Biohazard Sharps Containers

To be used with MFR #s 2261, 2262, 2263, 2264.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

USED WITH

These containers (# 2261 and # 2262) are designed to be used in the Prevent ® Sharps Wall Cabinet, MFR # 2263. They are also designed to be used with *Kendall®/ Covidien® 5 qt. wall cabinet (Model 8516).

MOUNT WALL CABINET

Mounting slots are located on the back side of the Prevent® Sharps Cabinet (# 2263). Mount at a level where the fill level and proper unit functioning can be clearly seen. Suggested height is 52 to 56 inches from top of cabinet to the floor. Consult your maintenance department on screw type, size, etc. Once the appropriate screw type is acquired, secure all 4 corners with screws 3/4 inch – 1 inch in length and use flat washers with the screws.

ASSEMBLE LID
(See Fig. 1)

Stand the container on a flat surface. Align the lid on the container and press down on lid to engage all locking tabs. After assembly, check to see that the cover moves freely and all locking tabs are engaged.

PLACE CONTAINER IN CABINET
(See Fig. 2)

Unlock and open cabinet door. Place assembled collector in cabinet with the FRONT facing forward. Close and lock door.

IF USED WITH A GLOVE BOX HOLDER
(See Fig. 3)

A glove box holder [# 2264] is also available that easily attaches to the bottom of the wall cabinet. To attach, first place a box of gloves in the glove box, then slide the top protruding lip of the glove box into the channel at the bottom of the cabinet. To remove glove box, gently press down on the levers and slide glove box out.

DEPOSITING OF SHARPS

To deposit used sharps, first check to make certain that all previous sharps have dropped into the container. Deposit sharp horizontally through the opening. In most cases, the weight of the sharp will cause the cover to activate, dropping the sharp into the container. The cover may also be activated by manually using the lever on the cover.

If the cover does not open completely on its own, lock the cover into place and dispose of the container properly according to local regulations.

CAUTION: DO NOT OVERFILL CONTAINER. FORCING OR OVERFILLING SHARPS INTO COLLECTOR MAY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY.

WHEN FULL

  • Collector is full when contents reach the fill line.
  • When the container is full, remove it from the cabinet or bracket by the extended handling tabs on the sides of the container. Be cautious that a sharp has not penetrated the container.
  • Container is puncture-resistant, but not puncture proof.
  • Lock the cover into place by pushing down and slightly back at the thumb slots on the cover.
  • Discard of entire container in accordance with facility guidelines, national, state and local regulations when sharps reach the fill line.

NOTICE

Contents of the Prevent® Biohazard Sharps Container can be decontaminated by autoclaving at 250°F to 270°F (121°C to 132°C). Cycles exceeding 270°F (132°C) or utilizing rapid changes in chamber pressure should be avoided. This may cause the containers to deform, which increases the chance of sharps penetrating the container walls. An appropriate cooling cycle is recommended. Allow containers to cool to room temperature before handling as warm containers are penetrated more easily. Evaluation of cycles are recommended to determine an acceptable autoclave cycle, which does not deform the biohazard sharps container. Due to the mass of the product in the container, you may need to lengthen cycles by 30%. Filled biohazard sharps containers should be placed on their side for gravity displacement if sterilized in conventional autoclave.

WARNING

  • Biohazard sharps containers should never be filled above the fill line.
  • Biohazard sharps containers that show deformation after autoclaving, or any crushing or tough handling during use, should be handled carefully as there is an increased chance of sharps penetrating the containers.
  • Autoclaved biohazard sharps containers should be cooled to room temperature before handling, as hot containers are penetrated more easily by sharps.
  • DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REOPEN OR REUSE CONTAINER.
