IKEA VINDRIKTNING Indoor Air Quality Monitor Instruction Manual
Whether you have furry pets or only keep dust under the sofa, it’s a good idea to take a moment to consider the quality of your indoor air.
Improve the air quality
Have you ever wondered how much air you’ll be exposed to during your lifetime?
If your answer is no you’re in good company (while the exact answer is about
250 million litres). Most of us don’t pay much attention to the air we
breathe, especially not indoors. We tend to think of the home as a safe haven
and air pollution as something that exists mainly outdoors – while, in fact,
small everyday things like burning your toast can affect the air you breathe
at home in a negative way.
How is the air in your home?
Although every home has its individual mix of indoor air pollutants, depending on everything from lifestyle and climate to architecture, there are a few common sources. Dust is one, and so is mould from poor ventilation. Other well-known offenders are chemicals (so-called VOCs) emitted from cleaning products, detergents, fragrant cosmetics, paints and upholstered furniture, just to mention a handful. Additional causes of bad indoor air are particles and gases from unvented stoves, from toasters, open fires, tobacco smoke, candles and from polluted outdoor air seeping in.
Small changes can make a big difference
Fortunately, there are lots of easy, affordable things you can do to make a
change. A good place to start is to consider these five aspects:
-
Household goods and products. How much do you know about the chemicals and pollutants in your products? Buy low- or non-emitting alternatives.
-
Cooking. Healthy living is not just about what food you eat, it’s also about how you cook your food. Try to always use an exhaust hood and ventilate the room during and after cooking.
-
Change your routines. Small changes, like not smoking indoors or airing the home at night when outdoor pollution generally is lower, can go a long way.
-
Clean air tools/air purifiers. There are many affordable solutions to help you monitor and improve the air quality in your home.
-
Cleaning. To have clean air, you need a clean home. So try keeping it free from dust and mould.
Take a moment and go through your home while focusing on the air. Making a positive change, whether it’s switching to non-emitting household products or installing air purifiers, doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.
Furnish with cleaner air
With our range of air quality products, it’s a breeze to make cleaner air part
of the interior. With air purifiers targeting odours, dust, smoke, pollen,
chemicals and other pollutants, they help to improve the indoor air quality.
Not only that – the clean and innovative design makes them easy to place just
about anywhere in the home.
Check the air quality in your home
Activities in the home like cooking, using an open fireplace and different sprays can release harmful PM2.5 particles. Harmful particles can also seep in from polluted outdoor air. If you want to know more about the air you breathe at home, check the air quality with our air quality sensors. VINDRIKTNING is an easy to use air quality sensor that detects harmful particles (PM2.5) while VINDSTYRKAchecks the air quality by monitoring particles (PM2.5), temperature, relative humidity and total Volatile Organic Compounds (tVOC). By keeping an eye on things as harmful particles, temperature, humidity and volatile organic compounds you can affect the air quality at home and also help prevent for example mold and mildew growth.

Where is the best place to put the air purifier?
The air purifier is easy to place in your home, just ensure that the flow of
air isn’t blocked by other objects and that no one directly faces the air
outlet to avoid uncomfortable drafts.
STARKVIND should be placed on the floor and both models integrates well
with your home decor. The table version takes up less space since it also also
functions as a side table, and the floor model is easy to move between
different rooms thanks to an integrated handle in the back.
FÖRNUFTIG can be wall-mounted vertically or horizontally to save space,
or used with the included stand on a table or the floor. It also has a
removable handle so you can easily carry it from room to room.
UPPÅTVIND is our smallest air purifier, and thanks to its flexibility it
can be placed standing up, on its side or laying down – depending on your
preference and space
Proud winner of the Red Dot Design Award 2024
STARKVIND table with air purifier has won one of the world’s biggest awards
for product design – the Red Dot Design Award 2024. The jury awarded STARKVIND
for a particularly well-thought-out design solution.
The air purifiers are optimised for different room sizes and air is filtered
through the air purifier 5 times per hour when they are placed in rooms of
these sizes. The air purifiers also work well in rooms that are bigger than
the stated recommendation, the cleaning time will just take a little longer.
