  • information on servicing

    1. Checking the area
Before starting work on systems containing flammable refrigerants, safety checks are necessary so as to ensure the risk of ignition is minimized. When repairing the refrigeration system, the following precautions must be taken before starting work on the system.

    2. Work procedure
Work must follow a controlled procedure so as to minimize the risk of a flammable gas or vapor being present while work is in progress.

    3. General work area
All maintenance staff and others working in the vicinity of the appliance must be instructed on the nature of the work being carried out. Work in confined spaces must be avoided. The area around the workspace must be cordoned off. Ensure that conditions within the area have been made safe by checking for flammable material.

    4. Checking for the presence of refrigerant
The area must be checked using an appropriate refrigerant detector before and during work so as to ensure the technician is aware of any potentially flammable atmosphere. Ensure that the leak detection equipment being used is suitable for use with flammable refrigerants, i.e. non-sparking, adequately sealed or intrinsically safe.

    5. Fire extinguishers
If any hot work is to be conducted on the refrigeration equipment or any associated parts, appropriate fire extinguishing equipment must be available. Keep a dry powder or CO2 fire extinguisher adjacent to the charging area.

    6. No ignition sources
Anyone doing work on a refrigeration system that involves exposing any pipework that contains or has contained flammable refrigerant must not use any sources of ignition in such a manner that there is a potential risk of fire or explosion. All possible ignition sources, including smoking, should be kept sufficiently far away from the installation site and during repair work, removal, and disposal as flammable refrigerant may be released into the surrounding atmosphere during such operations. Before work takes place, the area around the equipment must be surveyed to make sure there are no flammable hazards or ignition risks. No Smoking signs must be displayed.

    7. Ventilated area
Ensure that the area is in the open or ventilated adequately before opening the system or conducting any hot work. Some ventilation must be provided while work is in progress.
The ventilation should safely disperse any released refrigerant and, ideally, expel it into the atmosphere outdoors.

    8. Checking the refrigeration equipment
Electrical components that are being replaced must be fit for purpose and to the correct specification. The manufacturer’s maintenance and service guidelines must be followed at all times. If in doubt, consult the manufacturer’s technical department for assistance. The following checks must be carried out for installations using flammable refrigerants:
      The charge size is in accordance with the room size within which the parts containing refrigerant are installed;
      The ventilation system and vents are operating adequately and are not obstructed; If an indirect refrigeration circuit is being used, the secondary circuit must be checked for the presence of refrigerant;
The labeling of the equipment is still visible and legible. Labels and signs that are illegible must be replaced; Refrigeration pipes or components are installed in a location where they are unlikely to be exposed to any substance that may corrode components containing refrigerant unless such components are made from materials that are inherently resistant to corrosion or suitably protected against corrosion.

    9. Checking electrical devices
Repair and maintenance of electrical components must include initial safety checks and component inspection procedures. If there is a fault that could compromise the safety, no power supply is to must be connected to the circuit until the matter has been rectified. If the fault cannot be corrected immediately but the continuing operation is necessary, an adequate temporary solution must be employed. This must be reported to the owner of the equipment so that all parties are advised. Initial safety checks must include: Discharge of capacitors: this must be done safely manner to prevent sparking; Ensuring that no live electrical components or wiring are exposed while charging, recovering or purging the system; That there is continuity of earth bonding.

  • Repairs to sealed components

    1. When repairing sealed components, all power supplies must be disconnected from the equipment being worked on prior to removal of any sealed covers, etc. If it is absolutely necessary to maintain a power supply to equipment during servicing, a permanently operating form of leak detection must be located at the most critical point so as to provide prior warning of any potentially hazardous situation.
    2. Particular attention must be paid to the following so as to ensure that working on electrical components does not result in alteration of the casing in such a way that the level of protection is affected. This must include damage to cables, excessive numbers of connections, terminals not made to the original specification, damage to seals, incorrect fitting of glands, etc.
Ensure that the apparatus is mounted securely. Ensure that seals or sealants have not degraded such that they no longer prevent the ingress of flammable atmospheres. Replacement parts must be in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.
NOTE: The use of silicon sealant may inhibit the effectiveness of some types of leak detection equipment. Intrinsically safe components do not have to be isolated prior to working on them.
  • Repairing intrinsically safe components
Do not apply any permanent inductive or capacitance loads to the circuit without ensuring that this will not exceed the permissible voltage and current permitted for the equipment in use. Intrinsically safe components are the only types that can be worked on while live in the presence of a flammable atmosphere. The test apparatus must be at the correct rating. Components must only be replaced with parts specified by the manufacturer. Other parts may result in the ignition of leaked refrigerant in the atmosphere.

