Aeotec Smart Power Strip user guide.

Aeotec Smart Power Strip has been crafted to power wireless control of multiple power sockets from one convenient power board using Z-Wave. You can find out more about Smart Power Strip by following that link.

Familiarise yourself with your Smart Power Strip.

Warning.

Any power strip, be it the Smart Power Strip or a similar product, should be plugged directly into a wall outlet. There is a risk of electric shock or overload should it be plugged into another power strip or into a external plug such as Smart Switch 6.

Setup Smart Power Strip.

Smart Power Strip is installed by plugging it into a wall power outlet.

The following instructions describe how to add your Smart Power Strip to a Z-Wave network using either Aeotec’s Z-Stick or MiniMote. Of course, you may be using another Z-Wave gateway as your primary network controller. If so, the instructions will vary slightly.

1. Plug Smart Power Strip in.

Find an area of the room in which you wish to install Smart Power Strip. Plug Smart Power Strip into a wall socket. Ensure that it is powered on.

2. Tell your gateway to look for a new Z-Wave device.

With Smart Power Strip plugged in and powered on, you need to tell your Z-Wave gateway to look for it.

  • If you’re using a Z-Stick or Z-Stick Gen5, unplug it and bring it to be within a few metres of Smart Power Strip. Press the Action Button on Z-Stick; its main light will begin to blink to indicate that it is searching for new devices. You may also choose to connect your Z-Stick to software to set it to search for new devices as well.

  • If you’re using a MiniMote, bring it to be within a few metres of Smart Power Strip. Press the Include button on your MiniMote; its blue light will begin to blink to indicate that it is searching for new devices.

  • If you’re using another Z-Wave gateway or hub, you need to put it into ‘add product’ or ‘inclusion mode’. If you’re not sure of how to do this, please refer to your gateway or hub’s user manual.

3. Tell Smart Power Strip to search for your Z-Wave network.

With your Z-Wave network actively seeking new products, it’s time to have Smart Power Strip talk back.

Press the Action Button on your Smart Power Strip. Its main LED will start to blink and Smart Power Strip will attempt to wirelessly communicate with your Z-Wave network.

If Smart Power Strip has been successfully added to your Z-Wave network its main LED will become a solid colour and stay on. At this stage;

  • If you’re using a Z-Stick or Z-Stick Gen5, press your Z-Stick’s Action Button to exit installation mode.
  • If you’re using a MiniMote, press any button on MiniMote to exit installation mode.
  • If you’re using another Z-Wave gateway or hub, it is likely that it’ll automatically exit installation mode after a period of time; usually 30 seconds or so. Refer to the gateway’s visual interface or user manual to confirm this.

If Smart Power Strip has not been successful in joining your Z-Wave network its main LED will continue to blink. Repeat steps 1 through 3 of this setup area to address the problem. Using your Smart Power Strip.

Controlling Smart Power Strip.

With your Smart Power Strip is up and running you are able to control 4 of its 6 sockets via your Z-Wave gateway. These are the last 4 sockets on the Smart Power Strip; the 2 grouped sockets will always be powered on when the power board is powered on. You can also manually control the whole of Smart Power Strip by pressing its Action Button to turn the board’s power on or off.

Monitoring energy use.

Your Smart Power Strip contains Aeotec’s energy metering technology. It records the levels of electricity that the devices plugged into it are using and automatically reports these figures back to your Z-Wave gateway or Z-Wave software. Not all Z-Wave gateways or software have energy consumption monitoring enabled within their interface, however, and you may need to check the features of the software or gateway you use to confirm if you’ll be able to access the data. Where we’re aware of a gateway not supporting energy metering, we attempt to collate that knowledge on this page.

Smart Power Strip can report the data back to your Z-Wave network as either watts or kilowatt-hour (kWh) values. These values can be separated for each individual socket on your Smart Power Strip, or can be accumulated and reported based upon the collective electricity consumption of all sockets.

Advanced steps.

Remove Smart Power Strip from your Z-Wave gateway.

Should you wish to remove Smart Power Strip from your Z-Wave gateway, please read our guide to removing devices from a Z-Wave network.

Reset Smart Power Strip.

There are times when you may wish to reset your Smart Power Strip to its factory default settings. To do so, complete the following steps but please note that, if it has already been connected to a Z-Wave gateway, resetting Smart Power Strip will not remove it from your gateway or hub. Manually reset Smart Power Strip

If you are having issues removing Smart Power Strip from your Z-Wave gateway you are able to manually reset it back to its factory default settings. This method is only recommended if you are unable to remove Smart Power Strip from your gateway as described above, or if your gateway has failed, as resetting Smart Power Strip without first removing it from your network will leave a phantom / failed device within your network.

To manually reset Smart Power Strip;

  1. Press and hold the Action Button of your Smart Power Strip; its LED will blink faster and faster. 
  2. Utilise the LED to determine when the manual reset is complete. When the blinking stops and the LED illuminates a solid colour for 1 second you can release Smart Power Strip’s Action Button. 

With the manual reset of Smart Power Strip complete, its LED will blink slowly and continue to do so until the device is added into another Z-Wave network.
