Safety Instructions
If these safety instructions are not observed, there is a risk of serious injury or even death!
- Work on the battery should only be made by qualified service staff only
- The battery connections are always under-voltage. Never place tools or objects on the battery. Avoid short circuits, deep discharges or excessive charging currents
- Only use insulated tools when working on the battery
- In case of fire, use a class D fire extinguisher, foam, or CO2 fire extinguisher
- If a battery is discharged too deeply, it is damaged and can become dangerous. Avoid a deep discharge by silent consumers by installing a safety relay or an isolating switch
- Never try to open the battery. The securely packed electrolyte of the cells is corrosive. If the battery casing is damaged, dispose of the battery according to the instructions
- If a battery is recharged after a deep discharge or over-charge, a harmful gas mixture such as phosphate may be secreted in the cells. Never open the battery. If the battery casing is damaged, dispose of the battery according to the regulations
- LiFePO4 batteries are lighter than conventional lead-acid or gel batteries, but if they are not properly secured they can still become a projectile in an accident
Transport Information
The battery is tested according to the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part
III, subsection 38.3 (ST/SG/AC.10/11/version 5). For transport, the batteries
belong to category UN3480, Class 9, packing group II and during transport,
these regulations must be complied with.
This means that for transport by land or sea (ADR, RID & IMDG) they must be
packed according to packing instruction P903 and for air transport (IATA)
according to Packaging Instructions P965.
The original packaging meets these requirements.
Battery Management System (BMS)
- Overload protection
- Deep discharge protection
- Overvoltage protection
- Active cell balancing
- Charge control
- Temperature protection of the cells
- Temperature protection of the BMS
- Short circuit protection
Overload Protection
The BMS switches off the battery outputs in case of overload to protect the
cells.
The battery has no voltage at this time, after the consumer is finished the
battery unlocks itself.
Deep Discharge Protection
Each cell is individually monitored for deep discharge. If this results in the
battery outputs being switched off, they can only be released again by a
charging process.
The BMS protects the cells from deep discharge during active use. However, a
switched-off, the empty battery can damage itself over a longer period of time
due to the low but existing self-discharge of 3% / month!
Even small consumers such as alarm systems, relays, stand-by systems or
similar consume capacity and discharge your battery. If the battery is not
used for a long time, make sure that it is disconnected from the system by
disconnecting the plus pole.
Tip: A battery that has been completely discharged should be charged as
soon as possible!
Overvoltage Protection
LiFePO4 battery cells must not be charged above 3.65V/cell and 12.8V/battery,
otherwise the cells will be destroyed by overvoltage.
Only suitable chargers with an end-of-charge voltage of 12.8V may be used to
charge the batteries.
The BMS protects the cell against overcharging, but must itself take the power
and burn. This is possible for a short time, but not a permanent state.
A permanently too high charging voltage above 12.8V can damage the BMS!
Active Cell Balancing
The so-called balancing ensures that each individual cell is charged to the
maximum final charge voltage of 3.6V/cell. This is important when the battery
capacity is maximally re-moved. If the cells are completely empty, they can
drive a little and become uneven.
As a result, the battery would have less and less capacity over time. The
built-in active balancer, which adjusts the cells at any time, can help here.
The active balancer ensures maxi-mum efficiency regardless of the battery‘s
state of charge.
Charge Control
The BMS controls all parameters of a reliable and safe load at all times. If problems appear, the charge is blocked by switching off the battery outputs to protect the battery.
Temperature Protection of the Cells
All LiFePO4 cells in the battery are individually controlled by a temperature
sensor at all times.
If the battery switches off because the cells have reached temperatures above
70 °C, they must first cool down again until the BMS releases the output
again.
Do not draw power or charge the battery for 30 minutes!
Temperature Protection of the BMS
The BMS itself is also permanently monitored by a temperature sensor. If the
BMS reaches a temperature of 95 °C, the battery outputs are switched off.
Only after cooling down can the output be released again.
Do not draw power or charge the battery for 30 minutes!
Short Circuit Protection
In case of a short circuit, our BMS protects the battery from destruction and
switches off the battery outputs.
When the short-circuit is removed, the battery is automatically switched on
again, unless the temperature protection is active.
Do not draw power or charge the battery for 30 minutes!
Installation
Never use a damaged battery!
Pay attention to the correct polarity when connecting!
Mounting
Ensure that the battery is adequately secured with a retaining strap or
mounting bracket. The LiFePO4 battery can be mounted in any position unless
specifically specified.
Connection The battery has M8 connection poles (internal thread) for
screws or can be optionally converted to automotive SAE cones.
Already use a backup in your system, it must be adapted to the performance of
the battery!
Parallel Connection
Any number of MAGIRA® batteries of the same brand, type, age, capacity, and state of charge can be connected in parallel to increase the capacity.
- Make absolutely sure that the connection is correct: Ensure an even load distribution!
- Each individual battery must be fully charged before the first installation!
Serial Connection
A maximum of 4 batteries (48V) of the same brand, type, age, capacity, and state of charge can be connected in parallel in series to increase the output voltage.
- Make absolutely sure that the connection is correct: to Ensure an even load distribution!
- Each individual battery must be fully charged before the first installation!
Charging
ATTENTION
- Only use chargers suitable for LiFePO4 cells with a final charge voltage according to the MAGIRA® battery datasheet!
- Even simple lead, gel, acid, and AGM battery chargers can damage the battery when first connected!
- Observe the maximum charging current of your battery, this must not be exceeded at any time!
- Stop the charging process when the BMS interrupts the charging process and check the battery and the charging parameters!
- Disconnect the charger if it is not used for a longer period of time!
- Only use LiFePO4 chargers approved or released by MAGIRA® to ensure the service life of your battery!
- Charge your battery as quickly as possible at a low state of charge of approx. 20% or after disconnection due to under-voltage to ensure maximum service life!
- Charge your battery before use!
At delivery, MAGIRA® batteries are charged between approx. 40% and 80%.
We therefore always recommend that a new battery be fully charged before use.
Please observe our instructions for parallel or serial connections of the
batteries!
Charging at Low Temperatures
Even charging at low temperatures is controlled by our BMS. The normal charging range is from 0 °C to +60 °C. Here the battery takes up the complete charging current. If the temperature is outside this range, the charging current is reduced so that the battery can either slowly warm-up or cool down. The charging process is thus extended.
Review
- Check your connection cables and contacts regularly for tightness, deformation, cracks or damage!
- Check the battery housing for damage. A damaged battery is not allowed to be charged and must be checked by MAGIRA®!
- If the running or charging time changes very much in relation to the original condition, the battery should be checked or replaced due to the operating age!
- The self-discharge of the battery is very low (1-3%/month) when the battery is not in use and is stored
- Consider replacing the battery with a new one if any of the following occurs:
- Battery life drops to less than 80% of the original runtime
- The charging time of the battery increases considerably
Cleaning
If cleaning is necessary, use a soft damp cloth without chemical additives! Otherwise, the dust- and waterproof housing is maintenance-free.
Storage/Wintering
Extend the life of your battery by following these instructions:
- Charge your battery to 100% of its capacity before storage
- Disconnect your battery from all loads and consumers before storing
- Protect the pole contacts against short circuits by covers
- If the battery is stored for a longer period of time, it must be recharged to 100% every year!
- Temperatures down to –20 °C do not damage the battery cell, so in most cases, it is not necessary to remove the battery. In general, care should be taken to ensure that very cold batteries are slowly adapted to the ambient temperature again! Rapid heating can lead to condensation inside the housing and damage the battery
- Never use a trickle charger!