  • Cabling
Check that cabling will not be subject to wear, corrosion, excessive pressure, vibration, sharp edges or any other adverse environmental impact. The check must also take into account the effects of ageing or constant vibration from sources such as compressors or fans.

  • Detection of flammable refrigerants
Under no circumstances should potential sources of ignition be used when searching for or detecting refrigerant leaks. Halide torches (or any other detectors that use naked flames) must not be used.

  • Leak detection methods
The following leak detection methods are deemed acceptable for systems containing flammable refrigerants. Electronic leak detectors may be used to detect flammable refrigerants, but their sensitivity may be inadequate or they may need re-calibration. (Detection equipment must be calibrated a refrigerant-free area.) Ensure that the detector is not a potential source of ignition and is suitable for the refrigerant used. Leak detection equipment must be set at a percentage
of the LFL of the refrigerant and must be calibrated to the refrigerant used, and the appropriate percentage of gas (25% maximum) must be confirmed. Leak detection fluids are suitable for use with most refrigerants, but detergents containing chlorine must be avoided as the chlorine may react with the refrigerant and corrode the copper pipework. All naked flames must be removed/extinguished if a leak is suspected. If a refrigerant leak is found that requires brazing, all the refrigerant must be recovered from the system or isolated (by means of shut-off valves) in a part of the system not affected by the leak. Oxygen-free nitrogen (OFN) must then be passed through the system both before and during the brazing process.

  • Removal and evacuation
Conventional procedures must be used when accessing the refrigerant circuit for repairs or any other purpose. However, it is important to ensure that best practice is followed as flammability must be considered. The following procedure must be adhered to: Remove the refrigerant; Purge the circuit with inert gas; Evacuate the circuit; Purge again with inert gas; Open the circuit by means of cutting or brazing.
The refrigerant charge must be recovered to the correct recovery cylinders. The system must be flushed with OFN to render the unit safe. This process may need to be repeated several times. Compressed air or oxygen must not be used for this task. Flushing must take place by breaking the vacuum in the system using OFN and continuing to fill until the working pressure is achieved, then venting to the atmosphere, and finally reducing the pressure to vacuum pressure. This process must be repeated until there is no refrigerant left in the system. When the final OFN charge is used, the system must be vented to atmospheric pressure to enable work to take place. This operation is absolutely vital if brazing operations are to take place on the pipework.
Ensure that the socket for the vacuum pump is not close to any ignition sources and that ventilation is available.

  • Charging procedures
Besides conventional charging procedures, the following requirements must be met. Ensure that there is no contamination of different refrigerants when using charging equipment. Hoses or lines must be as short as possible so as to minimize the amount of refrigerant inside them. Cylinders must be kept upright. Ensure that the refrigeration system is earthed prior to charging the system with refrigerant. Label the system when charging is complete (unless it is already labelled). Extreme care must be taken not to overfill the refrigeration system.
The system must be pressure-tested using OFN prior to recharging. The system must be tested for leaks on completion of charging but prior to commissioning. A follow-up leak test must be carried out prior to leaving the site.

  • Decommissioning
Before carrying out this procedure, it is essential for the technician to be completely familiar with the equipment and all its details. Ensuring that all refrigerants are recovered safely is recommended good practice. Prior to the task being carried out, oil and refrigerant samples must be taken in case analysis is required prior to reuse of reclaimed refrigerant. It is essential to ensure that electricity is available before starting the task.
    a) Familiarise yourself with the equipment and its operation.
    b) Isolate the system electrically.
    c) Before attempting the procedure, ensure that:
Mechanical equipment is available, if required, for handling refrigerant cylinders; All personal protective equipment is available and being used correctly; The recovery process is supervised by a competent person at all times; Recovery equipment and cylinders are compliant with the appropriate standards.
    d) Pump down the refrigerant system, if possible.
    e) If a vacuum is not possible, create a manifold so that refrigerant can be removed from various parts of the system.
    f) Make sure the cylinder is placed on the scales before recovery takes place.
    g) Start the recovery machine and operate it in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
    h) Do not overfill cylinders (no more than 80% liquid charge by volume).
    i) Do not exceed the maximum working pressure of the cylinder, even temporarily.
    j) When the cylinders have been filled correctly and the process completed, make sure that the cylinders and equipment are removed from the site promptly and that all isolation valves on the equipment are closed off.
    k) Recovered refrigerant must not be charged into another refrigeration system unless it has been cleaned and checked.

