BlumSafe Frame Installation Instructions

BlumSafe Logo

Congratulations on your purchase of the BlumSafe and the BlumSafe Frame! We are confident that the BlumSafe will provide you with many years of satisfaction and utility.

The Frame is an add-on product to your BlumSafe, allowing the BlumSafe to be mounted in a wall with 2” X 4” stud construction. Please carefully read these instructions in conjunction with the BlumSafe Installation Instructions available on our website before mounting your BlumSafe in the wall. We also urge you to view the BlumSafe installation video at our website at https://blumsafe.com/video/ — but please also read these directions which cover items not included in the video!

INSTALLING THE BLUMSAFE FRAME REQUIRES MODERATE ROUGH CARPENTRY SKILLS. IF YOU ARE NOT TOTALLY CONFIDENT IN YOUR ABILITIES, SEEK THE ASSISTANCE OF A PROFESSIONAL CARPENTER OR HANDYMAN TO INSTALL YOUR DISPLAY DOOR.

THE BLUMSAFE AND THE FRAME ARE HEAVY. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INJURY TO YOURSELF OR OTHERS, ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR WALLS, YOUR TOOLS, YOUR SAFE OR ITS CONTENTS.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO STORE FIREARMS IN YOUR SAFE, ALWAYS EMPLOY SAFE HABITS, INCLUDING STORING THEM UNLOADED, PROTECTING YOUR SAFE FROM ACCESS BY CHILDREN AND STORING YOUR AMMUNITION IN A SEPARATE LOCKBOX.

Required Tools

  1. Philips Screwdriver. A power driver or Philips bit in a power drill will make things easier.
  2. A ¼” bit to drill pilot holes in the studs for the lag screws that attach from the inside of the safe (these came with your BlumSafe, NOT with the Frame), unless you have a power driver that can drive the lag screws into the studs.
  3. A ratchet wrench and socket (you do not need the ratchet wrench if you have a power driver for the lag screws).
  4. A level. 5. Gloves (optional), so that you don’t dirty the finish of the Frame or the BlumSafe while installing. Regular fingerprints can be removed with a moist toilette or moist, clean cloth.
  5. A Helper.

Installation

SUMMARY. The Frame comes in two attached pieces when you receive it. You detach them (keeping the screws to reattach the pieces later), then screw the inside, boxy part of the Frame over the hole in the wall you created for the BlumSafe, screwing into the wall studs on either side of the hole (see the BlumSafe Installation Instructions for more information on locating and creating this hole). Next you slide the sloped, crown molding outer part of the Frame over the part attached to the wall, and re-attach the two parts of the Frame. Finally, you and a helper carefully slide your BlumSafe through the opening in the Frame and into the hole in the wall, and use the lag screws that came with your BlumSafe to attach the BlumSafe to the wall studs.

The Frame comes primed in white paint. If you decide to paint it to match your wall or molding, you might find it easier to paint it BEFORE you mount the Frame on the wall.

1. Separate the Two Parts of the Frame.

The Frame has two parts – an inside “box” and the outside sloped, crown molding part. From the inside of the Frame, remove the four (4) screws in the sides of the inner Frame attaching these two parts together. See Photo 1-4. KEEP THESE SCREWS, YOU WILL NEED THEM IN STEP 4.

2. Cut hole in Wall for Safe.

See the BlumSafe Installation Instructions for determining the proper location and cutting the hole in your wall for your BlumSafe.

3. Attach Inner Section of Frame to Wall Over Hole.

a. Take the inside, boxy section of the Frame. You will see four pre-drilled holes on the two vertical wood pieces inside of this section. Take the four 2 ½” screws that came in a plastic bag with your Frame and screw them part way into these holes.

b. Locate the bottom and top of the Frame – the bottom has a notch for wires on the horizontal rail.

c. Have a helper hold this inner section over the hole you cut in the wall so that the entire hole is exposed, to ultimately accommodate the BlumSafe. The bottom of the Frame should be at the bottom of the hole in the wall, the top section should be at the top of the hole. Use a level to make sure that this piece is level before attachment to the wall. See Photo 5.

d. Screw the four protruding 2 ½” screws on the inside vertical pieces into the wall and studs behind the wall. See Photo 6. The inner part of the Frame should now be firmly attached to the wall over the hole.

