WARNING – Intensive use of the pool, or periods of high temperature, may
require an increased level of chlorine production in order to maintain
adequate levels of free chlorine.
If used in an indoor swimming pool, under cover or cover, check the chlorine
level regularly (< 2ppm) and ventilate regularly.
Operating principle
Salt chlorination of a pool works by using sait electrolysis to disinfect the
water; this electrochemical process converts the sait present in the water
into a disinfectant (hypochlorite ions).
Once this process is complete, hypochlorite turns back into sait after coming
into contact with organic material (bacteria, cells) or under the effect of UV
rays or other sources of light, starting the cycle over again.
ln order to maintain a good level of disinfectant in the water, it is important to maintain:
- a proper concentration of sait in the water: 3 g/l
- Adequate filtration time (as a reminder, a good estimate is: Filtration Time = T0 water / 2
- A good water balance with a pH between 7.0 and 7.8 (for more information see Taylor watergram)
- Regular cleaning of your pool to remove any plant debris
- ln case of frequent use, consider using the boost function.
WARNING – Salt water chlorination alone will not clear up green water alone. ln the event of algae appearing (e.g. after a period of high temperatures or frequent use), it may be necessary to supplement with chlorine tablets. Do not put the chlorine tablets directly into the skimmer; use a floating dispenser
Operating limits
The filtration time must be long enough and adapted to your pool. As with any
pool, it’s important to maintain a good chemical balance in the water of your
pool, including pH, alkalinity and water hardness.
When using an electrolyser, you need to maintain the right levels of salt and
stabiliser to prevent corrosion or scaling. It is recommended that you test
all of the basic parameters of the water at least once per week.
For additional safety, we recommended getting your pool water tested by a
professional at least twice per season.
Your local pool store can provide you with the chemicals and steps you need to
take to adjust the chemical properties of your water. Don’t forget to let them
know that you use a salt chlorinator. In addition, temperature plays a major
role in the proper functioning of your chlorinator:
- A water temperature below 10°C will render the system inoperative (E2 alarm).
- Water temperatures higher than 32°C will reduce the effectiveness of hypochlorite. The addition of chlorine tablets is recommended for consistently high temperatures; do not place chlorine tablets directly into the skimmer, use a floating dispenser.
Tableaux des taux recommandés
Check your values and correct them at least once a week.
Parameter | Target values | Comments |
---|---|---|
Salinity | 3 to 4 g/l | Once the salt is dissolved in the water(+/- 24 to 48h), |
salt concentrationwill only vary slightly over the course of the season.
pH level| 7.2 to 7.4| Please note, a pH above 7.8 suppresses the disinfectant
properties of hypochlorite.
Free chlorine concentration| From 0.5 to 3.0 ppm| Measurements must be taken
from around the return jets when the chlorinator is switched on, preferably in
the morning and out of direct sunlight.
**! important!| | Conversely, with tao high a level of stabilizer, the
hypochlorite will be blocked. If the stabiliser level is too low, the
hypochlorite will turn back into salt too quickly, without having had time to
disinfect sufficiently.
Stabilizer rate(Cyanuric acid)| From 20 to 50 ppm| Conversely, if the
stabiliser level is too high, the hypochlorite will be blocked. If the
stabiliser level is too high, the pool will have to be partially drained and
water without stabiliser added.
Additional tests
** Total alkalinity(TA)| **** From 80 to 150 ppm| This level measures the
concentration of minerai salts (carbonates, bicarbonates, hydroxides) in the
water. Il stabilizes / buffers the water balance. High TAC levels interfere
wilh the effects of pH regulation and scale deposits may begin ta appear.
Water hardness| From 150 to 300 ppm| Water hardness represents the amount of
calcium carbonate present in your water.
WARNING – the presence of iron in your water (ferruginous water) may lead to rust deposits in your pool and require the use of a metal sequestrant – please consult a \professional.
