Prior to first use
Before using the coffee machine for the first time, proceed as follows:
Carefully unpack your coffee machine and remove all packaging material and
possible promotional stickers. Keep the packaging (plastic bags and cardboard)
out of reach of children. After unpacking the appliance, carefully check it
for external damage that may have occurred during transport. Place the coffee
machine on a flat, stable and heat-resistant surface. Check that the voltage
stated on the information plate matches the mains voltage used in your region.
It is best to clean the interior of the new coffee machine prior to using it
for the first time. Clean the appliance as described in section cleaning and
maintenance. Then fill the water reservoir with cold water up to the 12 mark
and allow the appliance to make two or three runs without coffee.
Setting the clock
- Insert the plug in an earthed socket. When switching on the appliance the time display flashes on the display, indicating the time 12:00. If you do not set the time, the clock will continue to flash when switching on the appliance, and you will not be able to use the timer function of the appliance.
- Press button to set the correct hour (the clock has a 24 hour format).
- Press button to set the correct number of minutes.
- Once you have set the time, the clock will stop flashing. When the appliance is disconnected from the mains, the clock must be set again.
Making coffee with coffee beans
-
Fold up the cover of the water reservoir and – using the glass jug – fill it with cold drinking water to the required level (the lines indicate the number of cups, 2 to 12). Do not fill the reservoir above the 12 mark, otherwise the water reservoir may overflow. Close the cover of the reservoir.
-
Press the release button on the side of the appliance to open the filter holder. Make sure the filter outlet with drip stop is placed properly in the holder. Place the permanent coffee filter or a paper coffee filter (size 1 x 4) of which the edges have been folded back in the filter holder. This prevents the filter bag from folding inwards and closing. Then close the filter holder until it snaps closed.
-
Remove the cover from the coffee bean holder and fill the holder with coffee beans. Place the cover back on the coffee bean holder. We recommend adding not too many coffee beans, to prevent the unused beans from getting damp in the coffee bean holder. A maximum of 200 grams of coffee beans will fit in the holder.
Warning: Only fill the coffee bean holder with coffee beans and make sure that no foreign objects end up in the holder. Also do not use unroasted or damp coffee beans. These might damage the appliance. -
Place the glass jug on the hot plate.
-
Insert the plug in an earthed wall socket and set the clock. Check that the grinding function is switched on, the indicator light at the button does not light up in that case. If the indicator light does light up, press button once to switch on the grinding function.
-
Select the number of cups of coffee for which coffee beans should be ground. Press button 2-12 (repeatedly) to set the required number of cups of coffee, the available options are 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 cups of coffee. Adjust this number to the amount of water poured in the water reservoir. The set number of cups of coffee is shown on the display. If you do not set the number of cups of coffee yourself, the appliance will automatically select 12 cups of coffee.
-
Use the rotary knob on top of the coffee machine to select coarse or fine ground coffee. Turn the knob to the large coffee bean for coarse grind, or to the small coffee bean for fine grind.
-
Select the required coffee strength by repeatedly pressing the button . You can choose between 3 options: mild, medium and strong. The set coffee strength is shown on the display: 1 bean for mild, 2 beans for medium and 3 beans for strong.
-
Start the coffee machine by pressing the button . After approximately 3 seconds, the appliance starts grinding the coffee beans, and after about 3 seconds after that, the appliance starts making coffee. While making coffee, a coffee cup symbol is shown on the display, once the filter process has been completed this symbol disappears and 3 beeps will sound.
-
Once the filter process has been completed, remove the glass jug from the hot plate and pour out the coffee. After making coffee, the hot plate will keep the coffee warm for 35 minutes, after which the appliance automatically goes to the standby position. 3 beep sounds can be heard and after 1 minute the display switches off.
-
Coffee tastes best immediately after it has been made, so do not wait too long before serving. The glass jug can immediately be placed back on the hot plate or you can pour the coffee into a thermos jug.
Making coffee with extra fine grind
- Fold up the cover of the water reservoir and – using the glass jug – fill it with cold drinking water to the required level (the lines indicate the number of cups, 2 to 12). Do not fill the reservoir above the 12 mark, otherwise the water reservoir may overflow. Close the cover of the reservoir.
- Press the release button on the side of the appliance to open the filter holder. Make sure the filter outlet with drip stop is placed properly in the holder. Place the permanent coffee filter or a paper coffee filter (size 1 x 4) of which the edges have been folded back in the filter holder. This prevents the filter bag from folding inwards and closing.
- Fill the coffee filter with the required amount of coffee (extra fine grind) and softly shake it until the coffee is distributed evenly. According to your taste, you can use 1 level measuring spoon per cup of coffee. This is approximately 5-7 grammes of coffee per cup. Then close the filter holder until it snaps closed.
- Place the glass jug on the hot plate.
- Insert the plug in an earthed wall socket and set the clock. Check that the grinding function is switched off, if so, the indicator light at the button lights up. If the indicator light does not light up, press button once to switch off the grinding function.
- When making coffee with extra fine grind, there is no need to set the number of cups of coffee with button 2-12 . The appliance will make coffee until the water reservoir is empty.
- Select the required coffee strength by repeatedly pressing the button . You can choose between 3 options: mild, medium and strong. The set coffee strength is shown on the display: 1 bean for mild, 2 beans for medium and 3 beans for strong.
- Start the coffee machine by pressing the button . The machine is operational and the coffee will be made. While making coffee, a coffee cup symbol is shown on the display, once the filter process has been completed this symbol disappears and 3 beeps will sound.