  • Labelling
Equipment must be labelled, stating that it has been de-commissioned and emptied of refrigerant. The label must be dated and signed. Ensure that there are labels on the equipment stating that the equipment contains flammable refrigerant.

  • Recovery
When removing refrigerant from a system for either servicing or decommissioning, ensuring that all refrigerants are removed safely is recommended good practice.
When transferring refrigerant into cylinders, ensure that only appropriate refrigerant recovery cylinders are used. Ensure that the correct number of cylinders is available for holding the total system charge. All cylinders to be used must be designated for the recovered refrigerant and labelled for that refrigerant (i.e. special cylinders for the recovery of refrigerant). Cylinders must be complete with pressure relief valves and associated shut-off valves in good working order. Empty recovery cylinders are evacuated and, if possible, cooled before recovery occurs.
The recovery equipment must be in good working order, with instructions relating to the equipment being used, and it must be suitable for recovery of flammable refrigerants. A set of calibrated weighing scales must also be available and in good working order. Hoses must come complete with leak-free disconnect couplings and be in good condition. Before using the recovery machine, check that it is in satisfactory working order and has been maintained properly, and that any associated electrical components are sealed to prevent ignition in the event of refrigerant release. If in doubt, consult the manufacturer.
The recovered refrigerant must be returned to the refrigerant supplier in the correct recovery cylinder, and the relevant Waste Transfer Note must be arranged. Do not mix refrigerants in recovery units, and particularly not in cylinders. If compressors or compressor oils are to be removed, ensure that they have been evacuated to an acceptable level so as to ensure that flammable refrigerant does not remain within the lubricant. The evacuation process must be carried out prior to returning the compressor to the supplier. Only electric heating to the compressor body is to be used in order to accelerate this process. Oil must be drained from systems safely.

However, the fan motor will continue to operate – this is normal. Carefully move the unit to a drainage location, remove the bottom drain plug and let the water drain away. Refit the bottom drain plug and restart the machine until the “P1” symbol disappears. If the error recurs, book a service. NOTE: Be sure to refit the bottom drain plug firmly before using the unit so as to prevent leaks.

MAINTENANCE

WARNING!

  • Always unplug the unit before cleaning or servicing it.
  • DO NOT use flammable liquids or chemicals to clean the unit.
  • DO NOT wash the unit under running water. Doing so presents an electrical hazard.
  • DO NOT operate the machine if the power supply is damaged during cleaning. The power cable must be replaced with a new cable from the manufacturer if it is damaged.
  • DO NOT operate the unit without a filter as dirt and lint will clog the appliance and may damage it.

CAUTION

Maintenance tips

  • Be sure to clean the air filter every 2 weeks for optimum performance.
  • The water collection tray should be drained immediately after a P1 error and before storage so as to prevent mould.
  • In households with animals, the grille will have to be wiped down periodically to prevent blockage ofthe airflow due to animal hair.

Cleaning the unit
Clean the unit using a damp, lint-free cloth and a mild
detergent. Dry the unit using a dry, lint-free cloth. STORE

THE UNIT WHEN NOT IN USE.

  • Drain the unit’s water collection tray as described in the instructions in the following section.
  • Run the appliance on FAN mode for 12 hours in a warm room to dry it and prevent mould.
  • Turn off the appliance and unplug it.
  • Clean the air filters as described in the instructions in the previous section. Reinstall the clean, dry filter before storing the unit.
  • Remove the batteries from the remote control.
  • Be sure to store the unit in a cool, dark place. Exposure to direct sunlight or extreme heat may reduce the lifespan of your unit.
  • NOTE: The cabinet and front may be dusted using an oil-free cloth or washed with a cloth damped in a solution of warm water and a mild washing-up liquid. Rinse thoroughly and wipe dry. Never use harsh cleaners, wax or polish on the front of the cabinet. Be sure to wring excess water from the cloth before wiping around the controls. Excess water in or around the controls may cause damage to the unit.