General characteristics
The salt water chlorinator uses the latest electronic control technology,
combining performance and ease of use. You can easily adjust the production of
disinfectant ta suit your needs, maximizing efficiency while remaining
environmenlally friendly. ln addition ta these easy-to-use setlings, il also
has a selfcleaning funclion for the cell and a self-test mode in the event of
a warning or error code. For example, the chlorinator displays a warning when
its detects low salinity levels, improper temperatures or a lack of water flow
(see section “Error codes and solutions”, page 39).
In its compact format, the chlorinator and its control box are integrated for
easier installation and greater space savings. The water inlet and outlet are
on the same axis, reducing the need ta rearrange piping.

Preliminary operations
- Check that the electricity and water circulation are switched off. The valves on the pipes connecting to the salt chlorinator must be closed.
- Ensure any pipes used (not supplied) are compatible with the chlorinator. Dimensions of the 2 types of connectars supplied:
- OPTION 1: connectors to be glued 1.5″ (metric: Ø50 mm)
- OPTION 2 : D32 or 38 mm push-in connectors
- Clean up any clutter.
- Lubricate the connectors
- Ensure the direction of water flow corresponds ta the direction indicated on the chlorinator:
Hydraulic connections
The sait chlorinator must be installed on the return line carrying water from
the pool filter back ta the return inlets, as shown in FIGURE 1
(horizontal assembly) and FIGURE 2
(vertical assembly). If using with a water heating system, install the
chlorinator downstream from the latter.
The chlorinator must be the final element of the circuit.
Installation without a bypass is possible if your pump has a flow rate of <
10m3 /h, however, using a “bypass” is strongly recommended ta allow the
hydraulic circuit ta be isolated.
If the flow rate of your pump is > 10m3 /h, a bypass is required.
OPTION 1: D50mm PVC pipe
If you need to cut existing 050mm PVC pipe, the length of the cut must be 230
mm. Make sure to use special PVC cernent for 1.5″ (D50) connectors.
If you want to insert the chlorinator into an existinq pipe (or fit on to a
pipe), you must cut out a section measurinq 230mm in lenqth.
OPTION 2: D32 or D38mm pipes
With D32 and D38 pipes, a minimum of 50 cm of pipe (not supplied) must be added. This pipe should be equivalent to the one at the filter outlet. Ideally, if not already fitted, add a valve just after it so that you can isolate this part and intervene easily.
Electrical connections
The salt chlorinator power supply unit must be installed on an independent
power source and fitted with 30 mA differential protection, away from rain
and more than 3.5 m from the pool. If the residual current protection is
triggered, check the integrity of the system before resetting. If in doubt,
call in a professional.
The chlorinator must be installed in a well-ventilated area to help it cool
down. Do not install in a place where water can easily accumulate, to prevent
damage to electronic components caused by humidity or rain.
Supplementary electrical bonding (POOL EARTHING)
ln order to protect the metal components (including stainless steel) in contact with the water of your pool, it is strongly recommended to install supplementary bonding (POOL EARTHING) (product ref. CL-POOLTERRE50 – optional) which is separate from the earthing system of your house in order to carry residual current from your pool equipment to the ground. This current can lead to serious galvanic corrosion. (Ground cable not supplied)
Warning
BEFORE ADDING SAIT, ALWAYS PERFORM A TEST TO MEASURE THE PRE-EXISTING SALT LEVELS (TEST STRIPS OR ELECTRONIC TESTER).
Only use salt which complies with European standard EN 16401 to ensure service life and improve efficiency of the chlorinator cell.
DO NOT ADD CHEMICAL PRODUCTS OR SALT DIRECTLY INTO THE SKIMMER. THIS CAN DAMAGE THE CELL. IF THE CHLORINATOR CELL HAS ALREADY BEEN INSTALLED, DO NOT SWITCH ON BEFORE ADDING SAIT AND ENSURE SAIT IS COMPLETELY DISSOLVED.
