Panasonic SB40 Beard Trimmer for Men Cordless
Introduction
The Panasonic Beard Trimmer for Men ER-SB40-K rapidly and gently trims hair, moustaches, and beards thanks to its high-performance linear hair machine motor that produces 9,800 cuts per minute. The ER-SB40-K men’s facial trimmer offers an improved cutting edge with ultra-sharp stainless-steel, hypoallergenic wide tip blades to help lift, capture, and cut neatly through even the most unruly hair, including whiskers that lie flat on the skin. It also has 19 adjustable clipper and trimmer settings. The cordless trimmer is rechargeable and may be used cordlessly for up to 60 minutes or plugged into any standard AC outlet for more time. The Panasonic beard and hair trimmer for men is completely machine washable and cleans up quickly when submerged in water.
For the greatest beard trimmer performance, the blade should be changed when it becomes dull, just like with all Panasonic wet/dry shavers and beard and hair trimmers for men. For international travel, the Panasonic ER-SB40-K comes with a comb attachment, cleaning brush, blade oil, AC adapter/charger, and universal voltage (AC 100-240V).
INTENDED USE
- Be sure to mount the attachment after each use. Otherwise, infants may remove the blade and accidentally swallow it, or the blade may be deformed.
- Apply the oil to the blade before and after each use. (See page 14.)
- Failure to apply the oil may cause the following problems.
- The appliance may become blunt.
- Shorter operating time.
- Louder sound.
- The appliance may become warm during operation and/or charging. This is normal.
- Clean the housing only with a soft cloth slightly dampened with tap water or soapy tap water. Do not use thinner, benzine, alcohol or other chemicals.
- Before using an attachment, check that it has been installed correctly. Failure to do so may cause hair to be cut too short. Store the appliance in a place with low humidity after use.
- The appliance should not be used on animals.
- The following symbol indicates that a specific detachable power supply unit is required for connecting the electrical appliance to the supply mains. The type reference of power supply unit is marked near the symbol.

Turn the appliance off.
- Connect the appliance plug to the appliance socket.
- Plug in the adaptor into a household outlet.
- Check that the charge status lamp glows.
- Charging is completed after approx. 1 hour.
Disconnect the adaptor when the charge status lamp stops glowing.
(for safety and to reduce energy usage)
- If you remove and reinsert the appliance plug while charging, the charge status lamp glows and turns off after approximately 5 seconds.
NOTES
- To keep charging the battery will not affect battery performance.
- If there is noise from the radio or other sources while using or charging the product, move to a different location to use the product.
- When the appliance is not used for 6 months or more, the battery will weaken (leak battery fluid, etc.). Fully charge the battery once every 6 months.
- You can charge the battery before it is completely discharged. However, it is recommended to charge when the battery is completely discharged. The battery life depends strongly on factors such as how it is used and stored.
Recommended ambient temperature for charging is 0 – 35 °C (32 – 95 °F). Battery performance may decrease or charging time changes under extremely low or high temperatures.
- A full charge supplies enough power for approximately 50 minutes of use. (Based on dry using at 20 – 30 °C (68 – 86 °F).)
The operating time may differ depending on the frequency of use.
- When charging the appliance for the first time or when it has not been in use for more than 6 months, the charging time may change or the charge status lamp may not glow for a few minutes or the operating time may shorten. Please charge it for more than 8 hours in such cases.
AC OPERATION
If you connect the AC adaptor to the appliance in the same way as for charging, and turn on the power, you can use it.
- The battery will be discharged, even with the AC operation.
- If the remaining battery is too low, the blades may move slowly or stop, even with the AC operation. In this case, charge the battery for 1 minute or more.
HOW TO USE
- Turn the appliance off.
- Apply the oil to the blade before and after each use. (See page 14.)
- Do not use with shaving foam applied or when the beard is wet. A wet beard may stick to the skin or bunch up, making it difficult to trim.
- Before trimming, comb your moustache with a comb.
- The appliance may not operate in an ambient temperature lower than approximately 0 °C (32 °F).
- Mount the desired attachment and adjust the trimming height as needed. (See page 11.)
- It can also be used without the attachment. (Trimming height: approx. 0.5 mm (1/64˝))
- Press the power switch to turn on the power.
