If an item is connected to another Apple ID
If you try to set up an AirTag or supported third-party product and see a message that says it’s connected to another Apple ID, ask the previous owner to follow the steps below to disconnect it from their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Remove a personal item from your Apple ID
To remove an AirTag or supported third-party product from your Apple ID so that another person can use it, follow these steps:
- Open the Find My app, then tap the Items tab.
- In the Items list, tap the item you want to remove.
- Tap Remove Item, then tap Remove to confirm.
- If your item is out of Bluetooth range of your device, you see an “AirTag Not Found” or “Item Not Found” message. Tap Remove.
These steps are the only way to remove an item from an Apple ID. Apple can’t remove Pairing Lock for you.
Set up your item with a different Apple ID
To begin the setup process, the new AirTag or supported third-party product owner should hold it near their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Learn more about setting up your AirTag or setting up a supported third-party product.
If the previous owner disconnected the AirTag outside of Bluetooth range of their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you need to reset the AirTag before you can set it up.