In summer, salt may take 24 to 48 hours to fully dissolve, and even longer
in winter.
Do no place the plastic bag of salt directly into the water as the chemicals
and inks on the bag can interfere with water balance. Make an opening in the
bag, then empty it completely. Once emptied, dispose of the bag in a special
container if it can be recycled.
Required salt levels
The system can operate with a wide range of salinities, from a minimum of 2,700 ppm (parts per million) up to 4,500 ppm. However, the ideal salt concentration is around 3000 ppm. To achieve this level of salinity, add around 3 kg of salt per 1m3 of water (or 25 pounds of salt per 1,000 gallons of water)
Calculation of the amount of salt
Quantity of salt to be added =Volume of water in m3 x (3 – current sait
content in kg/m’)
USEFUL TIP : When adding large quantities of salt, always start by testing the salinity of the water and then gradually adding salt, testing the concentration as you go. If you’re unsure of the volume of your pool (m3 ), you can calculate it using the following equations:
- Rectangular pool: Length x Width x Average depth
- Round pool: Diameter x Diameter x Average Depth x 0.80
- Oval pool: Length x Width x Average depth x 0.90
If insufficient salt is added, efficiency is reduced and the level of chlorine
production will be too low. Furthermore, operating with a low salt level will
reduce the life of the cell.
The salt in your pool is constantly recycled, limiting the amount of salt lost
during a bathing session. Losses are mainly due to the addition of fresh water
replacing water lost as a result of splashes, run-off, filter cleaning, and
drainage. Salt is not lost through evaporation.
IN THE EVENT OF EXCESS SALINITY ( > 4.5G/L), PARTIAL DRAINING OF THE POOL MAY BE NECESSARY IN ORDER TO ADD FRESH WATER.

Use to set the polarity inversion time to 4h / 8h or 12h, depending on the
hardness of your water. As water hardness increases, the time should decrease
(400 ppm => 4h and 10 ppm =>12h).
Selecting operating modes
IMPORTANT: The chlorinator will only function when water flow is detected, i.e., when the filtration system is switched on. Filtration time must therefore be sufficiently long for the selected operating mode (preferably one time slot per day during periods of strong sunlight).
Reminder: use the following formula to determine the best setting: Filtration lime = (T° water)/2
-
Covered Pool Mode (or off-season) Chlorine production must be reduced if your pool remains covered for prolonged periods to avoid overproduction. Covered pools are less exposed to organic materials (bacteria, cells), UV rays and other sources of light. As a result, hypochlorite recomposes into salt more slowly in an indoor pool. Overproduction can lead to increased corrosion of the exposed metal surfaces of your pool. Select the Covered Pool (CO) mode when you cover your pool for more than 3 days, and in the off-season, when the water temperature is above 10°C but not above 20°C. The chlorinator will only produce for 2 hours a day.
-
Spring mode
At the start of the season, when water temperatures are higher than 20°C, but do not exceed 25°C (i.e. a recommended filtration time of between 10h and 12h), select Spring mode (P4). The chlorinator will produce chlorine for 4 hours per day. Below 10°C, the chlorinator will not function and will display the following error code: E7. -
Summer mode
During the regular season, when water temperatures are higher than 25°C, but do not exceed 28°C (i.e., a recommended filt ration time of between 12h and 16h), select Summer mode (P6).
The chlorinator will produce chlorine for 6 hours per day. -
Comfort mode
During the peak of the season, or if you heat your pool, when water temperatures are higher than 28°C (i.e., a recommended filtration time of between 16h and 24h), select the Comfort mode (P8).
