Your Foot Defender

The Foot Defender is a foam lined brace with pneumatic fit adjustment, a rigid outer sole, lower leg bracing system, and high performance shock absorbing insole. It is used to relieve and protect the injured foot and ankle.The Foot Defender reduces pressure and friction on the bottom of the foot to provide a healing environment for Diabetic Foot Ulcers. The Foot Defender works in a similar way to a cast with the benefit of being able to be remove it for bandage changes or cleaning of the foot and ankle. The footbed height of the Foot Defender is slightly higher than a normal pair of running shoes. We suggest that you wear running shoes or something similar on the other foot. Try to keep your feet as evenly balanced as you can.

Putting Your Foot Defender On

The Foot Defender was designed to be easy to put on and take off, fit as many foot and ankle shapes as possible, and work with a minimum of fuss. It is of the utmost importance to wear your boot properly so that it functions optimally. Follow these steps to use your Foot Defender:L4361-

  • Step 1: Make sure the leg and foot are clean and dry.
  • Step 2: Put on a sock. Always wear your Foot Defender with a sock and/or compression bandage as directed by your healthcare professional.L4361- 00860001567618 Foot Defender-FIG3
  • Step 3: Unfasten the three Velcro tabs of the Anterior Spat from one side of the Foot Defender.
  • Step 4: Place foot inside the Foot Defender. Make sure the heel is firmly on the footbed and all the way back against the vertical portion inside of the Foot Defender.L4361- 00860001567618 Foot Defender-FIG4
  • Step 5: Reposition the Anterior Spat on Foot Defender. Ensure all Velcro tabs are aligned and firmly fastened between corresponding wings of the Anterior Spat and the Foot Defender.L4361- 00860001567618 Foot Defender-FIG5
  • Step 6: Pull each Velcro tab of the anterior spat until the Foot Defender fits snuggly. Ensure that the Velcro tabs are pressed down and engaged securely. The foot should not be able to move much.L4361- 00860001567618 Foot Defender-FIG6
  • Step 7: Locate the pneumatic pump on the side of the Foot Defender. Repeatedly press the pump until the pneumatic air bladder fills the gaps between the leg and the vertical shaft of the Foot Defender completing and snug fit.

CAUTION: If you have reduced sensation be sure to have someone inspect the fit to reduce the risk of inappropriate fit leading to areas rubbing or high pressure.

Removing Your Foot Defender

Locate and press the release valve next to the pneumatic pump on the Foot Defender to loosen. Unfasten all Velcro tabs and remove the Anterior Spat.

Cleaning

If the Foot Defender gets soiled or dirty it can be wiped down with a disposable baby wipe or disinfecting wipe. Let air dry before using again.

Duration of use

Your doctor will decide how long you need to wear the Foot Defender. Please follow the doctor’s instructions even if you feel improvement and would like to stop wearing it sooner. Your doctor will be checking your progress and will decide what is in your best long-term interest.

Things to Remember

You should inspect your skin under the brace daily to check for any breakdown. If you notice areas of breakdown, localized redness, or have any issues please call your doctor. Always use the Foot Defender in accordance with your doctor’s instructions and guidance. Your health care team may have given you this device as part of your care. If so, please use it as directed.
