Automatic switch-off
To save energy, the appliance will switch itself off automatically around 35 minutes after the brewing cycle has been completed.
Before using it for the first time
Before making coffee for the first time, let the appliance go through two or three filtration cycles using the indicated maximum amount of cold water, but without using ground coffee. This should also be done if the appliance has not been used for an extended period of time, and after descaling.
General information

  • A measuring scale on the water container and on the glass carafe facilitates filling the container with the correct amount of clean water. The scale refers to regular-sized cups of approx.125 ml.
  • Do not exceed the indicated max. a number of cups.
  • If several consecutive brewing cycles are required, switch off the coffee maker after each cycle and let the appliance cool down for approx. 5 minutes.
  • Important note: When filling the appliance with fresh water shortly after a brewing cycle is completed, there is a danger of scalding from hot water or steam escaping through the water outlet.

Making coffee

  • Filling with water:
Open the water container lid and fill the container with the desired quantity of water.
    Close the water container lid.

  • Inserting the paper filter:
Open the swing-out filter sideways and insert a size-2 paper filter into the filter holder, first folding down the perforated sides of the filter.
Alternatively, the enclosed permanent filter may be used.

  • Filling with ground coffee:
For each regular-sized cup (125 ml), a measure of about 6 g (= 1½ – 2 teaspoons) of medium ground coffee will be required. Close the swing-out filter afterward.

  • Preparing the glass carafe:
Fit the lid onto the carafe, and then place the carafe into the appliance. If correctly inserted, the lid will disable the drip-stop mechanism in the filter holder during the brewing cycle.

  • Starting the brewing cycle:
Insert the plug into a suitable wall outlet and use the On/Off switch to turn the coffee maker on. The filtration cycle starts and the water passes through the filter.

  • Removing the glass carafe:
Wait until all the water has passed through the filter before the carafe is removed from the appliance.

  • Keeping the coffee warm:
The coffee may be kept warm inside the carafe by leaving it standing on the hotplate.
The plate is kept hot for around 35 minutes after brewing is complete.

  • Interrupting the brewing/keeping warm cycle:
To interrupt the brewing cycle, or if the keeping-warm function is not needed, use the On/Off switch to turn the appliance off.

  • Switching off the coffee maker:
Once brewing/keeping-warm is complete, remove the plug from the wall socket.

Descaling

  • Depending on the water quality (lime content) in your area as well as the frequency of use, all thermal household appliances using hot water need descaling (i.e. removal of lime deposits) on a regular basis to warrant proper functioning.
  • Any warranty claim will be null and void if the appliance malfunctions because of insufficient descaling.
  • A lengthening of the brewing time and increased noise during brewing indicate that descaling of the coffee maker has become necessary.
  • An excessive build-up of lime deposits is very difficult to remove, even when strong descaling agents are used. It may also cause the brewing system to leak. We therefore strongly recommend descaling the appliance after each thirty to forty brewing cycles. For descaling, a vinegar solution may be used as follows:
  • Mix 40 ml of vinegar essence with the indicated maximum amount of cold water.
  • Pour the descaling solution into the water container, insert a paper filter into the filter holder without adding any ground coffee as described in the section Making coffee, and let the appliance run through one filtration cycle. Repeat the procedure if necessary. During descaling, ensure sufficient ventilation and do not inhaleany vinegar vapors.
  • To clean the appliance after descaling, let it run through 2-3 filtration cycles using clean water only.
  • Do not pour descalers down enamel sinks.

Cleaning and care

  • Before cleaning the appliance, ensure it is disconnected from the power supply and has cooled down completely.
  • To avoid the risk of electric shock, do not clean the appliance with liquids or immerse it; do not clean under running tap water. The appliance may be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth, using a mild detergent. Wipe dry afterward.
  • Do not use abrasives or harsh cleaning solutions.
  • To remove the used coffee grounds, open the swing-out filter, lift out the paper (or permanent) filter and dispose of the grounds; (as a natural substance the grounds may be composted).
  • The filter insert or permanent filter can be cleaned with warm soapy water. ∙ The swing-out filter can be taken off for cleaning. Lift up the swing-out filter slightly and separate it from the hinge by pulling it downwards. Rinse out the filter before replacing it, and then close it again.
  • The glass carafe may be cleaned with warm water after use. Wipe dry afterward.
  • Do not put the appliance or any of its accessory parts in a dishwasher.
