Setup

Location tips

  • Select a stable, level base.
  • Make sure that the environment is clean and free from dust.
  • Avoid placing the unit close to sources of heat or in direct sunlight.
  • Do not place any heavy objects on the cables or the speakers.
  • You can fi nd special assembly materials (cords, speaker stands, wall brackets, and resonance dampers) adapted to these speakers on our webshop.
  • On parquet, varnished wood, and similar surfaces, you should stick felt gliders to the rubber feet of the subwoofer or put blankets or small carpets under them. This will prevent discoloration of the floor over the long term.

The following data refers to an “ideal home cinema”, in which the viewer or listener sits in a central position at a suffi cient distance in front of the television or screen (see graphic to the right) and no objects (tables or the like) are located in between. Unfortunately, the room, furnishings, or other circumstances do not always allow for optimum arrangement.
Modern AV receivers offer many ways to compensate for any defi ciencies in placement. The following general rule applies: You can always experiment with what works best in our listening room in terms of sound and appearance based on our recommendations. Let your ears (and eyes) decide!Teufel System 4 5 1
Home Cinema Speaker Set - figure 2

Center speaker

  • Place one of the three front speakers ② directly under the screen in the center, ideally on an arc curved slightly towards the screen.

Front speakers

  • The two remaining front speakers ② are set up to the right and left of the screen.
  • They should be at approximately the same height as the center speaker and as far as possible should form an equilateral triangle with the listener – known as the stereo triangle (distance to listener = distance between the speakers).
  • The speakers should project sound directly into the room or slightly towards the listener.

Subwoofer

  • The location of the subwoofer can be freely selected and does not influence the other speakers. However, do not place it in the corner of the room as this may result in irregular frequency overloads. A location between the front speakers is often ideal.

Dipole rear speakers
There are two possible arrangements for these speakers:Teufel System 4 5 1
Home Cinema Speaker Set - figure 3

Normally, the dipole rear speakers are set up or hung up at head height (140 to 210 cm) to the side of the listener. The rear speakers emit sound both to the front and back. The
distance to the rear wall should be no less than 10 cm.

The second arrangement possibility is suitable for narrow rooms. In this case, the rear speakers are placed at a height of 140 to 210 cm behind the listener and situated t a 45-degree angle. This will cause the speakers to emit sound towards the walls and generate the desired diffuse effect. The distance to the walls should not be less than 10 cm in this case.

Wall mounting
If you choose to mount your speakers on the wall, please note the following:
Attention Risk of damage!
Unsuitable fi xing may cause damage.

  • If mounting the speakers on the wall, make sure that the job is carried out by a professional.

  • Before drilling the holes using a metal detector to ensure that there are no electrical or plumbing runs in the wall within the drilling area.

  • Use only suitable screws and wall plugs for fi xing.
Verify the carrying capacity of the walls.

  • Hang the speakers on the wall using the keyhole slot(s) on the speaker back side and the previously mounted screw(s).

Teufel System 4 5 1 Home Cinema Speaker Set - figure 5

Wall bracket/speaker stand

  • The keyhole slot(s) and the threaded holes on the bottom of the speakers are also intended for fi xing the speakers to a wall bracket or speaker stand. You will find suitable items in our online shop.

Connecting

Teufel System 4 5 1 Home Cinema Speaker Set - figure 6

Danger Danger of injury/damage!
Arrange the cables so that they do not pose a trip hazard.

  • Unplug the main plug of your AV receiver from the main power supply so that it cannot be switched on by accident.

Speakers

  • Lay speaker cable from your AV receiver to each speaker. Use a high-quality double wire speaker cable with marked strands for this. The cable should have a diameter of at least 2.5 mm 2.
Little hint: label the cables at the receiver end – this will help if you ever need to disconnect and reconnect the receiver.

  • On the back of each speaker is a connection terminal with two clamps. Here you can connect the speaker cables directly or using pin plugs. Direct connection only is described here.

  • The terminals are each marked red (+) and black (–).

