Digital thermometer (SCH420)

Intended use
The digital thermometer is for use in a domestic /home environment and measures your or your child’s body temperature rectally (in the rectum), axially (in the armpit), or orally (in the mouth). For older children and adults, the digital thermometer can also be used to measure temperature orally (in the mouth) or axially (in the armpit).

Important safety information

Read this important information carefully before you use the device and save it for future reference.

Warnings

  • Keep the device out of reach of infants, children, or pets. These products contain items with sharp edges and small parts. Inhalation or swallowing of small parts can be dangerous.
  • Risk of swallowing batteries! The digital thermometer contains a button battery. If the button battery is swallowed, it can cause severe internal burns in just 2 hours and can lead to death. The battery compartment cover of the digital thermometer must be replaced properly if removed.
  • Clean all products before and after each use. See section ‘Cleaning’. After using the digital thermometer rectally or in the armpit, do not use it for oral measurement for hygienic reasons, not even after cleaning.
  • Batteries may explode if exposed to high temperatures or fire. Do not store or leave any product in direct sunlight or near any source of heat.
  • Never attempt to recharge the battery.
  • This device can be used by persons with reduced physical or mental capabilities or lack of understanding and knowledge. They can only use the device under supervision or after instruction by a person responsible for their safety.
  •  Always check the device before use for damage. Do not use the device when damaged, this could result in injuries.
  • Do not take apart, repair, or change any part of the device at any time, this could result in injuries.
  • Do not use the digital thermometer near strong electric or magnetic fields, for example, magnets, radio transmitters, or microwave ovens. This could cause measurement errors and reduce the essential performance of the digital thermometer.
  • Do not use the digital thermometer within 30 cm (12 inches) of an RF device (e.g. mobile phone, baby monitor, DECT telephone etc.). This could cause measurement errors and reduce the essential performance of the digital thermometer.

Cautions for a digital thermometer

  • The digital thermometer is suitable for use at room temperatures between 10 °C (50 °F) and 40 °C (104 °F). When used outside this temperature range, the accuracy of the measurement is not guaranteed.
  • Do not drop the digital thermometer or expose it to shocks, this might damage the device and lead to inaccurate measurements.
  • Do not bend or disassemble the tip of the digital thermometer.
  • Do not use the digital thermometer if the display shows a dot on the bottom right of the screen. This means that the battery is low and therefore measurements will be inaccurate.
  • Do not bite the metal tip while you measure temperature orally. Simply place the tip under the tongue.

Electromagnetic fields (EMF)

This Philips device complies with all applicable standards and regulations regarding exposure to electromagnetic fields.

Measurement

To ensure the best accuracy, we advise you to measure the temperature rectally. Oral and axial measurements are usually 0.5 °C (0.9 °F) to 1 °C (1.8 °F) lower than actual body temperature.

  1. Remove the protection cap from the digital thermometer. Make sure that the metal probe of the flexible tip is still firmly attached to the digital thermometer.
  2. Lubricate the tip of the digital thermometer with a  water-soluble jelly (only when used axially or rectally).
  3.  Press to switch on the digital thermometer. At startup, all segments of the display light up, followed by the last measured temperature.
  4. Proceed with one of the measuring steps as indicated below, depending on the choice of use (rectally, oral, or axially) (see ‚Three types of measurement‘). Note: It is advised not to use the digital thermometer for oral or axial temperature measurements on children younger than three years.
  5. Keep the digital thermometer in place until the measurement is finished (when the °C/°F) indication stops flashing and the thermometer beeps). See section ‘Audible signals’ for the meaning of the beeps. In case of oral or axial use, keep the tip of the thermometer in place for approximately 5 minutes, regardless of any beeps, for accurate measurement. Note: If for some reason the temperature cannot be measured, the display shows ‘Lo’ or ‘Hi’. This means that the temperature is outside the temperature range. Switch off the digital thermometer, check if it is correctly positioned, and switch it on again.
  6.  Remove the digital thermometer and read the display. Results may vary based on the individual and the method used.
  7.  Press to switch off the digital thermometer.
  8.  Switch off the digital thermometer after use. The digital thermometer switches off automatically after 10 minutes.
  9.  Clean the digital thermometer after each use. Follow the instructions in chapter ‘Cleaning’.

Three types of measurement Measuring the temperature rectally
For rectal measurement of a baby’s temperature, proceed as follows:

  1.  Lay the baby on its stomach or its side.
  2. With one hand, separate the baby’s buttocks. On the other hand, gently slide the tip of the digital thermometer no more than 12 mm (1/2 inch) into the rectum. If you detect any resistance, stop immediately.
  3. Hold the baby firmly so that it cannot turn while the digital thermometer is inserted.
Note: Be careful not to push the flexible tip too far into the rectum.

