Turquoise Vocabulary Guide
Lapidary:
This term refers to the art of cutting, polishing, and engraving stones. A
lapidary also practices this craft, meticulously shaping raw gemstones into
breathtaking pieces of jewelry or decorative objects.
Matrix:
The matrix in gemstones like Turquoise refers to the host rock within which
the turquoise minerals have formed. It often appears as veins or patches,
contrasting with the primary color of the stone, adding uniqueness and
character to each piece.
Cabochon:
A cabochon is a gemstone polished and shaped rather than faceted. It features
a smooth, rounded top with a flat or slightly domed base, highlighting the
stone’s natural beauty and color without the distraction of cut edges.
Vein Turquoise:
This type of Turquoise is found in thin seams running through the host rock.
It is often extracted in narrow strips, displaying a beautiful contrast
between the Turquoise and the surrounding matrix.
Inlay:
A jewelry-making technique where small pieces of gemstone are precisely cut
and fitted into a metal setting, creating a smooth, mosaic-like surface.
Turquoise is commonly used for inlay work due to its vibrant color and
variations.
Stabilized Turquoise:
Due to some turquoise’s natural porosity and softness, it is sometimes treated
with a stabilizing agent to harden the stone and enhance its color. This
process makes the Turquoise more durable and suitable for jewelry making.
Spiderweb Turquoise:
A highly valued pattern in Turquoise, characterized by a web-like matrix of
thin lines that crisscross the stone. The contrast of the matrix against the
turquoise background creates a striking and sought-after appearance.
Rough:
Refers to gemstones in their natural state before any cutting, polishing, or
shaping. Rough Turquoise is often used for display or educational purposes,
showcasing the stone’s raw beauty.
Boulder Turquoise:
Also known as “Ribbon Turquoise,” it involves cutting the stone in a way that
a thin vein of turquoise runs through the host rock. This technique highlights
the contrast between the Turquoise and its matrix, creating a unique and
natural look.
Silica:
A mineral that, in silica gel, can stabilize Turquoise. It fills the stone’s
pores, hardening it and making it more resistant to wear and tear.
Mohs Hardness Scale:
A scale from 1 to 10 describes the hardness of minerals, with 1 being the
softest (talc) and 10 being the most complex (diamond). Turquoise typically
falls between 5 and 6, indicating a medium hardness.
Enhanced Turquoise:
Refers to Turquoise that has undergone a treatment process to improve its
color or durability. This can include dyeing, waxing, or impregnation with
polymers.
Chrysocolla:
A mineral often associated with Turquoise and can resemble it in appearance.
Though not as hard or valuable as Turquoise, Chrysocolla is appreciated for
its similar vibrant blue-to-green colors.
Stabilized Turquoise
Stabilized Turquoise refers to Turquoise that has been treated to enhance its
durability and color. Due to the naturally porous nature of some turquoise, it
can be prone to absorbing oils and other substances, which may alter its
appearance over time. tabilization involves impregnating the Turquoise with a
clear resin or another stabilizing agent, which fills the pores and solidifies
the stone, making it more robust and suitable for jewelry making. This
process also helps preserve the Turquoise’s vibrant blue and green hues,
ensuring they remain bright and resistant to fading. While some purists prefer
natural, untreated stones, stabilized Turquoise is widely appreciated for its
beauty, practicality, and affordability, making it a popular choice for
jewelers and consumers. The tabilization process allows for enjoying
Turquoise’s stunning appearance without worrying about wear and damage,
bridging the gap between nature’s creation and everyday wearability.
Extended Jewelry Vocabulary Guide
Bezel Setting:
A traditional and secure method of setting gemstones, where a ring of metal
(the bezel) is wrapped around the edge of the gemstone to hold it in place.
This setting highlights the stone’s beauty while protecting its edges, making
it ideal for softer stones like Turquoise.
Rope Border:
A decorative element in jewelry design resembling twisted rope frames a
gemstone or piece of jewelry. It adds textural contrast and visual interest,
often used to enhance the rustic or traditional appeal of turquoise pieces.
Saw Cut Border:
This refers to a decorative edge around a piece of jewelry or gemstone
setting, achieved using a jeweler’s saw to cut intricate, serrated patterns.
The saw-cut border adds a handcrafted, detailed finish to turquoise jewelry,
showcasing the artisan’s skill.
Split Shank:
A ring band that splits into two separate bands as it approaches the gemstone
setting. This design feature offers the ring a more open, airy feel and
provides additional stability for the setting. A split shank can enhance the
stone’s prominence in turquoise jewelry while adding elegance.
Triple
Shank:
Similar to the split shank, it refers to a band that divides into three
separate bands. This structure creates an intriguing visual effect and offers
a more substantial, balanced support for larger turquoise stones or more
elaborate settings.
The Mohs Hardness Scale:
The Mohs Hardness Scale measures a mineral’s resistance to scratching, with 1
being the softest (talc) and 10 the most complex (diamond). Here’s where each
of your listed gemstones typically ranks on the Mohs scale:

- Amethyst: 7 (as a variety of Quartz)
- Opal: Approximately 5.5-6.5
- Obsidian: Approximately 5 to 5.5
- Rosarita: Not explicitly measured, but being a form of glass slag, it likely falls around 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale.
