Congratulations on your purchase of a Valhal Outdoor cast iron pan or accessory! We wish you a lot of cooking fun and dare to say with certainty that the versatility of your new pan or accessory will surprise and delight you. Whether you’ve bought a Valhal Outdoor Dutch oven, a Skillet or a cast iron accessory, the fact is that you have chosen a qualitative cast iron item that you can enjoy for a lifetime. Of course, proper care of your new cast iron pan or accessory is very important and for that reason we will gladly give you the tips and instructions you need to ensure that your Valhal Outdoor item lasts for at least a generation.
IMPORTANT
It is important that you read the information in this manual carefully before
using your Valhal Outdoor cast iron showpiece for the first time and that you
follow the safety instructions at all times. Make sure you do not lose this
manual. When you give your Valhal Outdoor cast iron item to someone else, it
is important that you always give this manual along with it.
SAFETY WARNING
ATTENTION! Cast iron is a material that optimally distributes and retains
heat. When you use your Valhal Outdoor cast iron pan of accessory, it can
become extremely hot. This applies to the entire item, and in the case of a
Dutch oven also for the lid. It is therefore very important to keep children
away from your cast iron article when you use it.
When in use, we strongly recommend that you only touch your cast iron with
heat-resistant gloves, a sturdy and thick cloth or a lid lifter.
- Do not throw cold liquids over cast iron when it is still hot. Due to the large temperature difference it can break or otherwise be damaged.
- Do not use aggressive cleaning products for cleaning cast iron.
- Treat your Valhal Outdoor cast iron items with care and do not drop them. Cast iron is a brittle material.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
All Valhal Outdoor cast iron articles are provided with a pre-treated surface.
The pans are all pre-treated with natural oil and can be used immediately
after initial cleaning.
The Dutch ovens of Valhal Outdoor all have lids with an upright edge, so that
you can place briquettes/coals here. When doing so the heat comes from above
and below simultaneously and this makes your Dutch oven function as an oven.
Cast iron is a heavy material and has the quality to distribute and retain
heat well. Cast iron is suitable for use in high temperatures and is very
versatile in use. The Valhal Outdoor Dutch ovens, Skillets and accessories can
be used for various heat sources. Examples are a gas stove, barbecues, open
fire, grill, regular oven or brick oven.
USE AND CARE
To ensure that your Valhal Outdoor cast iron lasts a lifetime it is important that you use and care for it correctly.
FIRST TIME USE
Before using the cast iron pan or accessory for the first time, always clean it with hot water and dry it thoroughly. Because all Valhal Outdoor pans are pre-treated, you do not have to treat them yourself with a natural oil.
WARNING! The first few times you use your cast iron item it is important that you do not use it to prepare acidic foods. This can damage the patina (the protective layer).
CLEANING AND STORAGE
The basic rules for treating cast iron the correct way are very simple. Once you have read them, they are easy to remember and once you have executed them a few times, they quickly become a habit.
- After cooking you should always let cast iron cool down before you clean it with warm water. We advise against using aggressive cleaning products such as dishwashing detergent. Aggressive cleaning products can damage the patina.
- Never clean cast iron with cold water while the cast iron is still hot, because of the sudden temperature difference your cast iron pan or accessory can break.
- Use a normal dishwashing brush or sponge to clean your pan, never use a metal sponge or brush.
- Cast iron is not suitable for the dishwasher.
- Make sure you dry the cast iron well after cleaning and always store it in a dry place.
- To let your Dutch oven ‘breathe’, you can put something between the pan and the lid when the cast iron pan is stowed. This way there is an opening between the pan and the lid and your pan does not dry out.
CARE
To prevent cast iron from drying out when stowed, we advise you to always treat it with a care paste specifically for cast iron. If you do not have this at your disposal, you can also use a natural oil or fat. Olive oil is less suitable because it is not suitable for very high temperatures. After some time or frequent use, it may occur that the protective layer of your cast iron pan or accessory has to be renewed. You can do this by heating the cast iron again and treating it with a natural oil or fat. Please make sure that you do not use an oil with a low combustion point.
- Apply a layer of the natural oil or fat of your choice on the entire cast iron pan or accessory and all loose parts, inside and outside.
- Place the fully oiled cast iron item in a preheated oven at approximately 180 ° C (356 ° F) for about two hours. After one hour you can switch off the oven and open the door, so that your Dutch oven, Skillet or accessory gradually cools down.
- When your cast iron item has completely cooled down, repeat the oiling treatment as described previously.
- Keep in mind that when cast iron is heated smoke may develop by burning of the oil.
If you have already used your Valhal Outdoor Dutch oven, Skillet or accessory frequently to prepare culinary delights, rust formation may occur. Do not panic! This is easily remedied.
- Use fine steel wool to remove all rust. Do this until you see the bare cast iron again.
- Wash the cast iron thoroughly with warm water and a mild detergent, polish the cast iron with a dishwashing brush or normal sponge.
- Thoroughly dry the cast iron after cleaning.
- From here you can follow all the steps mentioned above for the renewal of the protective layer of your cast iron.