The chlorinator will produce chlorine for 8 hours per day -
BOOST 1 Mode
Above these temperatures, during periods of hot weather with water temperature exceeding 30°C (i.e., a recommended filtration time of 24h), or following heavy rainfall, it may be necessary to increase hypochlorite production for a limited period of time. Select BOOST 1 mode (B1). The chlorinator will produce chlorine for 12 hours per day. -
BOOST 2 Mode
During periods of extremely hot weather, with water temperatures exceeding 30°C (i.e., a recommended filtration time of 24h), and/or with intensive use of the pool, it may be necessary to produce even more chlorine for a limited period of time. Select BOOST 2 mode (B2). The chlorinator will produce chlorine for 24h over the course of the day and revert to Comfort Mode (PB) the following day
These are preset modes and will restart daily at their selected time. Depending on the usage and conditions of your pool (volume, exposure to plant material, sunlight, etc.), it may be necessary switch to a higher or lower mode. We recommend that you select your preferred mode at around 8 am.
General principles
The correct operation of the chlorinator can be easily checked by checking the indicator lights on the control panel. However, if the pool remains cloudy or the chlorine residual tests are low, then the chlorine produced is being lost due to high chlorine demand or unsuitable water conditions.
To reduce chlorine demand :
- Check pH values (between 7.0 and 7.4)
- Check stabiliser levels (Cyanuric Acid) are between 20 to 50 ppm
- Check for the presence of phosphates and nitrates, which generally contribute to high chlorine demand: if the tests are positive, carry out a shock treatment with an oxidising agent.
ln general, BOOST modes are not required if the pool is maintained at the correct levels.
List of Recommended Actions
- Read the manual and keep in an safe place for future reference.
- Adjust chlorine production when temperatures increase or decrease (select the right mode).
- lncrease chlorine production when bathing load increases (see BOOST modes).
- Use a stabiliser (Cyanuric Acid) at concentrations of 20 to 50 ppm to protect the free chlorine in the pool.
- Where possible, install the chlorinator away from direct sunlight.
- Regularly get a water sample tested by a qualified pool professional for a more in-depth analysis.
- Maintain salt concentration levels around 3.5 g/1 (3,500 ppm).
- Regularly test the parameters of the water.
List of Prohibited Actions
- Do not use fertiliser close to your pool. Fertilisers are an abundant source of Nitrates and Phosphates, resulting in higher chlorine demand and deposits on the chlorinator cell.
- Never use pure acid to adjust the pH. Deposits of by-products can damage the cell.
- Do not add any chemicals to the water (including salt) when the chlorinator is switched on (switch it OFF).
- Do not add chemicals (including salt) directly into the skimmer.
- Do not allow salinity levels to fall below 3 g/l (3,000 ppm).
Principle
To maintain optimal performance of your chlorinator, the cell should be inspected at least once every 3-4 months (there should be no debris obstructing the flow sensor or between the electrode plates). The cell has a self-cleaning function which uses reverse polarity. ln most cases, this self cleaning function will keep the cell operating efficiently and will prevent formation of scale deposits
THE CELL SHOULD BE CLEANED ONCE OR TWICE PER SEASON.
Dismounting
- Switch off all electrical power, and close the return valves if necessary.
- Disconnect the transformer cable.
- Unscrew the threaded nuts around the PVC fittings that connect the cell to the pipework.
- Drain off any residual water (allow to drain into a container before returning it to the pool).
- Remove the cell completely from the union fittings. DO NOT pull or carry the cell by its cable.
Never unscrew the grey nut supporting the control box, as this will invalidate the warranty.
Cleaning
Always use a specific descaling product for pool chlorinator cells and
scrupulously follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use and safety.
Using an inappropriate or highly concentrated product (pure acid) can cause
visible and irreversible damage ta the cell no! covered by the warranty and
could be potentially dangerous
When cleaning the cell, ALWAYS WEAR APPROPRIATE PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT such as rubber gloves and eye protection.
Always work in a well-ventilated area. Acid splashes can lead to serious injury and/ or property damage.
NEVER ADD WATER TO ACID.
-
Dismantle the cell as described above.
