You will also need:
- scissors
- black fineliner marker
- tape (optional)
- fabric glue (optional)
Directions
Transferring the pattern
Lay the fabric on top of the printed pattern and trace the entire pattern with
the marker. If you find it difficult to see the lines: place the fabric and
the pattern on a window and tape them to hold in place while tracing.
Remove the paper pattern, turn the fabric around and trace the pattern of just the hair to this side of the fabric.
Stretching the hoop
Center and stretch the fabric in the hoop: the side with the entire pattern is
facing up towards you. Stretch the fabric as tight as possible, and do NOT
trim off excess fabric yet!
Threading the needle (see diagram)
- Push the threader into the sharp needlepoint, from the top to the bottom of the needle.
- Open the wire loop and thread the yarn through, then pull the treader back up from the needle.
- Push the threader through the small hole in the needle point.
- Open the wire loop and thread the yarn through, then pull the threader back through the needle hole leaving a 10 cm/4-inch tail end.
Adjust needle
Step 1- Loosen the adjusting screw.
Step 2- Turn it a quarter turn and tighten the adjusting screw to the
desired needle length.
How to punch
Step 1- Unwind approximately 1 meter of yarn (do not cut the yarn!) and
thread the needle.
Step 2- Push the needle from front to back through the fabric and make
sure you push the needle up to the handle. Pull the tail end to the back of
the fabric and hold the tail while you gently pull the needle back up from the
fabric.
Step 3- Move the needle approximately 0.5 cm over and then push it into
the fabric and again gently pull the needle back up from the fabric. Repeat
step 3.
Very Important:
- the eye of the needle is always towards your previous stitches
- graze the fabric with the tip of your needle as you go to the next stitch
- the yarn tail is always loose so the yarn can move smoothly and freely through the needle
Punching the hair with a loop stitch (finished result will have flat
stitches at wrong side and loops at right side of panel)
Set the needle to position 12. Turn your hoop so the side (with only the
pattern of the hair) is facing towards you.
Thread tan yarn and start punching the hair with a basic flat stitch. The loops will be formed at the frontside/right side of your panel.
Turn the hoop again so the entire pattern is facing up towards you and so are the loops of the punched hair.
Punching the remaining part of the llama with a flat stitch (finished
result will have loops at wrong side and flat stitches at right side of the
panel)
Set the needle to position 12. Using the color chart as a reference, continue
to punch all the color sections one by one.
There are several options to fill in each color section: you can work in the
round or work in zig zag stitches. Turn your hoop again after filling in all
color sections on this side and make two more loop stitches for the llama’s
bows at either side of the head (at the bottom of the hat% pigtails).
Finishing
The frontside/right side of the finished panel shows just the hair and bows
with loop stitches and all other parts with flat stitches. Again, make sure
the panel is stretched tight before finally weaving in all tail ends and
trimming off all excess fabric. If necessary, use a dab of fabric glue to
secure excess fabric to the back of your work.