4. Placement and Attachment of Sloped Outer Frame Sleeve onto Inner Frame.

a. Take the second piece of the Frame, the sloped crown molding outer piece, and place it over the inner piece that is attached to the wall. Hold this outer Frame piece firmly against the wall to minimize gaps on the sides between the sloped sides of the Frame and the wall. While holding it in place, take the four screws you put aside from Step 1 above and screw them back into their holes in the inner Frame to attach it to the outer Frame. See Photo 7-9. Note: Sheetrock and other wall material can often be installed so that it is not completely flat. If there are minor gaps between the Frame and the wall, that is normal, and if it bothers you, you can fill any gap with a thin bead of caulk.

5. Find Holes in BlumSafe Body for Attachment to Studs and Frame.

a. To make the attachment of the carriage screws and frame attachment screws easier in Step 7(d) below, on the outside of the vertical sides of the BlumSafe, locate the four large holes on each side (a total of eight holes), which are covered by black cloth inside the safe, and pierce these holes from the outside with a screwdriver or knife. See Photo 10. This will make it easier later to find these holes from the inside of the safe to attach to the studs and Frame. There are two sets of top and bottom holes on each vertical side of the BlumSafe – the four holes (two on each side) towards the back of the safe are for attachment to the studs, and the four holes that are closer towards the front of the safe are for attachment to the Frame with the 1 ¾” pan head screws provided with the Frame.

6. Routing of Wire for Winders.

a. See the BlumSafe Installation Guide for directions on running the wire for the power adapter for the winders. The end that connects to the bottom of the drawer box inside the BlumSafe should come out from inside the wall, ready to place through the hole in the bottom of the BlumSafe when you insert the safe into the wall. See Photo 11.

7. Insert BlumSafe into Frame and Wall Opening.

a. With your helper, pick up the BlumSafe to prepare to place it into the wall.

b. As you hold it near the wall, grab the end of the winder power wire coming up through the hole in the wall and run it through the hole in the bottom of the safe into the safe. See Photo 12. Secure the wire end with tape inside the BlumSafe or loosely knot it inside the safe so it does not slide out of the safe by accident during installation.

c. Gently slide the BlumSafe into the Frame and hole in the wall, until the edges of the BlumSafe are sitting in the grooves of the front surface of the Frame. See Photo 13-14. IMPORTANT NOTE: Your helper should make sure to hold the safe firmly in place for the next step, so that the safe sits tightly into the recess in the front of the Frame.

d. Take the four thick 1 ½” long carriage screws that came with your BlumSafe (not the screw that came with the Frame). Find the back holes on the inside of the BlumSafe that you located in Step 5, and, with your helper still holding the BlumSafe tightly against the Frame so that the BlumSafe sits fully and evenly within the surface groove in the top of the Frame, drill pilot holes through these holes wall studs (if you have a power driver, pilot holes should not be necessary). See Photo 15. CAUTION: the pilot holes should not be drilled longer than 1 1/4” deep.

e. WITH YOUR HELPER CONTINUING TO HOLD THE SAFE TIGHTLY IN PLACE , use the ratchet wrench (or power driver) to screw the carriage screws into all four of the deeper holes on each inside side of the BlumSafe, into the studs. Start with the top two screws, driving each one in until a couple of turns of thread are still exposed, i.e., don’t screw it in completely. Then do the same with the other top screw. Doublecheck to make sure the Frame of the BlumSafe is centered in the surface groove in the top of the Frame (there should be about an 1/8” of gap on each side), and then tighten each of these screws. Follow the same procedure with the two bottom carriage screws.

f. Next take the four 1 ¾” pan head screws that came with the Frame, and follow the same procedure as with the large carriage screws, starting with the top screws, and carefully drive those into the top front holes inside the BlumSafe to attach it to the Frame, making sure the Safe is centered in the Frame and all the way into the surface groove in the top of the Frame. MAKE SURE NOT TO OVERTIGHTEN THESE SCREWS.

8. Follow Instructions From the BlumSafe Installation Manual for finishing installation off parts inside the safe and lock programming.