- Once the filter process has been completed, remove the glass jug from the hot plate and pour out the coffee. After making coffee, the hot plate will keep the coffee warm for 35 minutes, after which the appliance automatically goes to the standby position. 3 beep sounds can be heard and after 1 minute the display switches off.
- Coffee tastes best immediately after it has been made, so do not wait too long before serving. The glass jug can immediately be placed back on the hot plate or you can pour the coffee into a thermos jug.
Timer function
To have the coffee machine brew coffee automatically at the required time, you can set the timer function.
- Prepare the coffee making process by following steps 1 to 8 from section making coffee with coffee beans and 1 to 7 from section making coffee with extra fine grind.
- Check that the time is set correctly. If necessary, you can adjust the time, as shown in section setting the clock.
- Then hold down button for about 2-3 seconds to set the timer function. The clock starts to flash.
- Set the required start time. Press button to set the correct hour (the clock has a 24 hour format) and press button to set the correct number of minutes.
- Press the button to confirm the start time and switch on the timer function.
When the timer function is switched on, a clock symbol appears on the display and the indicator led at button lights up. The coffee machine will now make coffee at the time set by you. After switching on the timer function, the display automatically switches to the standby position if it is not used within a period of 1 minute. Any set indicator lights continue to light up. The display will be activated again once the set time has been reached.
If you want to switch off the timer function after setting it, press button once more. The indicator led switches off, indicating that the timer function is switched off. If you press button once more, the timer function is switched back to the already set time. If you want to adjust the time, hold down the button for 2-3 seconds, as described above.
Switching off
When the appliance is switched on and is not being used for 1 minute, the
display automatically switches to the standby position. Any set indicator
lights continue to light up. After 35 minutes of keeping warm, the appliance
also switches to the standby position automatically. Press button to activate
the appliance again, but do note that in this way you will also immediately
adjust the coffee strength setting.
Attention! If you want to switch off the appliance completely, you must
remove the plug from the socket. The hot plate cools down slowly after
switching off and could remain hot for some time.
Do not forget to remove the paper filter bag and throw it away or to remove
the permanent filter and rinse it clean. Swing open the filter holder and
remove the filter. Throw away the filter bag. When using the permanent filter,
empty it, clean it and use it again. Allow the appliance to cool down properly
first, before removing the filter.
Attention: This coffee machine comes with a drip stop. This means that
the flow of coffee is stopped immediately when the glass jug is removed. The
filter holder is closed off, as a result of which the flow of coffee is
stopped. Be sure to place back the glass jug as quickly as possible to prevent
the filter from overflowing. When making coffee, do not touch the cover to
prevent burns due to hot steam.
Cleaning and maintenance
Regularly clean the coffee machine. This is not only beneficial for the life span of the appliance, it also ensures optimum use of the appliance and, of course, good tasting coffee.
Cleaning should involve the following:
-
Prior to cleaning, always check that the coffee machine is switched off, cooled down and that the plug has been removed from the socket.
-
Remove all separate components of the appliance and clean them after each use in hot water and a mild washing-up liquid. Then rinse thoroughly with hot water and wipe dry.
-
Regularly clean the outside of the appliance and the hot plate with a slightly damp cloth and then wipe it dry with a dry cloth. Clean the interior of the bean reservoir in the same way.
Attention! The grinding system in the coffee bean holder is very sharp. Avoid touching it. -
Place back all components correctly in the appliance.
Attention:
- Never use aggressive and/or abrasive cleaning agents when cleaning.
- Never submerge the appliance, cord or plug in water.
de-scaling
Regularly de-scale your coffee machine. The de-scaling intervals depend on the hardness of the mains water and the frequency at which the coffee machine is being used. We recommend de-scaling the coffee machine approximately after each 60 times of making coffee. Due to scaling, the heating element can become obstructed. This causes overheating, as a result of which the coffee machine is switched off automatically as a safety precaution and will no longer function. The coffee machine will have to be repaired. You can de-scale the coffee machine with a special de-scaling agent for coffee machines or with kitchen grade vinegar. If you use a special de-scaling agent for coffee machines, you must observe the instructions on the packaging of this agent.
When using kitchen grade vinegar, proceed as follows:
- Remove the plug from the socket, allow the appliance to cool down properly and remove all separate components.
- To remove any remaining water, hold the appliance upside down above the sink.
- Place all separate components back in the appliance and place an empty filter bag in the filter holder. Fill the water reservoir with clean, cold water and cold kitchen grade vinegar up to the 12 mark. The water and kitchen grade vinegar ratio should be 4:1.
- Insert the plug in an earthed wall socket and set the clock. Check that the grinding function is switched off, if so, the indicator light at the button lights up. If the indicator light does not light up, press button once to switch off the grinding function.
- Press the button to start the de-scaling process.
- The de-scaling process has been completed when the water reservoir and coffee filter are empty. Empty the glass jug and remove the filter bag from the filter holder, once the appliance has cooled down. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to allow any remaining water to run out of the water reservoir and place all separate components back in the appliance.
- After de-scaling, allow a full reservoir of cold water to flow through the appliance at least 3 times, to remove all de-scaling liquid and vinegar residues and thus prevent a sour taste in the coffee.
Attention! If the coffee machine has not been used for some time, e.g. due to vacation, it is recommended to remove and clean all separate components. Then place the cleaned separate components back in their place and allow the coffee machine to make one run with clean water. In this way you will prevent a possible foreign taste.
