KOGEL Brake Pads Boast Ceramic Barrier
TOOLS NEEDED FOR THIS INSTALLATION
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Lint free rag
- Brake Piston/Pad Spreader or a Plastic Tire Iron
- Emery Cloth or 180grit or higher sandpaper
- Allen wrench, Flathead screwdriver, Needle nose plyers. (You will need some or all of these tools for the job. Sizes will vary between makes and models of your calipers)
STEP 1
- Remove wheels from the bike.
STEP 2
- If you will be keeping your existing rotors: clean the frontside and back side of the rotor with 90% or higher Isopropyl alcohol and a lint free rag.
STEP 3
- Once the rotor has been cleaned with alcohol, take some emery cloth or 180grit or higher sandpaper and slightly scuff the rotor. This will allow the new pads to mate to the rotor, resulting in the best possible braking performance.
STEP 4
- Before removing brake pads, using either a clean tire lever or brake piston/pad spreader, gently spread pads as far out as they will go using a gentle rocking or twisting motion with the tool(This step will come into use later and will save you time and a headache)
STEP 5:
Your brake caliper will have either a cotter pin or small bolt going through
one pad, then a spring, then another pad. Remove the cotter pin/bolt from the
brake caliper.
STEP 6
- Depending on the brake caliper model, your pads may come out from below the caliper, or out through the top. Grabbing both pads at the same time, remove them from the caliper gently.
STEP 7
- Taking 90% or higher Isopropyl alcohol, clean out the inside of the caliper of old dirt and brake pad residue. Make sure to thoroughly blow out (with an air compressor) or allow ample time for the remaining alcohol to evaporate. Once the caliper is clean and there are no contaminates left it is time to install your new pads!
STEP 8
- Taking your new pads(make sure the spring is properly inserted in between both pads, the spring should be resting on the backplate of each pad), gently slide the pad into the caliper from the top or the bottom(again this will depend on the model of brake caliper you have).
STEP 9
- Going from the outside of the brake caliper toward the bike frame, gently slide the cotter pin or bolt back thru the caliper, then the brake pads and spring (sometimes you may need to wiggle the cotter pin or bolt to help find its way thru all of the holes).
If your brake uses a cotter pin, bend the cotter just enough so that it cannot be pulled out from the caliper. If your brake caliper uses a bolt, re-install the small safety spring clip at the end of the bolt. STEP 10
- Re-install the wheel.
STE P 11
- Before squeezing the brake lever, loosen both brake caliper bolts so that the caliper freely moves from side to side.
STEP 12
- Squeeze the brake lever 5-10 times or until the new pads start contacting the rotor.
STEP 13
- Once the new pads start contacting the rotor, squeeze and hold the lever while you tighten the brake caliper bolts to spec
STEP 14
- Double check that the pads are not rubbing on the rotors….you’re now ready to bed in the brake pads!