-
Using a pipe end cap (e.g. product ref. CL-TSLCAP – not provided), plug one opening and hold the cell upright, with the end cap side down.
-
Pour the descaling agent directly into the cell until it covers all plates.
-
Wait 10 to 20 minutes, stirring the cell regularly.
-
Check that all scale deposits have been removed. If necessary, repeat the operation.
-
Once all scale deposits have been removed, rinse and reassemble the cell.
Active wintering
When temperatures are low, very little chlorine is needed. If you are actively
winterising your pool, the Covered Pool mode will be sufficient.
However, below 10°C, the chlorinator will not produce chlorine and will go
into error. This feature extends the life of the cell and the E2 error will
appear.
If the water temperature continues to fall until it freezes, the cell will be
damaged by the icy water, as will your pool’s plumbing.
Before the first frost, as a precaution, you should dismantle the cell
(following the previous protocol) by closing the bypass to isolate the
circuit. Store your cell in a dry place. If a bypass is no! in place, replace
the cell with the winterizing tube (product ref. CL TSLTUBE – not provided).
Store your cell in a dry place.
Passive wintering
In areas subject to severe or prolonged periods of freezing cold, before the
first frost, make sure you drain all the water from the pump, filter, supply
and return lines.
As a precaution, you should also dismantle the cell (following the previous
protocol), closing the bypass to isolate the circuit, then store the cell in a
dry place.
If there is no bypass, replace the cell with the wintering tube (ref. CL-
TSLTUBE – option). Store your cell in a dry place.
Restarting in spring
When you operate the pool after a long period of inactivity, do not start the
chlorinator until you have
balanced the chemical properties of the water, in particular pH and salt
concentration, and restored them to their ideal level (in particular ph
between 7.0 and 7.4 and salt concentration 3.5 g/l).
This is also a good time to check all the other parameters as defined at the
beginning of these instructions.
WARNING: if you come out of winter with green water, the chlorinator will
not be able to make up for the green water. Intermittent use of chlorine
tablets may be necessary. Do not put the chlorine tablets directly into the
skimmer; use a floating dispenser. Be sure to switch off the chlorinator
beforehand to avoid damaging the cell.
In the event of green water (after wintering or very high temperatures), the
chlorinator will not be able to restore the water. Intermittent use of
chlorine tablets may be necessary. Do not put the chlorine tablets directly
into the skimmer; use a floating dispenser.
If you need to use a chlorine shock treatment, switch off the chlorinator beforehand to prevent damage to the cell.
Performing system checks
Even though we take every necessary precaution when manufacturing the chlorinator, breakdowns are still possible
In the event of a defect and/or malfunction, electrical power must be shut off and no attempts to repair the fault should be made.
Repairs must be carried out by an authorised technician using original spare parts. Failure to comply with the above clauses may adversely affect the safe operation of the chlorinator. However, other underlying factors may also affect the treatment efficiency of the chlorinator. Such as issues with water quality (water starting to turn green), please follow the steps below to help with troubleshooting.
- Check that the electrical socket is still plugged in
- Check that the power is still on and if the residual current device has not tripped (or the upstream circuit breaker). If in doubt, call a professional.
- Check water parameters and salt levels and stabilizer rate, pH, and possibly TH and TAC are correct.
- Check that the water flow rate is between 2m3/h and 10m3/h.
- Check that the filtration lime is sufficiency long: Filtration lime = (T° water)/2
To obtain optimal treatment, we recommend selecting the appropriate mode for
the temperature of your water, and to use the two BOOST modes in case of high
temperatures and intensive use (see section on selecting operating modes).
Depending on the usage and conditions of your pool (volume, exposure to plant
material, sunlight, etc.), it may be necessary switch to a higher or lower
mode. These are preset modes and will restart daily at their selected time.
If you divide your daily filtration time into several sequences, make sure
that the sequence running at the same time as the treatment is long enough to
cover the entire treatment time.