  2. Set your preferred temperature using the Temp or Temp button.
  3. Press the FAN button to select the fan speed: AUTO, LOW, MED or HIGH.
  4. Press the ON/OFF button to start the unit.

DRY operation (dehumidifying)

  1. Press the MODE button to select DRY mode.
  2. Set your preferred temperature using the Temp or Temp button.
  3. Press the ON/OFF button to start the unit.

FAN operation

  1. Press the MODE button to select FAN mode.
  2. Press the FAN button to select the fan speed: AUTO, LOW, MED, or HIGH.
  3. Press the ON/OFF button to start the unit.
NOTE: The temperature cannot be set in FAN mode. This is why the LCD screen on your remote control will not display temperature.

SETTING THE TIMER FUNCTION

Your air conditioning unit has two timer-related functions:

  • TIMER ON — sets the amount of time after which the unit will turn on automatically.
  • TIMER OFF — sets the amount of time after which the unit will turn off automatically.

TIMER ON function
The TIMER ON function allows you to set a period of time after which the unit will turn on automatically, such as when you come home from work.

  1. Press the TIMER ON button. By default, the last time period that you set and an “h” (indicating hours) will appear in the display.
Note: This number indicates the number of hours after the current time at which you want the unit to turn on. For example, if you set TIMER ON for 2 hours, “2.0h” will appear on the screen and the unit will turn on after 2 hours.

  2.  Press the TIMER ON button repeatedly to set the time when you want the unit to turn on.

  3. Wait 2 seconds, then the TIMER ON function will be activated. The digital display on your remote control will then return to the temperature display.

Example: Setting the unit to turn on after 2.5 hours.

TIMER OFF function
The TIMER OFF function allows you to set a period of time after which the unit will turn off automatically, such as when you wake up.

  1. Press the TIMER OFF button. By default, the last time period that you set and an “h” (indicating hours) will appear in the display.
Note: This number indicates the number of hours after the current time at which you want the unit to turn off. For example, if you set TIMER OFF for 2 hours, “2.0h” will appear on the screen and the unit will turn off after 2 hours.

  2. Press the TIMER OFF button repeatedly to set the time when you want the unit to turn off.

  3. Wait 2 seconds, then the TIMER OFF function will be activated. The digital display on your remote control will then return to the temperature display.

Setting both TIMER ON and TIMER OFF at the same time
Bear in mind that the time periods you set for both functions refer to hours after the current time. For example, let us assume that the current time is 1:00pm and you want the unit to turn on automatically at 7:00pm. You want it to operate for 2 hours, then turn off automatically at 9:00 pm.
Proceed as follows:

NOTE: When setting the TIMER ON or TIMER OFF functions, up to 10 hours, the time will increase in 30-minute increments with each press. It will increase in 1-hour increments after 10 hours and up to 24 hours. The timer will revert to zero after 24 hours. You can disable either function by setting the timer to “0.0h”. FOLLOW ME function
The FOLLOW ME function allows
the remote control to measure the temperature at its current location. When using the AUTO or COOL function, measuring the ambient temperature from the remote control (instead of from the indoor unit itself) will allow the air conditioner to optimise the temperature around you and ensure maximum comfort.

  1. Press the FOLLOW ME button to enable this function. The remote control will send a temperature signal to the unit every three minutes.
  2. Press the FOLLOW ME button again to disable this function.

NOTE:

  • The button designs are based on a typical model and may be slightly different to the actual model you purchased. The design of the buttons on your device takes precedence.

  • All the functions described are executed by the unit. If the unit does not have a feature installed, nothing will happen when you press the relevant button on the remote control.

  • If there are discrepancies between “Remote control illustration” and the User Manual, the User Manual description will take precedence.

  • The device should comply with local and national regulations. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.

  • This equipment has been tested and found to be compliant with relevant EMC limits. These
limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and may radiate radio frequency energy and may cause harmful interference to radio communications unless it is installed and used in accordance with the instructions. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception –which can be determined by turning the equipment off and back on – the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by means of one or more of the following measures:

    • Realign or relocate the receiving antenna.
    • Increase the distance between the equipment and the receiver.
    • Connect the equipment to a socket on a circuit that is different to the one to which the receiver is connected.
    • Consult your dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help. Changes or modifications not approved by the party responsible for compliance could void the user’s authority to operate the equipment.