Measuring the temperature orally
Place the tip of the thermometer under your child’s tongue. Make sure your child’s lips are sealed.
Measuring the temperature axially Place the tip of the thermometer in your child’s armpit. Make sure your child’s armpit is dry. Press its arm against its body and hold its elbow to keep the thermometer in place. After using the digital thermometer rectally or in the armpit, do not use it for oral measurement for hygienic reasons, not even after cleaning.
Childrens’ temperature
The temperature of a child is normally between 36.5 °C (97.7 °F) and 37.5 °C (99.5 °F).  Keep in mind that a child’s temperature varies depending on age, activity, time of day, etc. Remember that some illnesses do not have a high temperature as a symptom. Temperature measurement should not be a substitute for consulting your physician. When reporting your child’s temperature to a professional, state the measurement method.

Features

Celsius (°C)/Fahrenheit (°F)
You can select Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F) for measuring temperature. When the thermometer is switched off,  press and hold the on/off button for 2 seconds to change the measurement unit.
Last temperature recall
The digital thermometer has a memory function. When the digital thermometer is switched on, the display automatically shows the last measured temperature for approx. 2 seconds. Battery-low indication If the display shows a dot on the bottom right of the screen (Fig. 15), the battery is low and the temperature is no longer accurate. Replace the battery (see ‚Removing/inserting batteries‘).
Audible signals
1 beep per second: Temperature is normal (<37.8 °C/100 °F) 3 beeps per second: Possible fever (>37.8 °C/100  °F)
Note: The Thermometer only indicates fever. it does not beep when your child‘s temperature is below normal.

Removing/inserting batteries

If the display shows a dot on the bottom right of the screen, the battery is low. Replace the battery of the digital thermometer as described below.

  1. Press the top and the bottom of the battery cover and gently pull to remove it (Fig. 16).
  2. Remove the battery gently by using a pen (Fig. 17). Important: Do not pull the battery tray more than 1cm out of the thermometer. The sensor can break off.
  3.   4 Insert a new battery (Fig. 18).
  4.  Press the battery cover back onto the thermometer until it clicks into place (Fig. 19).

Error function
In case of malfunction, the display shows ‘Err’. Remove the batteries, wait for 1 minute, insert the batteries and turn it back on.

Cleaning

Use warm water and some washingup liquid. Be careful not to damage the parts when you clean the digital  thermometer:

  1. Do not use abrasive cleaning agents, antibacterial cleaning agents, or chemical solvents. Excessive concentration of cleaning agents may eventually cause plastic components to crack.
  2. The thermometer should not be immersed in any liquid, especially alcohol.
  3. Do not clean the thermometer in a dishwasher, microwave, or sterilizer.

Storage

Put the protection cap on the digital thermometer after use and store it in a clean and dry place.

Accessories

Nasal aspirator
Warnings:
• Never use the nasal aspirator in the baby’s mouth or ears.
• Never point the tip directly in the center of the nostril.

  1.  Remove the cap of the nasal aspirator
  2.  Squeeze the aspirator bulb and place the tip gently into the baby’s nostril and tilt the tip to the side. Be careful not to insert the aspirator into the baby’s nose too far.
  3.  Release the bulb slowly to let the suction draw mucus out of the baby’s nose.
  4.  Repeat the process with the other nostril.

Cleaning

  1.  Disassemble all parts of the nasal aspirator and wash them in warm water with washingup liquid.
  2.  Clean the nasal aspirator in boiling water for 10 min. and dry it afterward.

Finger toothbrush
Place the finger toothbrush on your fingertip to massage the baby’s gums gently.
Cleaning
Clean with a sterilizer or boiling water. Let it cool down and dry.
Brush and comb
Brush/comb the baby’s hair from root to tip. Tip: Carefully keep a hand on the roots while brushing or combing to avoid pulling the baby’s scalp.
Cleaning
Clean with warm water and some washing-up liquid, rinse them thoroughly, and let them dry.
Nail cutter and scissors
Be careful not to cut the nails too close to the baby’s skin. Tip: We advise you to cut the baby’s nails after a bath when the nails are soft, or when the baby sleeps.
Cleaning
Wipe the nail cutter and the scissors with a damp cloth and dry them. Note: You can sterilize the nail cutter and the scissors by wiping their cutting edges with alcohol.
Emery boards
Gently glide the emery board across the baby’s nails.
Pouch
Save all items in the pouch and store them in a dry place.