It is also very important to respect the minimum daily filtration times for these modes:
Mode | CoverCO | Spring4 | Summer | Comfort8 | BOOST 1B1 | BOOST 2B2 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Water T° | 10°C ≤ t°< 20°C orcovered pool | 20°C ≤ t°< 25°C | 25°C ≤ t°< 28°C | |||
t°≥ 28°C | t°≥ 30°C orintense use | t°≥ 32°C orintense use | ||||
Treatment duration | 2h | 4h | 6h | 8h | 12h | 24h |
Filtration duration | 5h to 10h | 10h to 12h | 12h to 16h | 16h to 24h | 24h | 24h |
If you are still experiencing problems, then your chlorinator may have broken down. The chlorinator also has a self-diagnosis system which indicates any problems by means of error codes (see “Error codes and solutions”, page 39).
Particular case: hard water
In regions where the water is very hard (= high calcium content) and in pools with a poorly balanced chemical composition, the cell may require specific cleaning. Remember to set the polarity inversion time (4h / 8h / 12h) according to the hardness of your water. The harder your water, the shorter the time required. This is because electrolysis creates chlorine (hypochlorite) from the salt, but also naturally leads to the formation of a mineral deposit on the titanium electrodes in the cell. The reverse polarity selfcleaning function helps to prevent the formation of these deposits and scaling. If the water is very hard and the TH is high, the formation of deposits is inevitable and these must be removed.
Remplacing the cell
When the titanium plates inside the electrolysis cell have reached the end of
their service life (after approximately 10,000 hours), they can be replaced.
To guarantee quality and value, only original spare parts should be used. If
necessary, there are also bypass tubes that can be used to continue
circulating water through the pipework without the cell being in place. See
the chapter on wintering (Wintering tube ref. CL-TSLTUBE – optional).
Error codes and solutions
E2 : The water temperature is outside the operating range.
Note: The normal water temperature operating range is between 10°C and
45°C.
Solution : Check the water temperature
- If the water temperature in your pool is < 10°C, consider winterising your product.
- If the temperature of the water in your pool is > 45°C, switch off the chlorinator and wait for the water temperature to return to the operating range.
- If the actual water temperature is within the operating range, check for the simultaneous presence of error E3 or E7 (see next page).
E3: Flow is not detected.
Note:
- The normal operating range of the flow sensor is between 2m3 /h and 10m3 /h.
- If the daily filtration time is divided into several ranges and the times of the ranges are shorter than the treatment time then this error may appear temporarily during the pauses between the ranges until the treatment time is completed on the subsequent ranges.
Solution:
- Check that the filtration time is long enough to cover the entire treatment time.
- Check that the bypass allows enough water to pass through the cell and that the valves are set correctly.
- Check that the filter is not clogged (if necessary, clean it).
- Check that the pump has sufficient flow
- Check that there is no debris or scale in the cell that could jam the sensor (clean it if necessary “Cleaning the cell”, page 36).
If all the above steps have been followed but the error persists, contact the
after-sales service for a possible replacement of the flow sensor.
E5: Salt content is too low.
Note : The normal operating range for salt concentration is 2700 to 4500
ppm.
Solution: Check the salt concentration measurement. If necessary, add
salt up to 3 g/l, as follows “Adding salt”, page 30. Once the correct level
has been reached, the chlorinator should operate normally again.
E7: Total temperature sensor error
Solution: Contact SAV for a possible replacement of the temperature
sensor.
E8 : Transformer output voltage error
Solution: Contact customer support for a replacement transformer.
E9: Output current error
Solution: Contact customer support for a replacement transformer or cell
EA: Cell error
Solution:
- Check salt concentration. Correct if necessary.
- If error persists, contact customer support for a replacement cell.
EC: Electronics error
Solution:
- Unplug the transformer, wait one minute, then plug back in.
- If error persists, contact customer support for replacement electronic cards.
