SILVA MARINE COMPASS 100FC
100FC is a marine compass made for powerboats and sailing boats. It has a
narrow design to fit any dashboard. This is the perfect compass for yachtsmen
who demand absolute accuracy and a steady reading in all conditions.
Features include double scales, a built-in deviation compensator, integrated
illumination in the adjustable protection cover, and four lubber lines that
remain vertical even in rough seas. 100FC also has a built-in 3-part
protection cover and a red backlight (12V). 100FC is flush-mounted with a dome
size of 100 mm and a mounting hole size of 100 mm. It includes a foam gasket,
mounting screws, and a mounting template for easy mounting. This compass also
includes a compensator screwdriver. Max healing angle: 30 degrees. Max pitch
angle: 30 degrees.
This compass is available in MN, ME, and MS balancing.
SILVA QUALITY
The Silva quality ensures durability and excellent readability; the capsule
bowl is made from clear and scratch-resistant acrylic. The combination of a
sapphire jewel bearing and a
hardened steel pivot minimizes friction, which in turn gives rapid and
accurate movements. Silva marine compasses have a no-spin compass card is
designed for perfect dampening and exact reading. You can trust that even when
your boat is exposed to rough seas the gimballed suspension system makes sure
the functionality is never disturbed hence you will always be able to read the
compass accurately.

ILLUMINATION
Built-in illumination for 12V.
Adaptation to 24V-illumination: connect 270 ohms, 0.5 W resistor in series.
POSITIONING
The compass should be positioned where it can be easily read from all angles, even in darkness when illuminated. Position the compass as far as possible away from iron objects or other disturbing magnetic sources such as loudspeakers, windscreen wipers, instruments, etc. NB! Silva’s electronic instruments do not disturb the compass. When checking for magnetic disturbance, use an ordinary Silva handheld compass, held in the fore-and-aft direction around the intended mounting site. In most cases, 0.5 to 1 meter between the compass and the source of disturbance will be sufficient. Do not forget to switch on all electrical equipment near the compass when making this check.
MOUNTING
FLUSH MOUNT Silva 100FC is designed for horizontal flush mounting. It should be mounted in a steady base to prevent the oscillation of the card. Mounting angle: pitch 0-15°.
- Drill a hole with Ø 97 mm according to the mounting template. NB! Be sure to have a free depth of 60 mm minimum.
- Pull to separate the base part and top part of the compass.
- Place the base part in the hole, with the foam gasket between the compass and the deck to ensure water protection.
- Make sure that the boat symbol (found on the base part) is facing toward the bow.
- Drill the 4 screw holes as per the template. Mount the base part to the deck with the enclosed 4 screws. NB! Replacement screws must be of non-magnetic material. For all through deck mounting, sealing is recommended.
- Align the top part of the compass in the fore-and-aft direction and mount it to the base part by clicking it into position. Make sure to pull the cable for the illumination through the hole in the base part before mounting the top part.
COMPENSATION AND DEVIATION
Compensation is recommended if the deviation is more than 5 degrees when the
compass is in its normal mounting position.
If the error is less than 5 degrees, it is sufficient to produce a deviation
table. Adjust by using a compensator (optional extra) and eliminate or at
least reduce the errors that iron or other sources of magnetic disturbance may
have on the compass.
When compensating, the boat should be in an area that is not affected by
permanent- or electromagnetic disturbances.
- Aim the boat due North and turn the ”N/S” screw until the compass reading is 0°.
- Aim the boat due East and turn the ”E/W” screw until the compass reading is 90°.
- Aim the boat due South. If the compass does not show 180°, turn the ”N/S” screw until the error is halved. (E.g. If the error is 6° – turn the screw until the error is 3 °.)
- Aim the boat due West. If the compass does not show 270°, turn the screw until the error is halved.
- Go through the procedure again and check the adjusted values.
- Check the compass every 20 degrees and produce a deviation table and deviation curve. As the magnetic conditions in a boat are liable to change, we recommend checking the compass once a year and always after the installation of equipment that might affect the compass.
NB! Do not regard the compass as an accurate navigational instrument until the compensation is carried out and the deviation table is produced. Whenever in doubt, please seek the advice of a compass adjuster!
MAINTENANCE
To clean the compass, use a mild soap solution or detergent. Do not use strong
solvents, such as spirit, acetone, or petroleum.
The compass tolerates temperatures down to -30°C. It is advisable not to
subject it to severe cold for long periods.