REMOVING AND MOUNTING THE ATTACHMENTS
Take care not to injure hands, etc., with the blade when removing or mounting the attachment.
- Mounting the attachment Mount the attachment to the main body until it clicks. If the attachment is not attached correctly, it may shift and end up cutting too much during use.
- Removing the attachment Hold the main body securely and remove the attachment from the main body.
COMB ATTACHMENT
- Actual hair length will be a little longer than the height you set.
Setting of 10.5 mm (27/64˝ ) or 20.5 mm (13/16˝ ) is unavailable.
- Hair trimmings may collect inside the attachment when a large volume of beard is cut, so discard hair trimmings after each use.

Frequently Asked Questions
When I go to the barber, I ask for a 3.5. does that mean 3.5mm? or is 3.5 different with this trimmer compared to a barber 3.5?****
The maximum length for this is 10mm, which equals a “3”. The 3-1/2 is the guard size. Standard Wahl sizes are labelled 1 (1/8″ = 3mm), 2 (1/4″ = 6mm), 3 (3/8″ = 10mm), 4 (1/2″ = 13mm), etc. So a 3-1/2 should be 11mm or 12mm. At the barber shop, they may have a 3-1/2, or they may use a comb to add additional length in addition to the guard. Yes, one inch (1″) is 25.4mm so there is some rounding in how the Wahl guards are labelled.
Does this require oil?****
Yes, you need to apply the oil to the trimmer before and after each use for lubrication. Part number for it is WER203X7910. You can find it here: panasonic.encompass.com/item/10387510/Panasonic/WER203X7910.
Hello – I am interested in getting longer comb attachments for this trimmer. Does anyone know where to get it?****
This is not a professional trainer. I doubt such attachments exist for this device.
How are the trimming guards they look flimsy?****
The guard on my Panasonic trimmer broke after less than a year of use. I now have to hold it on with my fingers, BECAUSE THE PART IS NOT AVAILABLE!
Does this have the guards to get a “2 day stubble” look or bigger guards to have a longer beard?****
Yes, the guards are built in, you just turn the daily to increase or decrease the guard size. No more list guards both my son who likes the 2-3 day stubble look and my husband who goes for a mid-length goatee, love this shaver.
Does the LED charge indicator displays the level of available battery power when trimmer used cordlessly?****
Yes but it’s not very granular. It’s like high, medium, low kind of display. Don’t get me wrong.. I love this trimmer. You’ll never regret the investment for sure. Best I’ve ever owned!
Does it work for shaving head****
Yes shaving head.
Why do u have to oil it before you use it?****
I boil mine before and after only because you use water to clean the blades it keeps the blades lubricated for an excellent cut.
How close is the shave for the head. If I like my cut almost smooth, would this do it?****
The body-trimmer guard yields a nearly smooth shave, I prefer the #1 guard (1/8”), which leaves a shadow of hair. I really like this product.
How is this different than the older ER-GB40-S model?****
This is the improved version of the older model. For a better comparison you can check the owner’s manual for ER-GB40: http://help.panasonic.ca/PCS/OperatingInstructions/ERGB40S.pdf and for ER- GB42 : http://help.panasonic.ca/viewing/ALL/ER- GB42/OI/ER9700GB421551/ER9700GB421551.pdf by accessing these links.
How good is this for shaping eye brows and cleaning the gap between them ?****
The trimming pop up blade works well for in between brows. It should work well for most simple trimming as well. If you want to trim the whole brow’s hair length the regular big blade with the guard set at the length you prefer would work very well and cut length evenly. If you are doing very fine shaping of the brow around the edges you may need a smaller trimmer for that very precise shaping.
Where can I find replacement blades for this trimmer in the US?****
I doubt you will, need to go to Panasonics website.
What guard/dial number for the shadow effect look on a beard? Thank you.****
Use the precision trimmer for trimming narrow areas and for detailed trimming and the comb attachment for beard.
Is it good for private parts? Does it get skin smooth with guard? Can it cut through skin without the guard attachment?****
Skin is not smooth as the guard leaves a small stubble.
what power adapter comes with it?****
US plug. 100-240v. So you will only need a small adapter if you are not in the US.
