every one to two months is recommended
Replacing the batteries
Unplug the feed dispenser and open the battery compartment cover on the bottom
to replace the batteries.
Error messages and troubleshooting
- When there is not enough feed left in the feed container, the „STATE“
- LED will start flashing red. Refill feed and then trigger a manual feeding by pressing the key briefly. This ensures that the conveyor mechanism of the dispenser is also filled with feed.
- If you use feed that is too large (>15 mm), very flat, unusually shaped or crumbly, the feed mechanism may block and the feed may no longer be dispensed correctly. In this case, the red „STATE“ LED will also start flashing. To remove a blockage in the feed mechanism, all feed must be removed from the device: Lift the feed container out of the feed dispenser and dump out the feed. Turn the axle on the underside of the feed container to remove feed residues from the mechanism. You can then replace the feed container and fill it again.
- If you have activated the notifications in the app, you will be automatically informed if one of the problems described occurs
Other connection problems
In rare cases, diffuse connection problems may occur despite successful
pairing of the feed dispenser, e.g. in the form of frequent failure of the
camera image. Various problem causes can be responsible for this. In most
cases, such problems are caused by certain settings or peculiarities of the
WiFi router (e.g. firewall). We recommend the following steps to find the
cause of the problem:
-
First, try to place the feeder in another corner of the room or in another room. Sometimes there may be problems caused by interference with other electronic equipment or certain room conditions. In these cases, repositioning the feeder may be sufficient to solve the problem.
-
If the problem persists, we recommend testing the feeder in a different WiFi network to determine whether the problem is caused by the WiFi network or the feeder itself.
-
If the feeder works properly in another WiFi network, the problem must be caused by the home WiFi network. (Continue with step 3)
-
However, if the same problem also occurs in another WiFi network, the problem could possibly be due to a technical defect in the automatic feeder. In this case, please contact support(smartsupport@trixie.de) to discuss how to proceed.
Note: Instead of testing the automatic feeder e.g. in the WiFi network of a family member or friend, you can also set up a mobile hotspot on a second (!) smartphone and connect the dispenser to this hotspot for testing purposes. -
If the feeder works perfectly in another WiFi network, the problems are most likely due to the settings/peculiarities of your WiFi router.
- First, try changing the DNS server of your router to Google DNS server 8.8.8.8. This action is safe and easy to perform:
- Log in to your WiFi router as an admin.
- Locate the router‘s network or DNS server settings.
- Add one or both of Google‘s public DNS servers to the router‘s configuration:
- Google Primary DNS Server: 8.8.8.8
- Google Secondary DNS server: 8.8.4.4
- Save the changes and restart the router. If required, further information on changing the DNS server can be found in the manual for your WiFi router.
-
If the WiFi router has an integrated firewall, it may be necessary in rare cases to assign a static IP address to the feeder to prevent the video stream from being blocked by the firewall. Consult the operating instruc-tions or customer service of your WiFi router for this.
Tips for Using IoT Devices
- Update the software on your device when security updates become available.
- Change the default passwords and use a password manager or if desired a two-factor identification.
- Activate the firewall on your router.
- Create a separate WLAN network for IoT devices. In this case, the IoT devices run on a separate network that has no connection to your sensitive data or devices such as your computer.
- Activate encryption of the communication on your IoT devices
- Only connect your IoT Devices to the internet when remote access is absolutely necessary.
- Use VPN for a secure connection to your home network when you are away from home.
- If the setting UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) is activated on your router, you should deactivate it to stop your IoT devices from communicating unchecked on the internet.
- Make sure that external access to your devices is impossible or extremely difficult and no changes to your hardware can be made from outside.
- USB or LAN ports should not be freely accessible as they can serve as a gateway into your network and to your data for an attacker.
- Consider any passing on of personal data carefully and protect your privacy.
- Consider carefully when security is more important than comfort and functionality.
Electrical and electronic devices/ information for private households
The Directive 2012/19/EU on waste electrical and electronic equipment contains
a large number of requirements for handling electrical and electronic
equipment. The most important are compiled here.
- Separate collection of waste electrical and electronic equipment Electrical and electronic equipment that has become waste is referred to as waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Owners of WEEE must collect them separately from unsorted municipal waste. WEEE do not belong in household waste but in special collection and return systems.
- Batteries, accumulators and lamps Owners of WEEE must hand over them in complete condition. However, owners of WEEE have to separate old batteries and accumulators which are not enclosed by the WEEE, as well as lamps which can be removed, from the WEEE without destroying it before handing it over to a collec-tion point.
- Ways to return the WEEE Owners of WEEE from private households can hand them in free of charge at the designated collection points of the public waste disposal authorities or at the take-back points set up by manufacturers or distri-butors in terms of the Directive 2012/19/EU.
- Privacy Protection Notice WEEE often contain sensitive personal data. This applies especially to information and telecommunications technology devices such as com-puters and smartphones. In your own interest, please note that each end user is responsible for deleting the data on the WEEE before disposing of it.
- Potential environmental impact WEEE contain substances that may have a negative impact on the environment and human health if their collection, hand-over, re-use or material recovery is not done in compliance with respective legislation.
- Your role in WEEE waste treatment By fulfilling these obligations and especially by fulfilling the obligation to collect WEEE separately, not to dispose it together with unsorted municipal waste and to hand it over to at collection points, you as the end user contribute to the re-use and material recovery of WEEE.
- Meaning of the crossed-out dustbin symbol The crossed-out dustbin, which is regularly displayed on electrical and electronic equipment, indicates that the respective device must be collected separately from unsorted municipal waste at the end of its life cycle.