Make sure the polarity is correct!
Connect the like-colored terminals. Otherwise, the sound quality will suffer.
The speaker connections on your AV receiver should be similarly marked.
The strands of the speaker cables are marked with different colors or shapes.

Teufel System 4 5 1 Home Cinema Speaker Set - figure 7

  • Split the wire down by approx. 30 mm on both ends and remove approx. 10 mm of insulation each. Twist the wire so that no strands are protruding.

  • Turn the connector terminal counterclockwise until loose. Run the stripped cable end into the now visible hole. Close the terminal by turning it counterclockwise.
The cable has now been clamped in place.

  • Connect all the cables to the speakers in the same way.

  • Connect the other ends of the speaker cables to your AV receiver. You should be able to find corresponding notes in the operating instructions of your device.

Subwoofer – audio connection
The subwoofer is connected to the subwoofer output of the AV receiver using a mono cinch cable (not supplied). ![Teufel System 4 5 1 Home Cinema Speaker Set

  • figure 8](https://manuals.plus/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Teufel- System-4-5-1-Home-Cinema-Speaker-Set-figure-8-550x249.jpg)

    • The cinch jack 13 “LEFT/MONO” on the rear of the subwoofer is intended for this purpose.
    • The cinch jack 13 “RIGHT” is only used if you connect using a Y-adaptor. This increases the subwoofer level slightly.
You will find more information in the operating instructions for your receiver.

Subwoofer –mains power connection

Teufel System 4 5 1 Home Cinema Speaker Set - figure 9

  • Ensure that the mains switch 4 “POWER” is set to “OFF”.
  • Turn the subwoofer’s volume to approx. one-third using the volume control 1 “VOLUME”.
  • Using power cord ④, connect the mains connection jack 6 to a mains power socket.
  • Also, plug your AV receiver back into the mains power supply.

  • Use mains switch 4 “Power” to switch the main power supply on or off. When the subwoofer is activated, the power LED 12 “Power” is green. If the subwoofer is in standby, it is red.

Automatic activation/deactivation

Use switch 9 “ON/AUTO” to change the operating condition:
ON The subwoofer is permanently switched on.
AUTO The subwoofer switches itself on as soon as a signal is present at input 13. If there is no audio signal for 20 minutes then the subwoofer switches to standby. If the automatic power switching is not functioning correctly you can use control 11 to increase (turn to the right) or decrease (turn to the left) its sensitivity. You will need a small screwdriver to do this.

Adjusting the AV receiver and subwoofer
Most AV receivers have a menu with settings for the speakers (called “Speaker Setup” or similar).

AV receiver settings

  • Subwoofer to “On”.
  • Set the subwoofer crossover frequency to 80 Hz.
  • Subwoofer volume to more than 75 %.

Subwoofer settings
When using this speaker setTeufel System 4 5 1 Home Cinema Speaker Set -
figure 13

  • Switch 9 “ON/AUTO” to “AUTO”.
  • Switch 8 “MODE” to “THX”.
  • Volume control 1 “VOLUME” to the middle setting (“THX”).

With these settings the subwoofer use is ideal and it will behave according to THX specifi cations. You can carry out the final fine tuning later on your AV receiver.
When connecting other speaker sets (e.g. THX Select 2 or Ultra 2)

Teufel System 4 5 1 Home Cinema Speaker Set - figure
14

  • Set the switch 8 “MODE” to “USER”. This activates controls 2 “HIGH-PASS” and 3 “LOW-PASS”.

  • Set the crossover frequency to approx. 80 Hz with control 3 “LOW-PASS”. This determines that the subwoofer only emits sounds up to this frequency.

  • Set control 2 “HIGH-PASS” to “20 Hz”. This determines that the subwoofer only emits sounds above this frequency.

  • Set the volume control 1 “VOLUME” to the middle setting.

  • Now carry out a sound check and adjust the volume control 1 “VOLUME” until the subwoofer is “easily heard” and control 3 “LOW-PASS” until the low tones sound strong but do not buzz.
If any deep “hits” are too hard increase the setting on control 2 “HIGH-PASS”.

