NIPSCO ER 3-120-H Cabinet Instrument Transformer

USE : For commercial and industrial installations, purchased and installed by customers. To enclose 600-volt insulation class instrument transformers on indoor or outdoor meter installations. For installing two or three each of voltage and current transformers with provisions to bypass, remove, or replace while energized.

SPECIFICATIONS

GENERAL

  1. Cabinets shall meet all requirements of the above-referenced specifications, where applicable unless otherwise noted below.
  2. All current carrying parts shall be designed based on 1,000 amperes per square inch capacity for copper and 700 amperes per square inch for aluminum.
  3. All dimensions shown are minimum.
  4. Spacing between opposite polarity live parts and between live parts and ground, when mounted on the same surface, shall be a minimum of two inches and one inch, respectively.
  5. Cabinets shall be marked by the manufacturer with voltage, current rating, number of phases for which they are designed, and manufacturer’s name or trademark so as to be visible after installation, without disturbing interior parts or wiring.
  6. For use on 3-phase 3-wire 480-volt delta or 3-phase 4-wire 480Y/277-volt service; 400 amperes maximum.

  1. Material: Minimum 0.10″ aluminum or 14-gauge steel with enamel finish
  2. The front door or cover shall be hinged on the right (looking from the front of the cabinet) and equipped with a sealing device that ensures one padlock seal will effectively prevent the door or cover from opening.
  3. The line and load lug provided will accept one 600 KCM-#4 or two 350 KCM-1/0 copper or aluminum conductors. One lug is provided per phase and neutral as shown in Section 2-1, line and load.
  4. CT and lug landing pads and neutral are rated at 400 amps.
  5. Current transformers are provided by NIPSCO.

Connections:

  1. Line connections shall be made on the top connection plate.
  2. Load connections shall be made on the bottom connection plate.

Current Transformer (CT) Primary Connection Plate:

  1. Material: 1/4″ × 3″ × 4″ copper or aluminum
  2. Drilled and tapped for current transformer, cable lug, and by-pass jumper bolts.
  3. The drawing shows six plates for mounting three 600 bolt class current transformers. When only two current transformers are required, omit neutral and provide a center phase link.

Neutral Connection Plate:

  1. Material: Copper or aluminum
  2. Drilled and tapped for cable lug bolts, #10-24 potential tap screws, and mounting bolts.

Bolts:
For CT’s:

  1. Material: Steel, zinc-plated, 1/2″ – 13 thread × 2-1/2″ long with flat washer and hex head nut
  2. Eight are required for two CTs / 12 are required for three CTs

For Cable Lugs:

  1. Material: Steel, zinc-plated, 1/2″ – 13 thread × 2-1/2″ long with flat washer and hex head nut
  2. Six are required for two CTs / eight are required for three CTs

For Insulator Bus

  1. Material: Steel, zinc-plated, 1/4″ – 20 × 1-1/2″ with washer and hex head nut
  2. Eight Required

For Potential Tap:

  1. Material: Steel, zinc-plated, #10 – 24 × 1/2″ with washer

Lugs:

  1. One-hole cable terminal lug furnished for 500 KCM or larger.
  2. Material: Copper
  3. Six are required for two CT’s / eight are required for three CT’s

Knockouts / Hubs:

  1. Size and location by the customer when required.

Voltage Transformer Bracket:

  1. Material: Steel or aluminum

Voltage Transformer Gutter:

  1. The gutter shall be of the same material and thickness as the main cabinet.
  2. The gutter cover shall be adequately secured by screws and shall be sealable.
  3. Conduit connections shall not be made on gutter assembly.

OUTDOOR CABINET

  1. The door or front cover shall be rain-tight; the top shall be protected with rain shield.
  2. NIPSCO requires vendor-specific vent kits to be purchased and installed per vendor specifications on cabinets intended for outdoor use.
  3. All conduits shall enter the cabinet through the sides, bottom, or rain-tight top hub.
  4. All hardware shall be rust-resistant.