You can also use several air purifiers in the same room to cover a larger
area.
Which air purifier should I get?
Deciding on which air purifier suits you doesn’t have to be complicated. Below are some questions you can ask yourself, and depending on your needs we have different air purifiers to help you enjoy cleaner air in your home.
- What’s the size of the room where you want to improve the air quality?
- Would you like to move the air purifier between different rooms?
- Would you like to control it with the IKEA Home smart app?
- Do you want to be able to schedule when the air should be cleaned?
Keep costs low
All our air purifiers are developed to be effective while still keeping everyday running costs as low as possible with affordable replacement filters and efficient energy consumption.

What about the filters?
Our air purifiers contain a pre-filter that captures large particles like dust
and hair and can be cleaned with a vacuum. Inside there is a replaceable
filter for particle removal. For STARKVIND and FÖRNUFTIG you can also buy a
gas filter that is sold separately. The filter for particle removal and the
filter for gas cleaning can’t be cleaned, they can only replaced.
Filter for particle removal
The particle filter is optimised to filter away more than 99.5 percent of
smaller airborne particles such as dust, pollen and harmful PM2.5* particles
that can come from activities in the home like cooking, using an open
fireplace and different sprays. Particles can also seep in from polluted
outdoor air.
Filter for gas cleaning
For STARKVIND and FÖRNUFTIG air purifiers, in addition to the particle filter,
you can also add a replaceable filter for gas cleaning. It’s an activated
carbon filter that targets gaseous pollutants like formaldehyde from cleaning
products and fabrics. It also reduces unpleasant odours such as from cooking
and smoke.
When is it time to replace the filters?
Every home is different, and our recommendation is to check the filter for
particle removal regularly. The gas filter doesn’t change appearance, but it’s
recommended to replace both filters at the same time – and at least every six
months.
All our air purifiers have a LED light which illuminates when you need to
check the filters and possibly replace them. STARKVIND air purifiers can be
connected to the IKEA Home smart app (DIRIGERA hub required) where you can
choose to get filter check notifications to remind you
Better air in a smart home
With a smart home from IKEA, you can choose from more ways of controlling your
home and from a wide range of smart products to use in it – for a more
convenient and enjoyable everyday life at home for everyone in your home.
Furnish your home with smart lighting, one or several air purifiers, speakers
and blinds and control them individually, by room, all at once or with timers.
By adding air purifiers to your smart home, you get even more functions and
digital features in the IKEA Home smart app. Maybe you want to clean the air a
bit more every day before you go to bed, while your blinds automatically roll
down and the bedroom lights dim. Customise a Scene and choose when it runs –
and your smart home will take care of the rest.
To get started with your smart home, you need DIRIGERA hub which will enable
you to manage your smart products in the IKEA Home smart app. If you want to
use a voice assistant, you can connect to Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, or Google
Home through integrations in the IKEA Home smart app.
VINDSTYRKA
By connecting VINDSTYRKA to DIRIGERA hub, you can see the air quality in the
IKEA Home smart app. It makes it possible for you to monitor the indoor air
quality even when you’re away from home.
STARKVIND
By connecting STARKVIND air purifiers to your smart home from IKEA, you’ll
enjoy full control without having to leave the sofa. Choose fan speed for the
air purifier at any time or schedule when you want it to be turned on or off.
FÖRNUFTIG and UPPÅTVIND
FÖRNUFTIG and UPPÅTVIND air purifiers might not be one of our smart home
products, but it can still be connected to your smart home setup, just like
your coffee machine or perhaps the shirt steamer. With TRÅDFRI wireless
control outlet plugged into the wall, any product can be controlled via a
remote control or via the IKEA Home smart app. Turn it on or off, or schedule
when it should run at the fan speed last used.
Towards cleaner air everywhere
An air purifier will improve the air quality in the home, but it can’t do everything on its own – it’s one piece of a large puzzle. That’s why IKEA works long term for positive climate change, focusing on the root causes and always looking for new ways to contribute to better air everywhere.