  • Once you have found the best sound in this way adjust the switch 7 “PHASE” in both directions a number of times. If you notice a considerable improvement in sound quality, refine the settings until optimal. Otherwise, leave the switch set to “0°”.

  • Repeat these steps with different CDs and DVDs.

Care and cleaning

Clean the subwoofer and satellite speakers regularly with a soft, slightly damp microfi tablecloth. Please be absolutely sure to observe the following notes in the process:

Danger Risk of electric shock!
In contact with live parts, water can lead to electric shock or short circuits.

  • Disconnect the mains plug before cleaning.
  • Make sure that no liquid penetrates the unit.

Attention Risk of damage!
Using the wrong cleaning materials may damage the delicate surface of the case.

  • If possible, only use plain water without any additives.
  • In case of stubborn marks, a mild soap solution may be used.
  • In no circumstances should caustic cleaning products, white spirit, thinners, petrol or similar be used for cleaning.

Troubleshooting

The following advice should help you to solve problems. If this does not help, you will fi nd useful information in the detailed FAQs on our website. Otherwise, please contact our hotline (see page 3). Take note of the warranty instructions.

Problem Possible cause Solution
The subwoofer isn’t working. The subwoofer is off or doesn’t have any power.

Switch on switches 4 and 9 (“On”). Check the power cord and socket.
The overload protection has been triggered and the indicator lamp 10 “CLIP” is illuminated in red.| Allow the unit to cool down and reduce the level slightly using control 1 “VOLUME”.
| Disconnect the power cord.
Carefully pull the fuse holder out of the mains connection.| Teufel System 4
5 1 Home Cinema Speaker Set - figure 16Push the old fuse down and out. Insert a new fuse (T 1.6 A, 250 V) and push the holder back in.
The volume has been set too low.| Increase the volume using control 1.
The subwoofer hums.| The subwoofer is connected to a different power circuit from the rest of the system.| Connect the subwoofer and AV receiver to the same power circuit.
The buzzing is caused by problems with the power supply.| Purchase a line filter and connect both units to it.
The buzzing is caused by multiple sockets.| Use another multi-outlet power strip or connect the subwoofer directly to the wall socket. It may also help to insert the power plug the other way around.
Playback is noisy.| Generally speaking, System 4 is very low noise. In the high range area, very high-resolution speaker systems can expose the poor quality of a signal source (e.g. from MP3 files).| Make sure that the source is emitting a clear signal.
The sound seems flat.| Satellites have been connected with the poles reversed.| Check that the speaker cable on all satellites is correctly connected.

Important information in accordance with the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (Germany: ElektroG)
We advise owners of electrical and electronic appliances that old electrical and electronic devices must be handed n separately from municipal waste, in accordance with the applicable regulations. Batteries and rechargeable batteries that are not firmly enclosed in old electrical devices and lamps, and that can be removed from the old device without destroying them, must be separated from them in a non-destructive manner before they are handed to the collection point for their intended disposal. Please take note of our information on the Batteries Act [Germany: BattG] below for disposing of batteries.
You make an important contribution to returning, recycling, and further processing old devices if you separate your old devices into the correct collection groups for recycling. The symbol below of a crossed-out dustbin, applied  to electrical and electronic appliances, also advises of the duty to separate collections:

Consumer electronics stores and supermarkets are obliged, under certain conditions, to take back old electrical and electronic devices, in accordance with section 17 of the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act. Stationary retailers must take back an old electrical device of the same type when a new electrical device is bought (1:1 return). This also applies to home deliveries. These retailers must also take back up to three small old electrical devices (.4 25cm) without this being linked to a new purchase (0:1 return).
In accordance with the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act, as online retailers of electrical devices and due to our product range, our obligation is limited to 1:1 return of large devices of > 50 cm when selling a new electrical or electronic device of the same type. We comply with the obligation to returning devices other than large devices through our service provider. You can find the exact contact data and collection points on our website www.Teufel.de/entsorgung. It is also possible to return old electrical and electronic appliances free of charge at an official delivery point run by the public waste disposal authorities.
